Prof 'sickened' by UNC academic scandal
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/11090438/
History Professor Jay Smith: “We had all this news about a rogue tutor,” Smith explained. “There was a rogue assistant coach, a rogue agent, now, a rogue faculty member and a rogue administrative assistant. That's a lot of rogues."

New info coming out, 58% of students in the courses were athletes when you include in the non revenue numbers.
Quote : | "More than half of the students enrolled in the classes in question were athletes, according to Nancy Davis, associate vice chancellor for university relations. 246 of them were football players (36 percent of enrollments); 23 were basketball players (3 percent); and 131 (19 percent) were students who competed in Olympic sports." |

$12K for a single summer class.

University officials say the other eight summer school courses he taught were in a classroom setting and are not in question. They were all introductory courses offered by the African studies department. He was paid $8,400 for being a summer school administrator for three sessions, university records said.
The pay was in addition to his annual salary, which reached $171,000 last year before he stepped down as chairman. That knocked his pay down to $159,000." |

There is one question that UNC needs to answer that will crucify them. All the 'Rogues', 'Outrage', 'No preferential treatment for athletes', etc be damned.
-How, in his first class as a college student and probably before stepping on campus, did Marvin Austin get enrolled in a 400 Swahili class that he did not have the pre-requisites for, and was later found to be one of these no-professor/no-work classes.
Once that answer is revealed, we need to understand the motivation for whomever signed him up for the class. Athletic dept pressure? Cash? Both?
I don't see how they can squirm out of this, but I wouldn't put it past them 5/11/2012 8:46:54 AM |

The feeling that I'm getting that's coming from the top down is that they're already "done" with the investigations and punishments.
People could uncover something alarming like 75% of all the athletes in all the sports programs at UNC could potentially be deemed academically ineligible because they took these enroll and get an automatic A courses and I still feel it would be "handled internally", be an "isolated incident", and still pass the smell test with the BoG and BoT.
Forget about athletics. At this point I'm wondering how some of their colleges over there even get to retain accreditation.

^ They may be done with it but I wonder what the good ole NCAA thinks about all of this. I am just waiting for them to pay another visit to Chapel Hell.
Prediction: UNC will soon be complaining of racism and will probably release figures on the racial makeup of the class. Then they will try to argue the only reason that so many athletes were in the class is because they were black.

Guaranteed A classes exist everywhere. I remember at least when I was at State the "History of North Carolina" class had a reputation of giving out 100% A's.5/14/2012 1:40:35 PM |
Bullet All American 28336 Posts user info edit post |
I never took a class that had guaranteed A's. I did take a geology class that the teacher went over each question and answer on the test during the class before the test, so if you weren't a total dumbass and actually went to the class before testday, it was an easy A. But you had to attend that class, you had to take notes, and you had to memorize the notes. 5/14/2012 1:44:28 PM |

Haha. I've heard the same thing for geology but they went to other schools, it was given the nickname "Rocks for Jocks".

Had an Asian English teacher at State that didn't show up for a single class for 3 weeks. Quite the joke as a professor but I didn't care for English so it's not like I complained.
The point of all this is accreditation isn't getting pulled for such bullshit. Is it a joke? Yeah, it is. But respectable people don't go around starting fires for the hell of it.

in ma 302 we would go into class, get a lecture about matlab and then take a quiz that was identical to a study guide that was online. people would hand it in before he was done passing them all out. the homeworks were to change a few lines in a matlab code that he provided. it was as easy of an A as i can imagine.
but you still had to go to the class at least take the quiz, and the professor was still there every time, and you still had to actually turn in the matlab codes.

if it's the same one i took, it was an easy A because he basically gave you the answers to the tests in the lectures, but you still had to go to class, take notes, study notes, and regurgitate notes on the test.
as said above, easy A != 'free' A5/14/2012 2:00:45 PM |

Yeah, only morons (ie carolina fans) think that "everywhere has easy classes" is a valid argument. Nobody with any sense has an issue with the classes being easy, they just can be fake and fraudulent. It all goes back to fair play and competition. If you know you don't even have to show or that your grade will get modified, you have more time, energy, sanity, than your opponents. 5/14/2012 2:22:31 PM |

yeah, every school has easy classes set up for athletes, most schools don't call themselves a "public ivy"
also most schools don't follow this ridiculous three step program
1. come up with honor code, just like all other schools 2. call it "the carolina way" and act as if it is sacred and unique 3. regularly violate the fuck out of it and obstruct anyone who asks for transparency5/14/2012 7:06:06 PM |
