I watched an episode of Cook's Country on PBS this past Sunday where this topic was discussed. (The episode was from 11/26/2022; I just happened to watch it this past Sunday.)
The person discussing it said that eggs should be okay for a couple of months after the expiration date, as long as they're kept in a cold part of the fridge, e.g., not in the door.
They said that they've used eggs up to four months after expiration; however, eggs that old don't work well in recipes like souffles that require the eggs to be whipped.

The US is one of the only countries in the world that refrigerates eggs. Eggs have an enzyme coating that prevents bacteria from permeating the egg. So if the eggs are not washed, they can last for awhile. 3/9/2023 4:24:38 PM |

That's mostly BS.
So many items from the grocery store last way past their so-called expiration dates, many of them months, some even years past.
No one I hate more than people who throw away foods as soon as they hit the expiration date without bothering to check if they are good or not. Brainless, food-wasting, rich snobs.3/10/2023 4:29:23 AM |

if your milk is 'natural' enough, you can make cream from it and keep that stored for another week or so in refrigeration. 3/10/2023 11:25:59 PM |

emnsk All American 2916 Posts user info edit post |
Nah, that's why I said "natural". It's gotta be raw or not of the normal processed kind cause they remove the stuff from what you get in stores. 3/11/2023 1:00:30 PM |
justinh524 Sprots Talk Mod 28376 Posts user info edit post |
It's amazing how you allegedly are in college and know nothing about a basic food product such as milk. Concerning, really.
For one, you don't get cream from old milk. For two, milk in the store is "natural". It has had two things done to it (well three because they add vitamin d) 1) pasteurization: this kills any bacteria so it lasts longer than a few days and you won't get sick and 2) homogenization: this is why you can't separate cream from milk you buy at the store. All that involves is pushing milk through tiny holes which breaks up fat globules into smaller particles which do not separate out as easy. That's it.
I mean they also standardize the fat content by separating some out (which goes to make things like cream/ice cream/all the delicious stuff) but milk isn't some weird processed food.] 3/11/2023 2:01:58 PM |

emnsk All American 2916 Posts user info edit post |
^^^I didn't say that it is from old milk, I said that you can do that to extend the life if you refrigerate it afterwards. It can then also be used in other foods or to make other dairy products.
And what you wrote literally agrees with what I said. Fat content is removed and it is processed so that you can't get cream from the milk you get at the store. That's why I said it has to be raw if you wanna extract cream.
And your comment about the natural thing is just semantics, I just meant that in the context of it being unprocessed. When did I ever say store bought milk is weird? I drink it everyday
Lmao what was the point of that post other than to try to flex 8th grade science on me by being a bit more descriptive?

You can buy non-homogenized milk. Homogenization is mainly a customer convenience thing, so you don't have to shake your milk every time before use. 3/11/2023 4:34:38 PM |

Describing one thing as "natural" doesn't automatically ascribe unnatural properties to something else. This is a dumb argument. 3/11/2023 6:26:10 PM |
