^ that girl is amazing, very inspirational <3made me tear up inside actually.we need [a lot] more people like her in the world.

^^ I don't know if the thread is racist or not. It reminds me of a news story a couple years ago where an anchor called a black kid obnoxious for getting into a bunch of ivy league schools, and it was a local scandal.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/fox-5-dc-anchors-black-student-20-colleges_n_5acbdf40e4b07a3485e78869Either way, I think that we should just be proud of the kid for overcoming the odda, and hopefully taking steps to overcome a society that will try to hold him down his entire life

Thank you for your always thoughtful reply. I'm super-proud of anyone for academic accomplishment and especially for doing so in the context of disadvantaged circumstances. What I question a little more is whether this is just a competition to get the most acceptance letters, and the practicality of this given that only one can actually be attended. So is this is a good use of application fees and limited time resources? Clearly these students will do fine anywhere. It strikes me more as disingenuous news coverage.
6/13/2022 9:44:51 AM
Maybe this was the kid's thought process:OK, my number 1 choice is Princeton for Robotics. If I don't get into Princeton, my next choice is Brown for Business, or Stanford for Engineering. Of course, if Harvard is going to accept me and offer me a scholarship, I'm going to choose them for Computer Science. Etc....In that way, it makes perfect sense to apply to multiple schools. Then BOOM, the kid ends up getting into all of them. Then he is in this situation.Yeah, the media is booty in general. Maybe they're just proud of the kid's accomplishments too.

I could buy that. Not the first linked story, though. She applied to 51 schools.

Yeah, these stories always annoy me, too. A lot of people could have gotten accepted to tons of colleges, but like The Coz, I only applied to one.
4/28/2023 3:38:37 PM
I applied to 3, and got in 3, including UNC. I did it so when high school friends/aquantinces would say "You only going to NCSU because you couldn't get into UNC..." I could say "Nah, I turned down UNC".

Among people college applications is a whole 'culture' of sorts now. Some pay tons of money for private college counselors and stuff (although I just saw this online, so I dont know how true it is)I don't really like it, feels like the process isn't very genuine. Like of course you're supposed to care for future and all, but a lot of seems very calculative as in I need x, y, and z to have that exact resume.I think it's a natural outcome of having college be shown as the automatic and only next step after k-12. Hell, I think I would've been better off doing some work or something for a year or two before coming here. But in the moment and rush I didn't really consider that[Edited on April 28, 2023 at 4:24 PM. Reason : -]

Guy who previously was accepted to 170 schools is now up to 185, and he has decided on Cornell.K.

As a society we’ve lost track of what college should be. Basically just vocational school now.

Asian-American student with 1590 SAT score rejected by 6 elite colleges, blames affirmative actionhttps://www.foxnews.com/media/asian-american-student-1590-sat-score-rejected-by-6-elite-colleges-blames-affirmative-actionHe is one of the plaintiffs taking Harvard and UNC to the SCOTUS... decision coming before July 4, and seems like Affirmative Action is likely to be dismantled.
6/10/2023 2:02:51 PM
They told him that?
6/10/2023 2:50:09 PM
Click the link It's an organization called Students for Fair Admissions or something like that. He sent his scores and other details to them, and they have a model that predicts admission chances.
6/10/2023 3:13:42 PM
UC doesn't even have affirmative action
6/10/2023 3:22:46 PM
^^Ah, I thought that was saying the school told him that, which I would have found surprising.
6/10/2023 3:30:25 PM
I thought 1590 wasn't as high of a score now
6/11/2023 1:13:39 PM
It wasn't when the score max was 2400, but now it is again.
6/11/2023 1:35:02 PM
^^ mate if 1590 isn't high, then the only score that's high is 1600, the perfect score.^^^ my bad, i thought i also copy-pasted the line before that paragraph in the article, but i missed it.
6/11/2023 4:25:11 PM
Yes, but there was a time after our age cohort would have taken the test where they added a writing portion and moved the max score up to 2400, and the later moved it back to 1600, so if one knew about the first change but not the second they could be forgiven seeing as how the SAT is well in the past for us.
6/12/2023 2:24:47 AM
At a certain point, the SAT doesn't matter. There really is no real difference between a 1510 and a 1590 when it comes down to what a liberal arts school is looking for. Or even otherwise to be honest.I suppose it is effective for showing a general competence, and then a great command on the basics, but not much more.If there way any motivation to take the one slightly higher, would probably be in improving the school's average SAT to improve their rankings.Regardless, I don't know why you'd wanna publicly do such a case. Just makes you seem like a lame douche and will stick with you for life, right? And even if your name wasn't in it, if you're gonna do this instead of pursuing whatever your actual passion or goal is, maybe that's why you weren't accepted.[Edited on June 13, 2023 at 10:36 AM.
