"The Coz, I saw that your major is textile engineering. what kind of stuff do you do in that field? I hear of textiles a lot (bangladesh economy case study lol) but know nothing about it!"

I engineer the hell out of them!

Right now I'm working on highly flame-resistant base layers for use in the oxygen-rich environments on the manned Artemis missions to the moon. NCSU's own Christina Koch gonna be wearing my fabric on Artemis 2. Maybe.

Otherwise I have worked in industrial reinforcements like the fabric portion of pretty much all duct tapes of any brand in North America, Jacquard woven side-impact airbags for vehicles, and fabrics for structural firefighting turnout gear. It has stayed pretty consistently interesting to me. We still manufacture domestically. No interaction with Bangladesh.

I really like that -- connecting with such a variety of fields through your area of expertise.

Yo are you working with JSC? They are the primary NASA center for space suit design. With me at MSFC, combined with Christina Koch that makes at least three NCSU alumni contributing to Artemis! There are a few others here at MSFC, but they aren't on TWW so they don't count.

I think the NASA contacts for the project are based at JSC, yes. Although I don't claim to fully understand the rather opaque organizational structure. Jacobs Engineering is the contractor somehow.

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Fast reply, you should work in customer service.

I remember that time you won the EMCE challenge in a millisecond. Or did you script that somehow? Either way.

^nice one, RD

No, that was a legit win. No scripting. It was just a strategy. And it was in a second, not a millisecond. 1000x slower!

^^^was there any kind of remote possibility you could have miscalculated and posted a 2nd before the near year?

^^Virtually all high-volume commodity goods are gone and are not coming back because textiles is labor intensive and always follows the lowest labors costs (and most lax environmental regulations) around the world. However, what is left is often highly technical in nature, and I enjoy that. I get to interact a lot with technical experts from all over the world. Textiles is the world's second oldest industry! They been spinning and weaving for thousands of years. You can thank textiles for the Internets as well:

Of course, but it wouldn't have really been a miscalculation as much as misplaced faith in the accuracy of TWW's server time. Luckily for me, it was pretty much dead on. I had my post pre-entered and waited until my phone clock had rolled over to 12:00 AM before clicking the "Post Reply!" button. I assumed the phone was synced to network time which was further synced to atomic clock time. If I had really thought ahead, I could have done covert test posts even in other threads at any rollover to a new minute in order to gauge the server time discontinuity, if any.

AGRICULTURE BABY NO#1, TAKE THE L COZ

okay now that that's outta the way

TheCause of my newfound interest in textiles?

I'm interested... what areas of innovation are there in the textiles industry? Like if you could break it down into a few different types/areas, what would they be?

Agriculture was not #1, by the way.

I don't know if I can accurately classify high-level areas of innovation. Composites and high-performance fibers, I guess. Maybe 3D woven and knit structures. There are a lot of ideas that make for intriguing stories for non-industry people, but a lot of it is vaporware and has effectively become a cliche or a trope. I have been hearing about some "next big thing" stuff for more than 20 years, and it either doesn't scale or is just too expensive and impractical. Specific topics that come to mind and fit that bill are synthetic spider silk that is stronger than steel and circuits integrated into garments for real-time monitoring of vitals in sports or on the battlefield or whatever. This stuff is technically possible, but never hits the big time or is anywhere close to cost-effective. It's perpetually just over the horizon. . .

I read your post wrong. But if you mean industry itself, weren't textiles the first industry? That's what I remember from middle school history.

I remember watching a Wild Kratts episode on spider silk when I was a kid!
