i kind of want the new 40mm pancake lens.

even though it only opens up to f/2.8 and i don't have a t4i for the video autofocusing this lens is designed for.

I'M SUCH A CONSUMER

it looks so cute though

That'd be a solid walkaround lens on a 5D.

They put a 52 mm filter thread on it because 25 mm filter that it really needed are not easy to find

I'd like to see how the new AF system works. I will be surprised if it will be accurate at apertures larger than f/8.

In the other news, I finally ordered my very own 70-200 f/2.8 IS (first version). I hope not to be dissapoint

Found this copperhead yesterday, as pictured. Very pretty for a copperhead.

And a barking treefrog. Sorry, I know that some people find field guide shots extremely boring.

So is it common courtesy to ask permission from people in public to take their photos? As I walked out of my building today, I was instantly met with a girl across the street who raised her camera and took photos of me as I crossed. I didn't say anything and it's not that it really bothered me...I was just curious what POV those of you that take people pics have on the subject. But she didn't say a thing.

I did, however, check to make sure the barn door wasn't open as soon as no one was around.

I don't do people street photography because I'm too big a pussy but I probably wouldn't ask beforehand if i were shooting typical fast-paced street photography, then the moment would be gone. Unless I was doing a strangers portrait project or something. Then I'd ask.

You should've asked for a card or something to see the shot later

Came out with some friends to an live art creation event last week and had my 60D with 17-55 and the 50mm in the bag. Then turned it into a fun little After Effects exercise. Ended up getting enough usable footage to put together a little collage.

It was at National Harbor in Washington DC. Not sure when I am hitting up NC, but it certainly toasty up here and I can't imagine how hot the weather must be in NC right now, so if i'll be hitting up anything soon, it will be Wilmington.

Here is another video I put together about the first in a series of the live performances on various rooftop establishments around DC area. I tried to use some of the "advanced" YouTube functions to introduce some interactivity to this piece.

Is anyone going to try to shoot the fireworks over the Raleigh skyline tomorrow? I'm thinking Boylan St and Dorothea Dix would probably have the best viewpoints??

Any of ya'll clean your own sensor or have a recommendation around the Triangle? I have gotten a couple on my relatively new D7000 and the most I have really ever done is the air bulb. I once took my D200 to Peace Camera in Raleigh, but all they did was blow the thing out with compressed air, which I am VERY hesitant to do on my own. It did work though. It was my work issued camera though so I was not nearly as nervous as I am about this one that I bought.

So any thoughts or suggestions? I have a wedding to shoot on the 28th and I really want to have the D7000 and D200 to use.

Peace has never been a problem for me. I'm sure you can send it to the manufacturer if you wanted a THOROUGH cleaning, but that shouldn't be necessary unless you abuse your gear.

^Do they do a wet cleaning too or just the free cleaning? That is what they did for me before and got all the shit off my sensor, and yea I try to be very careful about keeping the sensor clean and do lens swaps quickly, etc.

I'm trying to pick a photo to submit to gizmodo's food porn shooting challenge. I shot some stuff this morning and narrowed it down to these 4, I have a favorite, but wanted some opinions before making a selection.

The shot with the bottles is homemade vanilla extract and vanilla beans.

Looking to get a DSLR, any suggestions for the best I can get for under $1,000. I was considering a D3200. Then I read the D5100 maybe a bit better in terms of noise. I would like to get a standard 18-55, a telephoto lens and a F 1.8 50 mm block lens. Is it possible to get a camera a built in autofocus motor in this price range so I can use the camera to autofocus my block lens?

After some research, I have narrowed down the T4i with a 18-135 IS STM lens. I will eventually get a 50 mm f 1.4 block lens as well. The f1.4 has a USM motor and I read that the T4i has a focus motor as well. So which motor will the camera use to focus?

^ I'm not much of a gear head so I can't answer the question, but I can pass on the best advice I got with purchasing equipment:

Glass is the most important part of your bag. Buy the highest quality glass you can afford then think about the body behind it.

Kiwi thanks for the keen eye. I removed the stain, I'm glad I didn't submit that with such a noticeable flaw. Need to pick a favorite by the morning to submit.

I had a chance to take a few more photos tonight while the kid was asleep.

and to compare:

^,^^ I'm in PM me with details if you're serious.

^^^Overnighters are a little more than I can chew right now. If it's near the Asheville area that may be doable for me since I can work in a shoot with my brother and his buddies. If enough people are interested, I'm sure he's got a bunch of hippy/artist friends who also do extreme sports that we can tag along with for some high adventure shoots.

For the time being, is anyone interested in something local? Maybe another event like Got To Be NC or a public sporting event, craft show, fair?
If we can get enough takers we could always try to get a model/models for a fashion/portrait/posed action. Everything in my portfolio is photojournalistic and old, I really want to start getting some shots that are commercially marketable; model, posed, food, etc. shots in the mix.

All of these were shot with a Pentax K-x with either a Pentax 18-55mm lens or a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I may post some more. Hopefully you all enjoy them.

Reposting from the storm thread, but I shot these at a party Saturday night on Roanoke Rapids Lake. I have never attempted to do lightning photography before, but was pretty impressed with the results for my first attempt.

I did these at ISO 100, 30 sec. and f/5.6. Anybody else ever shot this before and have a suggestion on better settings than this?

Ronny, is that dude splashing a flammable liquid in there, or is he for some reason just throwing random liquid on the fire? My gut tells me the former, but the lack of badass flamery makes me lean toward the latter.
