yea itunes won't freak too bad about missing songs..i THINK it only messes with files that are being added to your ipod or whatever..it doesn't just go through and check for every file everytime you hit sync or anything.

soo yea, just move some shit you don't listen to often over to an external drive and be done with it. or delete some shit. no way in hell you have 200gigs of shit with nothing you can't get rid of

I have an external Seagate 1.5TB and I highly recommend it. The Seagate manager app has backup and synchronization utilities built-in. It makes it really easy for me to dump files on my root, have them automatically transfer over to my external (Sync config), and then promptly shift+delete that shit off my root. It helps to keep things cleaner.

my C drive is 220ish gigs, 203 of which are being used
my D drive is 9 gigs, 3 of which are being used (recovery files)

I need 20 gigs free on C drive.

Is there anyway to move over some of the gigs from D to C without totally repartitioning my HD (which I assume would make me lose the recovery files)"

find a copy of acronis disk director
boot to it
take free space from d: and move it to c:
let acronis do the work
done.

WTF, everyone here sucks at math.

if you have 17GB free and need 20GB free, you just need to move 3GB of data from C: to D: since D: has 6GB free.

it's called COPY/PASTE

I had to explain zip files to my coworker today. And doubleclicking to open a program. And what to do when something says "'press return to continue"...

I feel like I've opened up my own tech support hotline at work.

When did people completely give up on reading?

Some people just give up on even trying to do things for themselves when they discover other people that will do everything for them. Why read instructions when you're already in the habit of being intimidated and asking for help on every little thing.

A good one from another coworker:

Quote :
"For every command we asked the customer to execute he told us the command was not recognized.
When we asked for a show version and the response from the customer was again that the command was not recognized we got suspicious and went for a webex.
It turned out that the commands were being entered in a DOS prompt..."

^^ around here, ftp is just any way of transferring files w/o email. the server is also anything to do with the internet, in house or from the provider. the server is the router, modem, and data storage. people like to call windows 7, windows veesta 7. an [MS] office document is a word doc.

oh and somehow no one can understand that to make a PDF, just go to Print > Adobe PDF. they think it's some sort of voodoo magic that only i can do.

This shit happened AGAIN yesterday morning. I had 35 fucking irrelevant emails in my inbox within an hour. In between idiots asking to be taken off a list you CAN'T BE TAKEN OFF all because of one mistaken email, there are other people trying to explain the 'reply' and 'reply all' features, even going so far as adding screenshots.

I wanted to jump in and say ARE YOU FUCKERS ILLITERATE, but I didn't feel like losing my job.

"A Tennessee state trooper who accidentally sent an e-mail proclaiming white pride to 787 state employees has been suspended for 15 days without pay and will have to attend diversity training.

The e-mail from Trooper Brent Gobbell states, in part, "You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member ... you call him a racist." It also includes a list of racist epithets.

The state Department of Safety says Gobbell sent the e-mail to himself so he could print a copy. He did not realize he had also sent it to hundreds of state employees.

An investigation revealed that Gobbell later deleted his responses to the original e-mail and attempted to delete the original too. Gobbell has apologized."

yeah, we have at least 2 or 3 of those that get viral at cisco each year.

After the third or so email, those of us who know how to use email just create a filter to trash it all, while the rest of the company gets their panties wadded up about it, and of course replies all to let everyone know how they feel.

Whenever a computer starts acting up, my supervisor asks, "Did you download your computer?"

me- You mean restart it?
her- That's what I asked. Did you download it?
me- Downloading is when you are transferingretrieving a file from a server.
her- No, I asked if you shut the computer DOWN, then LOADed it up again. That's DOWNLOAD.
me-
her- So did you download it?
me- Yes, I've rebooted it and it's fine now.

while not quite as bad, ppl where i work can't seem to grasp the difference between a file and a folder. theyre like "put that in the file on the server" im like..how do you put a file in a file?

then upload vs download is a complete mind blower

and yea, the offline thing is common here too

Files and folders are really just abstract semantics.

Foxfire was a very successful series of magazines and books that recorded folk traditions and taught readers how to do things the old fashioned way: how to churn butter, the proper use of woodworking handtools, etc. It's excellent reading and will be valuable knowledge when the technological apocalypse comes. So anyone of that age can be forgiven for referring to the browser as such. I did the same when the browser was new.

Now I dunno the context behind this, but I know that people have been saying 'offline' before the internet became popular.Like when you're in a meeting and someone asks a question and they say 'I'll get with you offline about that,' meaning 'I'll talk with you later, when we're not fucking up the flow of this meeting.'

