I've seen some tough play money tables on party poker.... you guys shouldnt talk bad about them if you've never played them before..... I think that me and my play money buddies would beat you "real money" players any day.

^ You're correct

Because if you told us you were using "play chips" we wouldn't show up so you'd win by forfeit.

That is a good example of why you shouldn't call a preflop raise with KJ suited in a loose tournament.
ie, bring your big guns to the big pots.. especially with another big stack in the hand - that is not a situation where you want to try to outdraw somebody

1) You got yourself committed to call the short stack's all-in preflop, since two other people had called it.
2) You had to think you somebody out there had you dominated with that sort of action.. with something like AK or a pocket pair above tens.. thus you likely needed to make a flush or straight to win the pot.
3) You flopped the nut flush draw, which was about as good as you could hope for. Thus you got yourself committed to going all-in, which jeopardized 3/4ths of your chips, with only about one third a chance of taking the pot

I like this play in cash games sometimes with KJ or even much lower suited connectors, the pot odds you're getting in this situation will make your money back from the two thirds of the times the diamond doesn't come. But here in tournament format, you unneccessarily put most of your stack at risk on just a draw.. which I don't like. The risk-reward is not in your favor. Most of the time you will end up with a short stack, and sometimes you get a huge chip lead - which doesn't even guarantee you making the money with 7 people left.

Sure, it worked out this time - which is why you posted the hand here. But that tournament play is going to cost you in the long run.

HAHAHAHA... funny. what's the odds of hitting your flush if you have four cards on the flop? it's like 36% or something?

KJdiamonds in a tourney... FOLD TO ANY RAISE... hell, most of the time, depending on position, I'd just fold it preflop.

Horrible play, lucky catch.

Alright, I already know I made the incredibly stupid play here, so it's more a reinforcement of an obvious lesson for the few of you that don't already know it and myself.. Unfortunately, I don't have the hand history. (The table broke right after this hand and I didn't get a chance to grab it.)

41 players are left in a limit multitable. 40 places pay. I'm last in chips at my table with 3300, but that's pretty good shape - stakes are 800/1600 and there's at least two people on every other table with a shorter stack than mine. It's hand for hand, so I can fold into the money. I'm in small blind. I'm dealt pocket Ks.

UTG raises. He's done this every time he's been UTG, and people are picking up on it. UTG+1 reraises. Folds to button, who's been playing like he should have been the second one out. (Reraises on Axo, that sort of thing.) He reraises.

Here, I do the stupid thing and call down, more or less pot-committing me, especially when it comes down rags. The others cap it out to the river, Button ends up all in as well.

UTG has aces. So does UTG+1. Button has jacks. I'm 41st and an absolute idiot for playing the hand when even if none of them have aces I'm nearly guarenteed a cash if I fold and risking that pretty heavily against 3 hands if I stay in. In that spot, even if I'd had aces, I should have folded. Momentary lapse of reason.

No, you played it right.. you just ran into aces with kings

You just gave good reasons not to assume any of those players had aces, therefore you had to put yourself as the favorite preflop, therefore you were right to get all of your money in. If you're playing multi's just to make the money, you shouldn't be playing them. Don't let being on the bubble effect your play. In fact I recommend being more aggressive with a big stack when it's bubble time, but even with a short stack you should never be folding kings - those are the kind of hands you need to become a big stack and make the final table

ie. play to win.. the first couple payout levels are shitty anyways

^ moreorless i agree with him, but...

In LIMIT tournies pocket kings aren't nearly as powerful as NL tournies... the fact that it was already capped before it got to you makes it possible to fold the Kings

i wouldnt beat yourself up over it... if the kings hold up and you quadruple up practically you put yourself in position to make a lot of money...

played last friday.

got fucked once... Qc-high flush and ended up getting fucked because someone had an Ac-high fush also... but even NoidRoid said i couldn't have played that hand any other way... still was extremely pissed...

ended up winning that tournament by getting lucky on the turn with my Ac 3c (paired up the ace)... it wasn't a bright play but i was well in the chip lead and could afford to do something to throw off Justin...

Played in a 2pm daily tourney at the Horseshoe. Its been awhile since I played poker and let me tell you I was intimidated as shit.

Prizepool was like 12 grand.

I lasted like 4.5 hours. 7 MIN out of the money , but I couldn't afford the freaking antes! Top 10 paid-I got nada. The top 3 chopped all winning 2 grand about 35 min after I busted.

I lost the majority of my money when I raised preflop with 7s and someone went all in defineately covered me. I knew he had a bigger pair and folded it. Everyone at the table was amazed. He had Freaking Aces...so I never really got back in after that. I however got a lot of completements from some players and was told to keep it up. I wanted to play the 150 buy in one but it didnt work out that way.

I played 1-2 NL & 2-4. I broke pretty even where I played. Lost freaking $100 to 8-2 to my pp kings which sucked. Who calls a 10X raise with 8-2 off suit?!!!!

I however came ahead for the trip. My mom gave me 20 to play progressive slots. I picked the Wheel of Furtune 5 cent slot. I won almost 500

When I was at the Bellagio I recognized several people at the high stakes room off WSOP/WPT.

I AM GOING BACK TO VEGAS SHORTLY!!!!

Haha, this should probably go in the play poker section, but it's a funny story. I have had so much trouble finding a decent game out here that I actually played in a $5 buy-in tourney with like 10 people. So I won the first one, netting me $20 (yeah, I know lol) and they decided to have a second one. Well I played extremely aggressive the first one, and it pissed this one girl off, so she had this new mentality for the second one that she would not fold to me at all if she had a pair, which is exactly what I wanted.

