any idea how I would go about writing something to do this

I can work around it with software I have, but I wanna try it out myself

pdf-->docx
ppt-->pdf

that kind of stuff

Right click the file, choose "Rename", and then you can just rename it from .pdf to .docx or whatever. If your converted file doesn't open then you'll have to get a new computer unfortunately.

Pretty sure that PPT --> PDF is already built in to Office and Windows at this point.

Can't you just copy and paste text from a PDF to a Word document (assuming it wasn't just scanned to PDF as a graphic)?

Try Adobe Acrobat (not the Reader).

It is good for editing PDFs.
