yeah I thought ep2 was a tad boring. No doubt that the story starts picking up soon after.

Also surprised that Theon Greyjoy hasn't had more mention of his role with the Starks, but then again they barely even mentioned Rickon.

Can they end an episode without something terrible happening?

Great show though (even though we definitely had to pause and look up Lannister family history at one point)

I also totally ripped the intro song so I could listen to it at work

You must not have read the books. "Terrible things happening" is pretty much GRRM's mo. That and being a perv.

slightly OT, but according to his blog, he just finished book 5.

I was certain that he'd miss the latest deadline, good for him to finish it. He better start the sixth tonight.

yep. great news; I almost posted it earlier myself. Seems "confirmed" by the publisher:

There were a few moments of George in a spare office yesterday, cleaning up the last bits and inserting a few new bits in longhand, while I typed the changes into the electronic files, but we are honestly and officially done.

And there is MUCH rejoicing!

(Video evidence to follow shortly.)"

Well there's supposed to be seven books. So two more, but then again it was originally supposed to be a trilogy. So who knows

And while I don't necessarily agree with Tycho on this point, it was hilarious:
Quote :
"This is why I’m excited for the show: now I can know what my friends are talking about, without having to read the books. I can watch Sean Bean being rad, again. The profound expense of converting these novels to video will act as a natural sieve, seizing the largest chunks of the excess. They can just show me a tender shank right there on the screen, or a table with a bunch of food on it. I don’t have to hear how a woman has beef juice running down her arm and onions in her hair or whatever other calcified smut that rancid old coot has clanking around in his braincase."

As the OP of the thread, I should probably post something now that the show's finally airing, lol.

Freaking loved the first two episodes, can't wait to see what the season brings! My reading list has quite the backlog at the moment, but I might have to start reading these books at some point.

Its good to look forward to Sunday nights again!

Yeah, this has been an awesome way to end the weekend; I'll be bummed after Episode 10. I've been using Sunday as one of my big study days for my PE, so I study most of the day up until this show and it's a big reward to shut the book, grab a beer/make a drink, and watch this.

the actress is right-handed but they did the training both ways. Her trainer commended her on the effort to learn it both ways and from what I understood the final takes were a mix of both. I honestly forgot to pay attention to which hand she was using during that part of it though.

PS: Tourney next week I guess...meaning the introduction of some awesome new characters.

Also, both Littlefinger and Varys were cast great I think. Both characters are very interesting in the book but I do wonder if they will really get the screen-time to be as interesting in the show (simply due to time I think their roles will probably be downplayed some. At least Varys).

I was kind of afraid some people would say that. That was a good episode for people who read the books (as you saw some cool characters 'in the flesh' for the first time) but I definitely thought it might feel a bit slow for newcomers.

Either way I think the 2nd half of this season is going to be > the 1st half knowing all the stuff that is going to happen. So as I said early on, if people stick with it through the first 4-5 episode I think they will be rewarded well.

Yeah, if you thought last episode was slow, this must have been sleep-inducing. I still enjoyed it (though admittedly less than the previous ones).

Except when Viserys was getting his ass handed to him. I could watch that for hours.

So due to the tornadoes in Alabama last Wednesday I went without power in my house until this morning. The news said it would be a few days without power, so the first thing I did the next day was go and pick up a copy of the first book in the series. I'm about a third of the way through and I am quite pleased with how closely the show has stuck to the series and am now very pleased to get some more back story. I, too, would like to see some flashbacks though, the way the king is described in his youth sounds awesome. Two questions though, for those who have read:

1) Does it explain later why Robert Baratheon is named king after the initial rebellion and not Ned or anyone else?

2) There is a very very minor part in the book that was left out in this episode (probably because it's kinda weird/would be cheesy on screen), but the commander of Night's Watch had a raven that was talking. It only said a few words like "Corn" and "Sit" but the book made a point of it that the raven was speaking. Is this explained later?

Blood relations I believe. Never made a big issue of it. Robert led the rebellion and claimed the throne by force. Any claim he had to the throne was accepted readily no matter how flimsy it was, because if it wasn't they would be smashed.

Not really spoilers, but if you want to be extra safe and haven't read the books, might want to skip this post:

1) I can't remember exactly, but I recall somebody very briefly mentions that they came up with some flimsy connection between the Baratheons and the Targaryens centuries ago that they used to claim Robert was the rightful heir and to place him on the throne. Most people were glad to have Aerys gone so they went along with it since Robert's a rad dude and he's more into partyin' and drinkin' than rapin' and murderin'.

2) It's just a bird. OR IS IT!?!?!?! But seriously, it's just repeating stuff people say. Sometimes it does serve to punctuate certain statements, however.

Also, can John Hawkes do a Britishy accent? I'd love to see him as Mance Rayder a couple of years down the road.

^ Also, to add to the answer to No. 1, according to the Wiki of Ice and Fire site, the Baratheon House was founded by Aegon's top general (and allegedly his bastard brother).

Beware on that site though. Definitely spoilers with no warning.

Read the books. I can't say that the show is too interesting.

It's just a replay of the books, and most of the time, I am underwhelmed by what I have seen so far. They also haven't really added anything to "punch up" what was in the books.

None of the actors are particularly strong except for the dwarf. And so far, the actors and actresses are playing the parts the way countless others have played the same fantasy roles.

There's no engaging portrayal such as Al Swearengen, any of a dozen Wire characters, Adama, Starbuck, etc.

To me, the show has just been about checking off plot milestones from the book. Doesn't really have a soul.
