Tyrion seems to be more charming in the show. In the book I would say that he is just pure blunt and that doesn't really translate to being a charming quality like it has on screen.

They really nailed the scene with Joffrey and Arya, as well as the scene with Robert judging their situation.

Speaking of Robert. I like him infinitely more on the screen than I do in the books.

Only casting choice I really have beef with is Mark Addy as the King. He doesn't really project a royal bearing. Also, my first exposure to him was on Still Standing, so I always half expect him to show up in sweatpants, drinking beer and trying to fuck Jamie Gertz.

I really like Robert's casting. I do agree that he doesn't seem very Kingly, but I think that's intentionally. The recurring theme in the book is that he doesn't really want the thrown like he thought he did. He is more comfortable being a well of lord type who can do whatever the fuck he wants. The line he said last night about he and Ned taking off down the king's road and finding some wenches to warm their beds at night is verbatim from the book.

well, Robert Baratheon isn't very kingly by nature.

he pretty much is a fat drunken slob at this point

but damn, you would not have fucked with him and his giant warhammer 15 years ago:

I didn't find it boring at all, but I did read the books.

Lesbian scenes, more fucking, dwarves cracking wise, dire wolves ripping people's throats out...man, I'd love to see what you find entertaining.

Didn't read the books.

Enjoyed it greatly. The part with the wolf ripping that guy to shreds was fucking badass. I also lolled when the dwarf get smacking the prince.

Yeah simonn, they totally should have gotten Michael Bay to direct this show.

Boring?

Was the Wire boring?

Was Rome boring?

Was the Sopranos boring?

This show has an excellent blend of action and character development.

regardless of whether or not you find it boring at present, it should pick up quite a bit in the next few episodes. there are a ton of characters and plot lines that need to be introduced before the show can really hit its full stride.

There actually won't be all that much action in this season, compared to seasons 2 and 3 when there will be a ton.

^I would say this season probably picks up a lot the last 5-6 episodes based on the book. A story of this scope just takes a little while for the stage to be set. There really isn't much "action" for most of the first book though. It's a plot driven story arc (lots of good dialogue, characterization, moving the plot and not action).

If you stick around, I promise it's worth it. Although, I didn't think this episode was boring in the least so I guess YMMV/different strokes. I'll just say that my wife and I have lent my worn-out paperback copy of GOT out to countless people(probably ~9 now) and every one of them has loved it and bought/read the rest of the series. Friends, parents, guys, girls, fantasy fans, non-fantasy fans.

I too would like to see some flashbacks though. There are a couple really awesome chances for flashbacks but I'm not sure that they are doing any :/

maybe that's my problem

going into it, i didn't know this was a fantasy series. i'm sure i'll lose interest around episode 3 or 4 when it starts getting over-the-top with the witches and warlocks and werewolves and goblins and magic and dungeons and dragons

Definitely not. It's really not super "fantasy" at all and I think it's better to not let that tag skew your opinion.

It is never close to over-the-top with fantasy elements as they are mainly sprinkled lightly throughout.

^^ had you read any of the previous pages, you'd know that this isn't really one of those types of fantasies

the term "fantasy" pretty much encompasses anything that isn't scifi, nonfiction, or fiction based on "real" world...it doesn't have to have witches and goblins and the like

off the top of my head, i can only think of 2 elements that would really be considered fantasy in the first season, both of which would come late, neither of which is crazy over the top.

Pretty sure those dragons are going to hatch next episode, so that will be a dose of fantasy.

Better than the first. The whole thing seems way rushed, though.

I guess it's hard to have the same perspective as people who haven't read the books because I understand the future implications of words and actions and know the characters more which obviously can make things a little more interesting. For example, seeing some of these great characters come to life on screen is exciting by itself which probably skews my enjoyment of the episodes.

4^ Similar to the quote from Full Metal Jacket:

How can you shoot innocent women and children like that?

It's easy. You don't lead them as much.

i thought the way Dany was staring at the eggs, and the mention in the first episode that they were as hard as stone, she was going to use one to bash Drago's skull in.

Still want to see more with the Direwolves (especially John Snow's...didn't even see it on the way to the wall)...but they did better than EP1 with showing the connections/mirrors to their Stark master.

That being said I love this show!

Peter Dinklage is awesome as Tyrion...he'll starting stealing this show soon. I agree he's not quite where he should be looks-wise as what he's described as in the books. I'm ok with that, I understand that if he were exactly portrayed I think alot of non-readers wouldn't be able to take the character seriously since it'd be hard to see past his deformities.

i think tyrion's portrayal in the show is interesting because you don't start to see the deeper side of him or his compassion in the books until much later

Ratings for the second episode showed no real drop which is always a very good thing. We'll see how the ratings pan out in the long run though. I'm pretty confident that we'll get 3 seasons, but where it goes from there is hard to say at this point. The numbers get hard to compare too with additional viewings + DVR viewings etc.

i could see this show picking up a lot of fans in the off season when people are able to string together 3,4,5 episodes in one sitting.

Same. Plus, international ratings have been very good as well (which isn't always the case for them) and I think this will be a TV show that does very well with DVD sales. I'm hoping those factors will keep it going even if it never becomes as big as something like True Blood here in the US.

I'm pretty ignorant of fantasy novels as a whole. When I first heard the ads for this show I assumed it was the Wheel of Time series because my cousin read those, had no idea Fire and Ice was a different series. So I came into this not knowing anything, watched it because it was on HBO and I tend to like fantasy movies.

Ep 1 was tough to get into because I didn't now the families etc. Read the HBO guide and got a bit of back story. Just finished the DVR or EP 2 and am now all in, can't wait to see what happens next. They are doing a great job of slow build, sub text and a bit of action. Cersei is hot, think I'll read the books.

[Edited on April 26, 2011 at 9:03 PM. Reason : Dany also is the hotness]
