I keep getting them on my upper lip from shaving, is there any way to get rid of them or to prevent them from forming. it's really starting to piss me off

i know guys are opposed to this...

but why dont you go get it waxed? it won't grow back for atleast 2 weeks and waxing typically doesnt give ingrown hairs.

Hmm, I usually get them on my neck. Upper lip would suck.

I used to have a girlfriend that enjoyed taking care of them...go figure!

could ingrown hairs be the result of using a not-so-new, dull razor?

ponder...

My neck hurts when I touch it due to shaving. I think that once I am done with this co-op rotation I am just gonna grow a temporary beard over winter break and give the skin some time to heal.

if it prevents those irritating little red bumps, then why not? you dont have to tell the world you waxed and you know the chinese chick that does it for you can't speak enough english to tell everyone

There's stuff you can apply that will get rid of the ingrown hair. There's a brand called "TendSkin" (or something like that) that my spa sells. You apply it twice a day until the ingrown hair is gone, then use it daily for a period of time afterward to prevent it from coming back. It also gets rid of bumps caused by shaving or waxing.

I really like the Gillete post shave healer/lotion. It prevents alot of those red bumbs and it has a great soothing affect! Its only 5 bucks or so, so its worth a shot.

^That's the point. If your face is irritated/ingrown you don't want that close a shave.

clean the area well before you shave
shave with the grain of your face not against it
before you begin to shave put a hot moist towel to the skin which will bring to surface any clogged pores which will help

(other theories: Use a conditioner on your face so that the hair is softer and doesn't irrate the skin so badly
see a dermetologist if your hair is curly (That can cause major problems)).

1. don't press down as hard when you shave ingrown hairs are usually the result of shaving too closely, usually on dry skin...

2. mosturize with some man lotion

3. exfoliate with some more man shit to keep the tip of the hair on the surface.

go to eckerds and spend $5-20 and you'll be straight. Clinique for Men has some really nice stuff if you're not too much of a pussy to go to the counter.. they're at Hechts and Belks

i usually rub a little bit of rubbing alcohol on my legs after I shave... it's kinda brutal if you have a lot of nicks, but I don't get bumps anymore.

I forgot what it's called, bumpstopper i think, but get the ones with the black dude on the front with the gross ass bumps

I didn't know white men could get ingrown hairs, I thought it was a coarse, curly hair black man thing

Also, get an electric razor, thats what I use, along with the bump creme and my girl tweezing out anything left after I shave, and my skin gets alot less irritated

Are you kidding? If I don't go against the grain I might as well not shave at all, b/c it won't shave close for shit.

I have dark/thick hair so if I shave with pretty much anything less then a cheese grater (against the grain) it looks (and feels) like I did nothing.

I had gotten some really bad ingrown hairs on my bikini line at the end of summer from shaving and my surgeon said to use hair conditioner instead of shaving cream as well.

my gf bought me a bottle of Tend Skin. you apply it like an aftershave and it prevents all of that.

then at least make sure you stroke with the grain once or twice before going against the grain, so there isn't as much that you're pulling against.

also try shaving right after a hot shower, or wash your face with hot water right before shaving.

I second using this stuff

also use a single blade razor.. double and triple blades cut the hair below the skin.

I used to get ingrown hairs from shaving, but it's a lot less these days.

if you "have" to shave against the grain, then don't bother bitching about ingrown hairs...

just make sure you shower before you shave. Exfoliate your face as well. Use a decent shave gel. And don't use aftershave, just splash cold water on your face immediately afterwards to close the pores.

if you can't get a close enough shave that way, then just grow a beard because you have no hope.

I have a lot of irritation on the inside of my neck. I do have to shave against the grain and I shave in the shower... yes, no mirror. I use an aloe gel stuff sometimes, but it never completely goes away. I probably should use new blades... I use them way past the blue stripe.

What "man exfoliators" are availible? I could probably use that.

yea i have the same problem when i use a straight edge razor, i get razor burn like a son bitch...i actually went out and got a very very nice electric razor and it really does get it very close and its quite pleasing to my little precious skin. I have curly hair as well which REALLY sucks for me but when im not wanting to shave every day, i let it grow a tad and take the beard trimmer part that doesnt get it really close but leaves that '5 o clock' shadow look...kinda scruffy lookin and doesnt get my skin irritated...it works...so many options, but i say get a good lectric

I always swipe once with the grain, then go against the grain to get it close. Oh, and I shave in the shower, after I've already done everything else so my face is always clean.

Tend Skin isn't bad, but it doesn't really solve the problem; it improves it somewhat, for me at least. It's essentially Aspirin and alcohol. The Aspirin reduces redness and alcohol dries out the skin. MiN Solution 2 is the same stuff, except it comes with a roller ball (http://minsolution2.com/). It's no more effective, but it's easier to apply.

I've tried all sorts of exfoliants, moisturisers, face washes and shaving oils/gels/foams/waxes. Currently, I'm using a combination of Molton Brown Micro-exfoliator before (http://www.moltonbrown.co.uk/uk/product.html?productID=160), Clarins Smooth Shave (http://uk.clarinsmen.com/product_98.html) for shaving and MiN Solution 2 after, followed by Clarins Moisture Gel (http://uk.clarinsmen.com/product_102.html).

Weekly face masks are meant to help, but it's a lot of effort. Using a hot towel is good too (opens the pores), but time consuming. Washing your face with hot water is the next best thing, or having a hot shower beforehand.

Shaving with the grain is helpful, which is down your face and up your neck. As is changing your blade every 3-4 uses. I prefer Mach 3 Turbo blades; the power thing is a total gimmick and any more than 3 blades is too harsh on the skin.

Finally, applying shaving gel/foam with a brush helps to lift the hair, for a closer shave, and applying cold water afterwards closes the pores.

I agree with using a brush to apply the gel/cream and also rinsing your face with cold water to close the pores.

I never use the aloe gel cause for some reason my face never liked it and i'd always seem to break out. So i've been using regular barbasol and/or shave soap.

For the redness and bumps i highly recommend Neutrogena Razor Defense Face Lotion. I always apply it generously on my neck after a shave and it helps prevent the bumps very well.

That's what i thought at first aswell, but over halloween i was at my friend's place and he had one and the new Mach3 Comfort Gel. I used both and had one of the smoothest shaves i'd ever had. I also shaved in the shower that time so it could have been another factor in it.

Random...I was wondering if any of you guys have ever gone into a barber shop and had one of those flat blade shaves like they did in the 50's. I've always wanted to try it and see how it was
