The sad thing is that none of this would have ever come out if it wasn't for the work of some state message boards. I really have to imagine that the NCAA is not too happy with UNC's handling of their academic prong.6/16/2012 8:27:42 AM |

In unrelated news, UNC-CH has just bought fifteen industrial-strength high-volume paper-shredders and is soliciting bids for hard-drive shredding equipment. In addition, they are putting out RFQs for new hard drives to replace a slew of "stolen" drives.6/16/2012 3:10:40 PM |

Does anyone remember when the Swahili stuff started surfacing UNC edited basketball players profiles to remove majors (many were AFAM majors)? I think it was on TWW where it was noted but I can't seem to find it. 6/17/2012 11:09:25 AM |

I bet the NCAA is more unhappy with the media and anti-UNC fans at this point. The whole UNC situation had red flags everywhere, but the NCAA basically handed down a slap-on-the-wrist for the football penalties. The decision was even delayed until a weekend where it would be pushed to page 5 of newspapers and websites (NCAA BB tournament, yes?).
The NCAA did their damnedest to keep UNC's coveted basketball program off the firing range, but with an academic scandal, that will be impossible. I wonder if they will resist coming to campus and investigating this as well. And to think, there's a good chance this wouldn't have been found if the hammer was sufficiently dropped on UNC for football (still a lot of blood frenzy from groups knowing it was a slap on the wrist with a lot of ignored info).6/18/2012 9:57:24 AM |

I don't see how the media is saying the latest information doesn't warrant NCAA investigations, on the grounds that student athletes weren't given favorable treatment. When student athletes make up the majority of fake classes; advisers were steering student athletes to these classes; and classes were opened one day, filled with student athletes, then immediately closed; then surely something is amiss and deserves external, independent review. 6/18/2012 10:01:29 AM |

Hits keep coming:
Quote : | "An Indianapolis Star report two years ago on basketball team graduation rates is catching attention today in light of the academic fraud case at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The report notes that seven of the players on UNC-Chapel Hill's 2005 championship team who had graduated by the time the story was published all received the same degree -- a bachelor of arts in African and Afro-American Studies.
The Star interviewed Sean May, who was the center for the team, and his comments have a particular resonance today, with the university now acknowledging a major academic fraud case in that department involving classes with little or no instruction. Many of these classes have high enrollments of athletes in the two big money sports -- basketball and football.
According to the Star: 'May said he started as a double major with communications, but dropped it so he could graduate faster after leaving for the NBA.Afro-American and African studies, May said, offered "more independent electives, independent study. I could take a lot of classes during the season. Communications, I had to be there in the actual classroom. We just made sure all the classes I had to take, I could take during the summer."'
May left the school for the NBA following the 2005 championship, but collected his degree four years later. It's unclear what classes he took or who taught them. The academic fraud centers on the former chairman, Julius Nyang'oro, who is being allowed to retire effective July 1.
The Star's report said the high number of African studies graduates on the basketball team raises issues of "clustering," in which athletes are steered to a particular course of instruction because it's easier to accomplish. But John Blanchard, UNC-CH's director of academic support for athletes, told the Star that wasn't the case.
"The question is whether they are getting a good education," he said, "and the answer is a resounding yes."
May is one of more than a dozen prominent athletes listed as Facebook friends with Deborah Crowder, the former administrative assistant for the department who has declined to be interviewed by university officials investigating the academic fraud." |

Ok, so I did some data mining this morning, or tried, because the NCAA website blows for showing the data and wanted to compare NCSU & UNCs APR numbers. I was trying to get the single year data for as long as they have done this, so that we could see the actual APR that year and not just the averages. They began recording the data in 2003-2004 season, but they did not start publishing the data until the 04-05 season. The problem is that they only gave the single year info since 2008-2009 season, giving us 3 years of APR, with the average coming off 4. So I tried to reverse extrapolate the data as best as I could, and here is what I got:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/772237/UNC%20NCSU%20APR%20Comparison.xlsx
The blocks in green are all data that was provided by the NCAA. The other blocks are the data I attempted to get out of the info they gave. As you get back to the first couple of years, where they average from 2 or 3 years, some of the numbers get all fucked up. Anybody can take a look and post what they find. My method did work on some, like UNC Football, which came out about right, but basketball on both teams went to shit.
The point was to compare the single years to get a more accurate number on how they did each year. They buried the shitty single year 2010-2011 APR in their 4 year APR average which obviously includes years they were just giving away grades. By checking out the data you can see that in 2 years the UNC basketball team went down from a perfect 1000 in the 08-09 season to a 909 in 10-11, a whopping drop of 91 points. Baseball also dropped from a perfect 1000 to 912, a drop of 88 points. Football dropped 58 points as well, and even further if you go back using my data, which checks for football, as they pulled a 978 in 07-08.
Anyways tl;dr I know, but check this out and see what I fucked up and if this isn't very telling about the academic situation over there. I don't think this was the first year they had a lot of transfers from the programs, and yet Roy and the boys still managed to pull a perfect 1000 in 08-09. And even baseball, which I don't think has really taken any of the spotlight in this deal has had a big slide too. 6/21/2012 9:32:35 AM |

Unless your father ran a corrupt program and drove it into the ground. There are exceptions to every rule and this is one of them. Tell the kid sorry but there are plenty of other places you can get a better education and walk on to a football team. When you are trying to repair a reputation these kind of things just keep piling on continuing to make you look like a train wreck of an institution.

You can't turn away the kid if you're UNC...but it's not a great idea to go after him either. I know they didn't offer him a scholly, but to be a preferred walk-on, you have to at least be encouraged a little bit.

If he didn't seem to go out of his way to seem like an investigation-obstructing jerk I'd have sympathy for Butch.
He took over Miami when they needed someone to steer them through their penalties. He was able to do so while graduating his players and maintaining their ability to compete so that they were playing at a BCS level. He managed to get a cobbled-together Cleveland Browns to the playoffs in his second year (the team's 4th year after being recreated). They haven't been back since. He inherited a UNC football program that seems to already have had the corruption in place. He just brought in players with a talent level that got people to pay attention.
The guy COULD have been a sympathetic character who struggled to clean up the problems as they came to light. Instead he seemed to willfully become a part of the problem.
Plus he couldn't beat NC State so I'll always wish he'd remained UNC's head coach. 6/26/2012 12:53:48 PM |

hahaha he maintained their ability to compete by getting around all the scholarship penalties, just handing out track scholarships instead. he singlehandedly forced the NCAA to make that against the rules. 6/26/2012 1:13:49 PM |
