What is that crap? Either you want to marry her, or you don't. Buy her a fucking pendant if you don't have the nads for an engagement ring.

yeah, that's the stupidest fucking idea i've ever heard of.

Wedding ring? Ok.
Engagement ring? "I promise to marry you." Ok, but no more.

Promise ring? "I promise to promise to marry you." What in the hell? What's next? A pre-promise ring made out of tin foil? "I promise to promise to promise to marry you."

1. I don't want to get married at 19 and I don't want to be engaged for 4 years.

2. I don't have the paper for that kind of shit anyways.

3. Tired of my girlfriend sweating my nuts about it.

I'm just curious, which part makes me a pussy?

Not wanting to get married when I can't live with someone or not wanting to be engaged for longer than I've gone out with her?

no, all of that's fine.

caving in and buying something as gay as a promise ring is bad.

Quote :
"A promise ring or friendship ring is a small, inexpensive ring given to a boyfriend or girlfriend, to promise not to court a rival. These indicate merely that serious courting is under way. No permanent commitment has been made by either party, but they give the partners an excuse for refusing social invitations from others."

from wikipedia

and a search of http://www.reeds.com using the word "promise" yields 25 results, all but 2 are under $150
and most are between $99 and $129

yeah, i think jewelry is dumb, too, but chicks like it for for odd reason.

no big deal--i like cool stuff, they like shiny trinkets. whatever, i guess i'll buy them shiny trinkets, then (actually i've never really bought much of anything for any girls, but if i had one i liked, i would...although i'd rather have a girl more into my kind of stuff, who'd want skiing/SCUBA gear or something, or maybe a new motorcycle jacket or aviation headset, or something like that, but i digress)

the problem i have with a promise ring isn't that it's worthless or how much it costs...it's the symbology behind it.

you find a girl who wants an aviation headset more than a piece of jewelry and you go ahead and buy her the engagement ring

and elaborate on the symbology behind it plz, or at least why it chaps your ass

My coworker got a promise ring over Christmas.

He's 28 and she's 27...she seemed disappointed and she said he was apologetic.

^^^haha, i concur.

although the aviation headset and motorcycle jacket would be less cool than a girl who wanted a new piece of skiing/SCUBA gear...flying and motorcycling is something i'd just as soon do by myself or with my boys...but i'd love to have a chick who wanted to ski and dive with me.

the symbology is what i said before--it's a pre-engagement ring. "I promise to promise to marry you." The commitment symbolized is far in excess of what is actually warranted until you're ready to propose to her. That's bad business.

Furthermore, I think it would cheapen things a little when you really do get her a ring that means something.

and it's just dumb, and i don't like things that are dumb.

ive never heard of anyone over 18 getting one of these. i think its just us girls' way of trying to get a commitment out of a guy. ive never had one, but i had a friend who got one when she was like 16, she lost it, but she's still with that guy. its like you're too young to get engaged, but you are still as serious about eachother as you can be at 16 years old.

yeah, i always thought promise rings were below age able to get married.

i would be embarrassed to death to show off a promise ring.. cause everyone i know would be like.. "what-- so he doesnt want to marry you then, does he..".

i think it means more than that in most people's eyes

and i think getting a ring just for that is stupid...i mean, i'd be ok, because i hardly ever have monogomous relationships, but that would be a killer for a lot of people to buy a girl a ring every time they made any sort of commintment to each other.

why not invest that cash you would spend on a promise ring so you can buy a better engagement ring . . . I'm sure your lady would be ok with that

I would think she would be much happier with a larger diamond than a promise ring in the long run

It's more like "I promise you won't regret letting me tap that"
Whether you mean it or not doesn't matter, the girl let it go for a a $15 dollar ring from a kiosk at the mall.

I think promise rings are stuuuuppppiiiiddddddd. I think you only have two ring fingers for a reason. One for a class ring and one for an engagement ring. If you want to promise to promise to marry me, u can say that with something else. Jewelry seems like such a wasted investment to me at times, especially considering how often I lose it. I mec even an engagement ring that looks halfway decent is more than a down payment on a car. Buy me the damn car!

a promise ring means one of two things:

1) I can now be officially mad if I find out you fucked someone else.

2) I'm so Christian, and this ring is proof that we're not fucking.
