Oh dear, Obama's lost his remaining credibility with the 5 liberals who actually thought he'd be any different from Bush as far as the liberty-for-security trade.

"House GOP blocks Violence Against Women Act"
http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/01/02/16305284-house-gop-blocks-violence-against-women-act

Quote :
"And then there's the Violence Against Women Act, which was supposed to be one of the year's easy ones. It wasn't.

Back in April, the Senate approved VAWA reauthorization fairly easily, with a 68 to 31 vote. The bill was co-written by a liberal Democrat (Vermont's Pat Leahy) and a conservative Republican (Idaho's Mike Crapo), and seemed on track to be reauthorized without much of a fuss, just as it was in 2000 and 2005.

But House Republicans insisted the bill is too supportive of immigrants, the LGBT community, and Native Americans"

I thought one of the lessons of losing the election to Obama had to do with treatment of women, the latino community, and minorities in general.

"House GOP To Re-Fund DOMA Defense"

Quote :
"In one of the first actions of the 113th Congress, which begins today, the House GOP is pushing to reauthorize the funding for the defense of DOMA."

"With Millions Still Waiting For Sandy Relief, Republicans Reintroduce Obamacare Repeal"
http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/01/03/1394071/bachmann-repeal-obamacare/

Quote :
"The 112th Congress gaveled to a close on Thursday afternoon without passing a relief package for victims of Hurricane Sandy or reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, but Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) isn’t too concerned about finishing what Republicans had left undone. Instead, at 12:00 PM she introduced the very first piece of legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/03/ndaa-obama-indefinite-detention_n_2402601.html

President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 on Wednesday, despite his own threat to veto it over prohibitions on closing the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.

Civil liberties advocates had roundly criticized the bill over Guantanamo and a separate section that could allow the military to indefinitely detain American citizens on suspicions of supporting terrorism. Just as he did with last year's version of the bill, however, Obama decided that the need to pass the NDAA, which also sets the armed forces' $633 billion budget for the 2013 fiscal year, was simply "too great to ignore," according to a presidential signing statement released in the early morning hours Thursday.

This after renewing Bush era warrantless wiretapping via the amended FISA act.

John Brennan is the new director of the CIA. Fun for everyone. This is the same dude who said on the record that our drone strikes haven't killed any civilians:

Quote :
"In fact I can say that the types of operations… that the US has been involved in, in the counter-terrorism realm, that nearly for the past year there hasn’t been a single collateral death because of the exceptional proficiency, precision of the capabilities that we’ve been able to develop.’..."

If yah cant win, change the rules, that is what the Republicans are thinking now...base the electoral vote on the districts and since there are more states where Republicans control everything, they will probably pass it. Mitt would the majority of VA delegates if that occurred this past election. The VA senate will vote on it soon.

Doesn't it?

It has nothing to do with self defense, if not for court rulings transforming it that way.

no, it doesn't. no one has a constitutional right to hunt.

the courts had to say it was about self defense. they're afraid of what would happen if they actually interpreted as it was originally intended. instilling that fear is actually the whole point.

it's funny you say that because it's more of a rifle stance than what you'd see from skeet shooters, but it's whatever. i mean, i could sit here and compare him to olympic shotgunners, but that wouldn't really be fair. he's shooting the shotgun exactly how anyone with little shotgun experience would, which is exactly how he should. he's not a gun guy, and that's ok.

[Edited on February 3, 2013 at 11:38 AM. Reason : that shotgun doesn't really fit him either, so that doesn't help.]

^ so just make a new thread.

And the point of "voter fraud doesn't happen" isn't that fraud doesn't exist, because clearly it does.

It's that the type of fraud that exists isn't combatable by voter ID laws. Voter ID laws, as admitted by members of the GOP, are designed to disenfranchise voters.

its not statistically significant

if we are looking at voting reform there are many more important and statistically significant issues ahead of individual voter fraud.

(there is also the issue that we know that electronic voting machines don't work and in some places have given completely opposite results of what they should, but no one wants to talk about it. its not conspiracy, it should be scary)

Exactly. Absentee voting has more fraud than in person voting fraud, but it's not being touched in NC because it tends towards the GOP.

Quote :
"its not statistically significant"

Unfortunately all the public opinion polling says that when talking to the average person, saying fraud is rare hurts your credibility, and harping on it by showing data to back up your claim hurts your credibility more. It's a lose-lose situation in the public opinion game. Ignore it, and let disenfranchisement happen, or call it out, and disenfranchisement still happens and now people on average trust your opinion less.

The most effective argument against photo ID isn't that it doesn't address the rare kind of fraud that does happen, it's that its politicians trying to pick voters instead of voters getting to pick politicians. Because everyone hates a politician.

all politics is politicians picking voters, that's what every get out the vote effort is about. its why campaigns don't spend time where they will lose. its why we have gerrymandering. etc...

obviously this has no relevance to actual policy

but this is a pretty solid PR recovery. most politicians who would make this kind of mistake would try to gloss over it and avoid the attention. obama's team managed to do a good job of making fun of itself while using it as an opportunity to focus back on the real issue they are trying to appeal to the public about
