Yes I mean its not like ISPs, Porn sites, Gaming sites, or any other internet site has a "trial membership" option... I mean if it made any business sense at all it would be done on other sites... but since NO ONE is doing free trials it must be a bad business practice!

Then what about a few day trial per-user. That way everyone wouldn't come at once, but whenever they wanted. Not that I think it's a good idea, but just offering suggestions.

how about randomly displaying the chatter box as an ad. only premium can post to it. non-premium gets to randomly see it. it'll spark more interest and probably create more memberships that way.

^ In that case, it's not that it's not staying a premie benefit, it's that you're concerned about a potential invasion of your privacy. In which case you shouldn't be worried about that at all because it's a freaking Internet message board and anything you post in it can easily be reposted to an area where the non-premies can see it.
