Anyone using this? I kinda wonder why people tolerate legacy social media when after 10 years the open source has caught up in terms of system quality 11/16/2024 11:11:16 AM |

i signed up last year but haven't really used it. same thing for threads. and i'm pretty sure i have a mastodon account somewhere. but twitter remains my social media ecosystem of choice, although I grow weary of it as well. I'll probably retire from twitter at some point, but I have a particular vision for what should be next in social media, and until I'm finished building it (or somebody else gets there first) I'll keep tweeting.

I was never current on any social media but I think I ignored Twitter or didn't understand it until it was saturated and ad driven. 11/16/2024 12:38:41 PM |

I moved from Twitter to Bluesky a while back. Everyone worth a damn that I followed has stopped using Twitter anyway, most of them a long time back. I don't know how you still stand it over there unless you're a racist shitheel, a grifter, painfully stupid, or just genuinely enjoy constantly eating shit.

I feel like twitter has been somewhat unfairly maligned when it comes to its particular dysfunctions. pretty much any social media platform of sufficient scale is going to have to deal with this kind of stuff (I mean, we all know the history of our favorite web relic). twitter is not unique in this regard at all. name a single social media platform where trolls don't sprout up and ruin things for everybody else. even bluesky is already dealing with the worst of what humanity has to offer. because of its relatively unique standing in the social media landscape over years, twitter has been a bigger target/attractor of terribleness to poison the public discourse, but for individual users, it's pretty straightforward to avoid. my feed (both the for you and the followings tab) provides me with a lot of value, imo. I try not to follow racist shitheels, grifters, stupids or shit-eaters in the first place, and I've unfollowed/muted a lot of people over the last few years especially and my feed is so much more pleasant as a result. sure, public figures, brands and other prominent accounts usually attract a lot of nonsense in the replies, but if you have a sufficiently developed immune response to reading bullshit on the internet (which you should at this point) you don't get baited by it, just point and laugh, and move on.

honestly that's probably my least favorite thing about twitter these days. I get very little engagement most of the time (probably a personal deficiency more than anything i'm sure). It's easier to actually get into a conversation with people in YT comments than on twitter.
From a philosophical point of view, I do appreciate the effort to build bluesky on an open protocol. Years back I did some POCs with ActivityPub and found it exhausting and irritating so I'm a little hesitant to waste time on another overengineered federated architecture, but we'll see.
I considered using a script to migrate all my tweets to bluesky, but like I said, if twitter is on the way out, I'd rather just make the leap to talking with strangers on the internet over video chat rather than continuing to type messages one byte at a time like a fucking caveman (as I do precisely that in this very thread).

Approximately 3% of the population would meet the diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder. When you reach a user base of 30,000 or more, online communities tend to drift toward the dynamics of platforms like 4chan.
At a certain point, moderation becomes necessary. Moderators come with their own issues. First, they become autists, so focused on rules that they struggle to understand satire or sarcasm. This leads to humor, in-group jokes, and harmless content being flagged. The other type weaponizes moderation to exert control and power over others. The worst tendencies of your fifth grade hall monitor policing others for wrong think.
On one extreme, there's the chaos of 4chan, and on the other, the over-moderation of Twitter in 2021. Personally, I prefer to avoid social media platforms that fall into either extreme. 4chan should not feel refreshing after a visit to Twitter. And Twitter shouldn't be so gross the normies don't leave. 11/16/2024 8:22:14 PM |

I've only really used Twitter regularly in the last year or so. It seems fragmented to me.
Like, the regular communities, be it about tech or sports or whatever, seem normal. But once you get into politics, it gets really weird really quick. Like the top replies to the President will often be wacko crap you couldn't say in public, and half of which I don't even get the references to. Also, Twitter, besides the bots, has seemed really fake lately. I hate all these "reel posting accounts" that flood your recommended despite how many times you say no, and which flood up and spam in replies.
But if you curate some cool people to follow, Twitter is really awesome. The stuff you can find out about and learn about on the spot makes it awesome. Instagram is just less extreme on all fronts, since it is more casual and more of a content creation app, so there isn't much of a comparison.
Let me put this way, Twitter used best is much better than Instagram used best for interacting with the internet at-large. Instagram will just end up being slop, whereas Twitter can have some productive use to it.
I haven't used Threads at all, nor much else.

Dude. YT Comments are the best. They're the most genuine, funny, and helpful. So many cool anecdotes, so much helpful information. I love it11/18/2024 7:45:59 AM |
