I had to go to VBS several times as a kid. moron nailed it: free babysitting for poor families. The ones I went to were held at church, and it was weird just being there during the week when nothing else was going on.

I remember waiting to get picked up one evening and just stewing about having to be there. "There's no such thing as God. Why do I have to do this?" Colossal waste of time. Could've been playing Nintendo.

I'm not competing in the fucking Poor Kid Olympics here. Plenty of poor kids had Nintendo. You get that one big gift for one good Christmas. You own a handful of games collected over subsequent Christmases and birthdays. Otherwise, the occasional rental and a hell of a lot of swapping with your classmates.

I always got the shit 9.99 games from KB Toys. It was like Mario, Zelda, and 2 or 3 crappy games with no replay value. When I got SNES, all I had was Street Fighter 2 Turbo for like 2 years.

Scour Facebook and local church websites for their VBS schedules. Plan out 8 or so consecutive weeks of VBS for your kid. Drop your kid off each night and essentially have 8 weeks of child-free evenings. Profit. Is a church going to really reject your strange rugrat that they've never seen before? Doubtful.

We went to vbs too and it was usually during the day and we walked there— the church people loved the randos, made them really feel like they were spreading the word. Especially since we’re brown too
