I'm pretty sure that I saw more accidents this morning than I saw all of last year.

I just drove into work (morrisville) from my house (south Raleigh). All roads I drove on in Raleigh were solid ice. I-40 was also solid ice all the way to around the Aviation exit, #285. Then for whatever reason the roads are just wet, little to no ice. Airport Blvd was 95% ice free.

Anyone driving on I-40 in Raleigh right now should be EXTREMELY cautious. I also saw a few cars spin out and hit shit while driving.

If the temperature keeps rising like it's supposed to and if it rains like it's supposed to, it shouldn't be a problem. If it doesn't rain enough, any ice down probably will not melt in time.

temps will continue to increase through the evening and night, but at 5pm they will still be hovering around 32-34 if the weather follows the forecast. you will want to use caution, there will still be some slick spots unless the rain is heavy enough and I'm betting the people who did decide to go to work today will find plenty of ways to turn the evening commute into a shit show.

Look at the tire lines in the path of travel just past the bridge

People don't get the whole "bridges ice before road" caution signs until it's too late.

When I drove over that bridge it was ice on the bridge and ice off the bridge.

i drove back to Charlotte from Raleigh last night and got caught in the beginning of this. On 40W between Mebane and Greensboro it turned into an absolute shit show. Cars sliding off the road left and right, getting stuck on the uphill portions from lack of traction, it was terrible. Seemed like no one was prepared for it starting that early and no one wanted to slow down before it was too late.

More than once this morning I had cars on my ass on I-40, while we were driving on solid ice. Fucking unbelievable.

I had a jackass change lanes right in front of me this morning (into my lane), then quickly slow down, ride the brakes down each hill, and then try to accelerate going uphill. Pretty much everything you shouldn't do in slick conditions.

I made that drive a number of years ago during an ice storm. Took me like 4.5 hours to make the drive, in a damn 2WD SUV. Saw multiple cars slide off to both sides of the road. Fucking scary stuff.

Yep, it was absolutely nuts. Once the lane stripes disappeared i put my truck in 4WD high and moved to the right lane. I had cars of all sorts driving by me. About 10 miles up ahead a 2WD gmc truck that had blown past me was sideways against the center guard rails and half a dozen more had all lost control in varying degrees.

But as soon as i got off of the 85 bypass it was like no snow storm had ever existed. Smooth and dry all the way home.

all of the main roads were already fine yesterday, and its above freezing and sunny all day today so the side roads will melt. at the most i would expect a 2-hr delay, i can't imagine schools being closed tomorrow.

^^^Do you get stiff shoulders and stuff from holding the wheel so intently for a long time?

Really, every part of me gets exhausted when I have to drive like that, just from having to pay such close attention to everything. It's like a test of endurance where you feel like you're never gonna make it, and you have to avoid getting sloppy.

Y'all know what I'm talking about, or am I doing something wrong?

If it actually heats up, then we're good.

But I'm starting to worry it's gonna be freezing forever.

It can be pretty stressful when you have to drive for consecutive hours and have pretty much zero margin for error.

driving under those conditions is definitely more stressful. Usually that's a drive i can do in my sleep, but i was certainly on high alert last night.

It was also one of those "turn the music down so i can see" type drives >_<

After a white-knuckle driving experience, I imagine that's what it is like to be a race car driver, except at much slower speeds.

The key is to get a good drift going so you can take turns much faster but not fast enough so you slide off the road or into another car.

February is flying by. I suppose the window is starting to close on a good snow this year...but then again, the biggest one of last year was at the very end of this month. Fingers crossed

Drove back to CLT from Southern Virginia last night, and it was nerve-wracking. Took 421 down from Boone, because I didn't want to chance NC16 at all, figuring that 421 would be clear. Nope, half-inch of snow on the road all the way to 77. Scary stuff. 77 was basically the same for 20 miles, then you could at least see the road, though there was an inch of snow in between the lanes. Statesville and beyond it was smooth sailing.

On 421, it was safe to be doing about 35, as long as you weren't dumb. 77, 50-55 was reasonable once you could see the road, but be ready to lift if some chucklefuck is doing 20mph up ahead. That was probably the most dangerous part, the people who were too scared to be driving, but were hell-bent on being on the interstate for whatever reason. Even worse was when they were doing it in the left lane. What the hell, man?

I mean I didn't go out yesterday, but the 5 or 6 wrecks on 440 this morning makes me think anything falling from the sky creates a disaster.