Anyways, it's like the 3rd hand of the second tourney, and I get dealt 10/9 off, so I raise to like 300 (BB was 50). The only person who stayed in was that girl, and she reraised to 400 (yes, I know, we had the discussion about minimum raises and I was quickly informed that you can raise whatever you want cause it's no-limit..... lol) So basically, I had to put her on a monster hand cause she hadn't raised all night. The flop came 10/10/K, giving me trip 10's on the flop. She checks, and I bet 500 (we started with 2500). She thinks about it and calls. At this point I put her on AK or maybe even AA, but definitely not KK. I know sometimes Jake will make a post saying he "knows" that some guy online will not have something, which is definitely bullshit cause #1. it's Jake, and #2. it's very hard to read people over the internet, especially if you're Jake. Let's just say I woulda bet my car that she didn't have KK, cause I knew how she would react. Theturn was a 7, and I bet 1200, putting her and me almost all the way in. She thinks about it and calls. I know I am good. The river is a Q, and she immediately goes all-in for like 140 more. Of course I call, and she flips over QQ. I immediately took a quick glance around me to make sure I wasn't in Party Poker land.

The funny thing about that hand (funnier than calling away your whole stack with QQ when K1010 is on the board) was everyone's reaction. They were all like "Oh yeah, she played that awesome, that's EXACTLY how I woulda played it," not even realizing how horrible of a play she made and how low her percentages were. But hey it's only $5 and I probably won't bother with it again. If the game I was at was for high stakes, I could be a millionaire (assuming I didn't get outdrawn lol). I miss our real games with people who knew what they were doing. I'm sure I will be out soon, the next time their is a big tourney out in Raleigh.... but until then, take care guys.

One of the worst beats story:

Dunno if anybody has heard of world tavern poker tour. free tourneys u can play in around the area, win prizes and accumulate points depending on ur rankings. at the end of all the tourneys, there is a final tourney with top players and u can win a chartered jet trip to Atlantic City. NE WAYS, heres the bad beat.

My friend and i were at the same table and he was SB. he had about 2400 in chips and blinds were 200/400. everyone folded to him and he raised to 1200. BB reraises all in(and has my friend covered). my friend calls and flips over pocket 10's. Other guy flips over A4 offsuit.

Flop comes: 6 10 6
Flops the boat.... then, turn A, river A. Higher boat. 99% to 1% wow

David...Empire is a mirror site of Party Poker, so all cash games you play are against people on empire and party. The only difference is their tournaments and promotions. They have a couple of daily freerolls and a lot of money added tourneys. They also have a tournament masters program where u can actually win good stuff (like a seat at the 2005 WSOP) for playing in and doing good in a lot of tournaments each month. Empire just seems to have more freerolls and better promos lately. Its an easy switch from party poker b/c it looks exactly the same and everything is done in basically the same manner. The biggest thing that Party Poker has and Empire doesn't is the bad beat jackpot but we all know the odds against actually hitting that

I played in my first good tourney here last night. It was a 48 person, $50 buy-in that paid out the top 5. Well, like many tournies, there's always that 1 guy with the big stack who just keeps calling with anything and catching, and of course I always run into him. You know the guy I am talking about, the one who calls an all-in for half his stack with J3 simply because he "has a face card", and inevitably the flop comes JJ7 and your holding KK.

Well, I was down to the last 5, so I was in the money. First place payed out $1000, and of course, that's what I was playing for. I had about 7000 chips, and we all started with 1500, so with a total of 72000 chips on the table, I was well below the average stack. The really loose guy with the big stack had like 40000 chips though, so I wasn't that bad off compared to the other 3 guys (I think I was 4th in chips). Anyways, I am on the big blind, and the guy (we'll call him dumbass) is in the seat 2 to the left of me. The first guy folds, he calls, the next guy folds, the small blind calls, and I look at my cards. KQ suited, a fairly good hand.

At this point, I have a few options. I could check, which I would consider doing if the small blind hadn't limped in. I KNEW I had dumbass beat, because he had raised huge anytime he had Ax or a pocket pair. I assumed I had the small blind beat (KQ suited 5 handed with the blinds screaming up is a pretty good assumption). So, 99% confident that I had the best hand I went all-in for another 6500 chips. Dumbass thinks about it for only a second and calls, and the small blind folds. I flip over my KQ and he flips over K10, so I am a huge favorite here. Granted, K10 is not a horrible hand to play here if you are Jesus-stacked like he was, as a matter of fact, I might have called too.

Anyways the board ended up being 389JQ, giving him the nut straight and I was knocked out in fifth, which was very disappointing. I'm sure as you all know, the worst feeling in poker is to make the right read at the right time, and then get outdrawn when you are a really big favorite. The worst part about it was how dumb some people can be. He tried to make me feel better after the hand by telling me it was pretty much a 50/50 toss-up pre-flop. Of course I just wanted to go off and tell him exactly how much of an underdog he was, probably on the magnitude of 75-80%, but there is no arguing with stupidity. The good answer would have been, "Man, I got lucky" or perhaps "I thought you had a small pocket pair and I figured why not", but his sheer dumbness just pissed me off, plus the fact that his dumbness cost me about $800.

I would have loved to have won, but I feel I made the right play every time, and I really feel that, playing with that caliber of people, that I WOULD win every time if luck wasn't involved. Oh well..... I am used to bad beats.
