Good point about the ability to replace six after the group stages. Not even fake mad anymore.

A rested Morris will be nice so he can get a hat trick in the final against Mexico.

Got 2 tickets in section 500 for this quarter final USA game. Unless they somehow don't finish in the top 2....

After watching Chile last night I realize that Bradley is a poor man's Valdivia. If only Bradley could find space and create like that the US would be golden.

Yea Bradley's performance at the WC was underwhelming at best. Still I am glad we have someone of his quality than not.

^ this.

He gets a short league ban, nothing internationally, and a permanent vacation from a tournament that very few people give a shit about.

Timbers fan talks about the Seattle Sounders

Quote :
"The whole organization is a clown show. Marching bands, fire-breathing goal posts, jumbotron-led chants, shooting off streamers -- none of that is authentic. It's all manufactured. The fact that they play in an NFL stadium, with gridiron marks on the pitch is disrespectful to the game of soccer."

hated to miss it and glad we won, but it sounds like I didn't miss much in terms of our actual performance :/

glad to see Dempsey net two. Sounds like our D is still very shaky based on the feedback I got from a few friends and reading recap comments.

I can see what Klinsmann wants to do but it's not working (and not going to). He's putting 4 passers at defense, regardless of their defensive abilities, and wants them to funnel it to Beckerman/Bradley who are also decent short passers. Yedlin/Zardes use their speed to get up and down the outside, Jozy can hold up, and Dempsey can run off him.

He overrates Bradley/Beckerman's ability to dictate a game and underrates the importance of solid defending. When we lose possession, our defense does not look good in 1v1 situations. Combine that with an improved Honduras side that put pressure on our defense and we could never really get the possession started. Chandler mostly, but all of them were just giving the ball away immediately.

When he fucks up a game plan, he's usually pretty good at adapting and correcting the mistakes in the second half and he didn't do it last night. He did get Chandler off but Wondo for Jozy up a goal in the 2nd half? No. Zusi? No.

Guzan is filthy though and I'm pretty sure this GC will lock the spot up for him for good and Howard is more less done as our #1.

I'd do something like this. Put a real LB and RB in. Let Brooks do the passing and Omar do the defending. Get some more possession in the midfield and get Johnson in the attack.

----------- Dempsey ------------

Johnson --- Bradley --- Bedoya

---------- Mix -- Becks -----------

Garza -- Brooks -- Omar -- Yedlin

I think Bradley and Beckerman are good enough to "dictate the game"...at least to a point where we'll get enough scoring chances (I mean...look at the Netherlands and Germany games). Our problem is that our defense just fucking blows. We can't get or keep possession long enough to have more attacks and they aren't even great passers (if that's what he's looking for).

Our defense is scary bad.

There's a difference in getting scoring chances and dictating a game. JK wants to use possession as a defensive strategy imho and it's just not working. Bradley can make a killer pass sometimes but he and Beckerman are not dominating box to box midfielders.

Right and a lot of that is on the midfield, Zardes/Yedlin included. Those friendly wins had midfields with Mix/Morales instead of those two and we saw more possession than against Honduras. Yedlin is a RB and Zardes is a CF.

USA drops to 34th in the FIFA world rankings. Currently behind Tunisia, Hungary, Poland, Scotalnd, Ukraine, and more.

Wales, meanwhile, is now 10th in the world.

FIFA rankings are such a joke. Wales wasn't even at the last world cup and US is coming off two big friendly wins and a good run at the World Cup. Pretty hilarious.

Why are we casually dismissing Romania being even higher. When is the last time they made ANY major tournament.

At least Wales has one legit world class player and another second tier star..

Haiti's biggest weakness is being shaken easily. Turn up the intensity to 7.0 and we should cruise in the second half.

A little slower to the ball and less physical than Panama has been so far. Defense looking soft - and there goes Brooks with the take down and yellow *sigh*

Much easier path to the finals with Jamaica winning group b. Won't face Mexico or Costa Rica until the finals, not that any game is a given the way we've looked thus far.

I was really surprised when aimorris mentioned that Corona didn't make the team. He played really well last summer, and JK should be using these comps to continue to cap young players because they don't mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. We're gonna need these kids in 2018.

Why do we regress so severely after each world cup. We go from competing with the big boys of the world to competing with carribean island nations.

[Edited on July 16, 2015 at 6:39 AM. Reason : Concacaaf and coenbol should combine permanently. It would still be smaller than uefa]

I don't know anything about soccer.

With that being said, do we have to win this to go to the World Cup?

No. There are 6 qualifying regions for the World Cup (CONCACAF, OFC, CAF, AFC, UEFA, CONMEBOL). Every region has its own regional tournament. The winners of the regional tournaments, the World Cup Champion, and the World Cup host nation all play in something called the Confederations Cup at the location of the World Cup, one year before the World Cup. That is what the regional tournament winners qualify for. The First Copa America tournament predates the first World Cup and Olympic soccer tournaments. Regional cups have been a long standing tradition in soccer, but have no connection to the World Cup. The First Gold Cup was held in 1991.

^^^ huh? We have played fine. EVERY gold cup group stage is a slog and every time we struggle people say the same thing.

BUT, its not a surprise and it happens across the world. New players are introduced to the first team at the start of a cycle and it takes time to gel and figure out who can contribute.

Since we won the 2013 Gold Cup, if we win this one, we automatically qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup. If someone else wins, we play them in a single game later this year, and the winner of that game advances to 2017.

Games that matter for us qualifying for the World Cup won't start until November.

^x5 imo we have played pretty poorly. Now, I'm not too worried given the experimentation with the lineup and with some less experienced, young players. But I definitely wouldn't say we have played well from what I have seen.

All this complaining about the MNT, we are getting the results. I watched the games, they weren't anything close to inspiring, but they finished first in the group and were guaranteed of that after only two games. We are 6-0-1 in our last seven games with wins over Mexico, Germany and Netherlands. The only non-win was a draw in a meaningless game for us against a Panama team that needed a result to move on. Playing against the style of a lot of these concacaf teams, they work hard to make it an ugly game since they know they don't have the same talent. Look at the what happened to Mexico or Costa Rica. It could be a lot worse.

Who knows what's going to happen in the knockout round, but as long as we're winning, I'm not complaining.
