No excuse for this performance. I generally say bowl games don’t matter that much. But in this game, there’s no real reason to not be up for this game. We can say ECU isn’t a rival, but you know they will be up for this game and you need to match that. You have a young QB and young offensive skill players that should get reps and have a chance to showcase. And it’s not like we “settled” for this bowl. We had to win game 12 to be bowl eligible, so you’d think the motivation would be there.

Saw a stat today that said a win would have gotten us a 0.500 record all time in bowl games.
On the one hand, exhibition bowl games like the military bowl don't mean much compared to a CFP bowl game. On the other hand, our bowl record was probably about 3 games above 0.500 before DD showed up.

DD said if we won all of our 1 possession games it would have been a 10 win season. But you can not expect to win every 1 score game. They are 1 score games presumably because you are playing evenly with your opponent, essentially coin flips. You don’t go 7/7 on coin flips every time. It’s not sustainable. You should probably expect to be close to .500 in one score games over time larger sample sizes. We were 3-4 in 1 score games. That’s not great but i don’t think you can really claim that it was just bad luck either. Maybe if you’re 1-6 in one score games you can chalk some of it up to bad luck. But I don’t think that was the case this year.

You have to put yourself in a position to not be in one score games every week. If you have a small lead in the 4th Q, maybe try to score and extend your lead. Don’t turtle up offensively and ask your weak defense to get multiple stops in the 4th Q.

We weren’t a very good team this year. So on one hand, maybe we were lucky to have been in so many one score games. But on the other hand, we were leading late vs Wake, ECU, and GT and choked all those games away in part due to poor game management.

Not only was it 7 one score games. But I think every game except Tenn, Clemson, Stanford (including Western Carolina and La Tech) were one score games at some point in the 4th Q. That’s not really a sustainable way to play football. You have to show some sense of urgency, put yourself foot on the gas earlier and build a lead rather than holding on for dear life every 4th Q. Our D was not good enough to be asked to go win the game 10 times this year in the 4th Q.

Preseason hype was clearly undeserved. McCall was not good and probably never actually healthy. Defense had maybe 1 playmaker on that side of the ball. Offensive scheme sucked and rotation of players sucked.

This wasn’t a case of us being talented and not living up to the hype. We just weren’t good. Talented at a few positions but there’s just not many NFL players on this team. Especially looking back to recent teams that were loaded with talent.
