Pictures coming out make it look like the apocalypse. I saw a picture of one of those Palisades neighborhoods and the associated property values. Two blocks alone is worth almost 1 billion dollars. Crazy.

Going to take the Luigi approach to this and say it couldn't have happened to a nicer set of people

Who is this "set" of people you refer to? And are you saying none of them are "nice"?

So did James Woods.

Saw a video of someone still in their house while their neighbor’s house was engulfed in flames. Not sure why that person didn’t get the heck out of there sooner.

It’s nuts to think that in 2024, something like the 1902 San Fran fire can still happen.

Please don't call it, "San Fran."

Also, the great SF earthquake was in 1906, so not sure what you mean by 1902.

^^^

Mechanized fire equipment, airplanes and chemical retardants, more developed plumbing and water systems? Are you being dense or what?

I lived blocks away from the latest evac. Did not have any assumptions it could jump the mountain there and assumed the huge fucking residential barrier with multi million dollar homes, multiple fire stations, and fire hydrants would have stopped it.

But a big chunk of those property values is in the land (which is still there) rather than the structures. One might argue that the land values are gonna go down, but I disagree. Most of these people can temporarily sell their lots off as "ocean view" since all of the homes/trees previously blocking their view are burnt to the ground.

Froskiller, you’re not one for dumb comments, so this one surprises me:

And yes, sorry, I meant the earthquake induced fire of 1906. There have been tons of advancements made in the last 118 years regarding cities’ responses to large fires. You don’t have people daisy-chained swapping buckets of water (although maybe that might’ve been helpful here). You did not have planes that could dump liquid on fires, for one, back in 1906. There also weren’t any flame-retardant materials for firefighters, and O2 tanks back then, so today’s firefighters can get closer to the flames to put them out, jesus

does the fire not know about all the hard work we've done since nineteen-dickety-six, it's almost like it doesn't care about all our progress

Basically no difference between using a horse and carriage with water buckets and turbine aircraft with GPS and huge fire trucks with 50 gallon per second flow rates.
