I saw a kid sitting in the C building lobby with a cop and another adult. The kid was writing something on paper

A kid passed away. I now assume that in all likeliness, the kid writing the stuff with the cop was his roommate and probably giving a witness report of some kind.

I remember hearing about one or two different people jumping off of Sullivan in 1997 or 1998 shortly before I lived there. I would guess it's people not being able to cope with the stress of school, getting good grades, etc.

there were like 2-3 jumps, a very visible stain near UT

2 were "suspected" to be "natural causes" in tehir dorm room i believe, but someone I know from there said drugs for one of them

the others were overdoses

one of the jumpers was on drugs I think but cant be 100%

Social contagion

Normally student suicides are basically buried but students this year demanded that they be made aware of every student death. Was on campus recently and every digital signage was showing messages for a suicide hotline and every cork board had signs up.

It’s not engineering it’s society. People put too much expectations on themselves. They can’t envision a path to a happy life if they don’t achieve some arbitrary goal. People should realize there’s many paths through life, lots of ways to make money, lots of ways to be happy, and you should expect some unexpected things— go with the flow.

It’s because college has become politicized and vocational. People choose stem because it’s what old people and politicians say is practical and will make money. But If they aren’t passionate about it or suited for it, when they stumble they see their path the adults laid out for them in life evaporate. History majors don’t really have the same problem, it’s just people that like history— they’re in college to learn something cool and interesting to them, not just get a high paying job.

Basically people shouldn’t go to a 4yr college if they want a high paying engineering job, they should go to some other certification or training. Reserve 4yr college for people who want to go into esoteric research roles. Making engineer “easier” or whatever isn’t going to help.

My hypothesis is that with the changing culture and internet and all, people are less adult like in the good ways, and more adult like in the bad ways.

Less growing up, but still more exposed to 'existentialism' due to the 'antisocial' media as The Coz put it earlier.

I think there is a lot of a mentality that shows college as simply being an extension of the K-12, and that is something I think isn't good.
Of course, a degree has become so much more necessary for jobs which fuels that, making it more complicated.
