I started in the brickyard, went all the way down to St Mary's and back. I must say RPD handled it very well, shut down hillsborough and was more concerned about people's safety than anything else.

I didnt see any vandalism other than everyone stealing cones and barrels and kicking them about. Construction co on hillsborough is gonna have fun tomorrow...

I did hear that anyone that tried to get over the hedge at the chancellors house got arrested and supposely a few got tazed. Any one know anything on this?

Everything was so innocent in the Brickyard.. there was crowdsurfing, jumping, a congo line, and people doing the electric slide to no music. I blame NCSU Police for basically taking it out to Hboro St.

How it turned into a riot:

In an effort to bring music to the brickyard, a guy named Devin drove his truck into the middle of the brickyard, started some music. Cops quickly ran in, shut the music down and told the guy to get out, ticketed him, charged him, and presumably under arrest. Students didn't like this at all.

They surrounded the truck, started throwing stuff, yelling at the cops, and refused to let the truck leave. As it headed out of the brickyard the mob followed in a mass exodus, refusing to budge and let the truck by. Police would push and force people out of the way allowing the truck to inch forward slowly. Eventually it got onto hillsborough street.

The crowd sprinted after it, those riding in the back of the truck jumped (or some fell dramatically) onto the street. The truck turned off onto a side road according to orders by the cops. (If we had managed to hit the ped crosswalk, button the we might could've stopped it and got in front of it again)

People running after it down the street were kicking cones, hitting barrels and throwing cinderblocks into the road. Some were climbing trees, etc. When the back part of the horde caught up, everyone rallied at the belltower. It was here that the cops had time to regroup. For some reason, people started a circle run around the belltower. Many students dissipated during this time, but after a while, students called for a march to the chancellors house.

Upon arriving, roughly 30-45 students ran into his yard. This ended quickly as the cops had enough to block off the main entrances. The remaining est. 250-300 students continued to march down hillsborough, however eventually they began following the "law" and walked on sidewalks, and jokingly only crossed at crosswalks when the stoplights were red.

After passing Peace college, students were met by the "defensive line" of about 16 cops, some with batons, at least one k9 unit, prohibiting the possibility of breaking the barricade. When queried about continuing walking legally along the sidewalk toward downtown, police stated, "you can't keep going because you are an 'assembly.'"

Then the remaining 150 or so students sat down in the middle of the street in somewhat of a protest against the line of cops. Due to the beckoning of many students, one of the cops approached and gave his short spill. (BTW, many cops were being yelled at or made fun of, one such chant was "I-smell-bacon!" claps "I-smell-bacon")

His speech effectively ended the riot, though in this author's opinion was a load of bs straight out of riot control 101. However, it was much more of an effective way to handle the situation than those cam. police who were just pushing people out of the way and arresting the heroes of the night.

All in all, witnessed at least 4 arrests,

1. Devin, for driving truck on brickyard
2. Guy knocking over traffic cone
3. Guy climbing on bell tower
4. Guy attempting to enter hole in bushes to get into chancellor's yard.
Likely, there were many, many others.

This skinny guy kicked one over, a cop ran over to him and he kinda didn't resist. Then students got really pissed, started yelling at the cops, then like 4 cops surrounded this kid and cuffed him pretty tight and hauled him over to one of the cop cars with a bunch of students yelling how he didn't do anything and stuff like that. The kid looked pretty mad about it, obviously.
