how big is your red tail catfish? I know they can get pretty big. I saw one at Fish Pro the other day.

Redtail cat is 20-22 in I was in there Saturday. Didnt see it. If I can find a tank big enough I may get a pair of them to grow big enough to put into the big tank with the other one. Its hard to find any tankmates big enough to keep with it. 16in Arowana ended up being a snack. I have an 10in oscar in there now but I want to get rid of it for something more interesting.

^that was the small one you saw. It was sold to two guys when I was there last week. The one I was talking about earlier is huge. It was in one of the big tanks they put behind the cash register.

theres a reptile show in columbia, sc this weekend, and they should have tons of tanks to choose from. for tanks used as terraria (which basically have thinner glass), they usually go about $1/gal, not sure how much the thicker-glassed ones go for, but its a helluva lot cheaper than buying a tank at a pet store.

i know im going.

I don't think reptile tank is suitable to be used as aquarium.

just out of curiousity, when you get to the big fish tanks (200 gal +), do you have to worry about where you locate them in the house in terms of structural integrity?

Yes, I estimate that my 265 gallon weighs aprox 4000 lbs on a footprint of 2ft X 7ft. I was told it is nessary to place the tank perpendicular to the floor joists and preferably in a corner. Luckly for me the addition to my house was built with 2 X10's on 16" centers. I set the tank in place empty and checked for plumb. Filled and rechecked no movement was measured. Worst come to worst you can always reinforce from the under your house.

I would assume that the tank that big probably be best put at the bottom floor of the house.

Yeah it would be a good idea, also if you were to ever have a leak you wouldnt have ceiling damage. I think you would have a hell of a time getting up any amount of stairs. My tank empty was aprox 600 lbs. I suppose if you really wanted a large tank on a second or third story then you could consult a contractor to verify the structure is sound.

A 265 empty is no where close to 600lbs.

I installed a 360g in Marion Jones's (yes the track star) house, and me and my roommate (both managers at the time) handled it no problem up a flight of porch stairs and into a wall...