There's a lot of foolish stuff like this happening where now I work.

We had a nice "reply to all" series of spam emails about pot at work. It was loltastic.

The terminology people use as technobabble around the office makes me want to bang my head into a wall. I just want to know how they learned to associate that word with that string of actions. Also, when my coworker didn't know that the mouse wheel was the third mouse button and had no concept of how to scroll around an autocad drawing, part of me died. When the guy assigning me work (a level above me) closed an open word document and MS word before opening word again to open another doc file (going through the menu), part of me died. When I watch some of my coworkers try to type with one or two fingers, part of me dies. When I hear people complain that their computers are slow because they got a lot of mail that day, part of me dies.

When I see engineers my age have trouble with simple, painfully explicit instructions on how to write down a bunch of numbers and then transfer them to an .xls file, part of me thinks that I need to consider working somewhere else down the road. The other part of me dies (of course ). The guy ended up going through the trouble of copying some other random xls file in the directory, deleting the numbers already in the file, then going through and manually entering in the data, manually adding up the subtotal and total cells in the spreadsheet, and then reporting back as if he had done a great thing.

I just don't get it. How did these people ever graduate from college? How do people like this continue to pull off living each day? It's enough to make a fella turn to eugenics.

I also kinda cringe when people start asking me questions about computers as well. "Well, I've already made sure there are zero viruses or trojans or batmans on my computerwebs, but I still have *problem that only happens when you go to porn sites and install the shit it tells you to install*." Ah, well gee that sounds like a virus problem but if it's clean and *problem doesn't happen in other situations* then maybe you should take it up with *completely innocent party that is not me that will prove an acceptable distraction*. I just don't want to go down that road with a coworker.

There's other damned idiot problems at work as well. People don't know how to use drawing scales. People don't know the difference between an XLS spreadsheet and a table in MS word. People act like you've accomplished something great when you search for and attach a printer to your computer that's located in a different part of the building.

I've also had people argue with me for two hours (TWO HOURS) that I should set up an email like so:

Blah Blahblahblah Blahityblah
1 Drugs are This is seriously going to.
bad mmkay. fucking suck in a second.
2 Honestly why am I Don't you realize that if this is viewed
writing this like this. on a smaller monitor that it will become
3 completely and utterly Seriously, what the fuck, man?
illegible?

As opposed to:

Item 1 - Name
Summary: Rabble rabble.
Completed: Date
Notes: Robble robble.

Two fucking hours. Two.

I see both sides of this. I definitely think it looks like IBM overreacted....

HOWEVER, if I were in the contractor's position - I certainly would not have rocked the boat. They were shipping him a new computer, but he had to be the "smart guy" and go behind their back - wasting additional IBM tech support resources to try to fix the problem his way.

The simple fact is this - if you're an established full time employee, you can pull shit like this and probably piss some people off, but if you're a badass you can get away with it.

If you're applying for a damn job then you're just an idiot for pulling this stunt! I know that once I had applied for my job, I did everything they told me to do, exactly how they told me to do it, until I had gotten my first paycheck.

They may have deduced that if he was this much of a trouble-maker even before he had the job, god only knows how bad he would rock the boat once he had a signed contract. I'm sure we've all worked with pricks like this before who can't leave well enough alone and think they need to solve every single problem they see.... What they fail to realize is that sometimes those problems are the lesser of two evils and they're not doing anyone any favors by stirring shit up.

In a lot of places that would be considered as being proactive, going above and beyond, etc.

IBM is obviously a different place, but that kind of thing would definitely get you hired at a place like Cisco, and even more so at smaller outfits. That sort of drive to solve problems is valued, not discouraged.

I'm saying that I agree that IBM over-reacted, but I'm also saying that guy is a dumbass for rocking the boat before anything was signed.

And you're telling me that there are no egos at Cisco that wouldn't look too kindly on some random-ass contractor who isn't even hired that highlights a problem with something that they own? I don't believe that shit for one minute.

I mean, I don't even have that much of a work ego, but if some random schmuck started highlighting my baggage after I had already sent him a free laptop to workaround the problem, yea... I would be pissed off too.

Quote :

I totally agree. The fact that he is now blackballed from IBM is a pretty good indication that there's more to the story... Also the fact that he's the type to burn bridges publically and ruin his reputation with other companies is also an indication of the type of personality that we're dealing with here.... Again, like I said... The "rock the boat" for no good reason type.
