On Thursday, February 1st at 7 p.m. in the McKimmon Center, the Union Activities Board will host an on-campus lecture by one of the century's greatest creative intellects, Dr. Maya Angelou. Her lecture will focus on the importance of ethnic, religious, and economic diversity in all endeavors, and Dr. Angelou will challenge her audience to dedicate more of their lives to improving the state of the human condition.
Tickets for Dr. Angelou's lecture are on sale through February 1, 2001 at N.C. State's Ticket Central located in Talley Student Center, 2nd floor. Previously sold out, another 200 tickets were made available on January 23. Ticket Central may be reached at 919-515-1100. Prices for the event are free for NCSU Students (though students still must get tickets through Ticket Central to reserve spots - NCSU ), $5 for Non-NCSU students, $10 for NCSU faculty and staff, and $15 for all others.
Starting at 6:15pm, buses will run from Talley Student Center to McKimmon Center for those without transportation. After the conclusion of the lecture, they will return attendees to Talley.
A poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer, director, and speaker of four languages, Dr. Angelou's life is itself a model of diversity. In 1993, Dr. Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" for the first inauguration of President William Jefferson Clinton. With such works as her wildly popular autobiographical account, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", Dr. Angelou's career has been instrumental in breaking down many of the social barriers surrounding race and sex in our nation.
