Thanks, folks... I really appreciate the compliments.

Yes, I meant to get into the VO industry. Acting lessons, VO coaching, seminars, conferences, networking, marketing, etc. all went into me getting where I am today. It's been a great ride, so far... and I've got a long way to go.

^lol... completely forgot about that thread. See, I wasn't lying.

Thanks again, peeps!

And I have donated to HFH before... some old fixtures and stuff.

Smath74, just about anyone's voice is "VO worthy"... it's more about script interpretation and your performance (and mic technique, and acting, etc).

Having worked in the broadcasting business there are very few voices that have "it" and hypaone you have it mang.
I know how tough it is to get your foot in the door and you deserve kudos for all of the hard work you have done to
get where you are. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks a lot, KE4ZNR! That's really very nice of you to say. It has been a lot of hard work, and it still is, but I love it and I get to do my dream job for a living.

What kind of broadcasting work did you do?

I can't imagine it being difficult to move up the ladder with a portfolio such as yours.

Can you show us someone with a better (in your opinion) portfolio to compare by?

Genius: That's very nice of you, but I'm honestly in the lower-middle to middle range as far as portfolios go. There are HUNDREDS of people with much better VO resumes than me. Plenty of people are the voice of a network or two. That's huge. Or the narrator of a national TV show. Or the imaging voice of many network affiliates. Or the voice of a national/international brand (voice of Geico, etc). Or do movie trailers (which is the pinnacle of VO). I am none of the above... yet.

Kate: As I was saying above, a person's tone has nothing to do with whether or not they can be successful in VO. There are markets for just about every tone. Think your 12-year-old voice can't be used? Check this lady out... she does it for a living. http://hollyfranklin.com/

Apex: Oh noes! You're on to me!

Random, but I figured I'd put it here...

Just got an audition script that said, "...we need the talent to be very motivated, take-charge-type of teens between the ages of 18-24.

I've decided to make this thread about what I'm doing.. as well as answer any VO-related questions.

So... I have an ISDN session at 2 with 2 other voice actors, for a bank commercial. Also doing an audition to be a promo voice for the Lifetime network.

/blog entry?

can you explain a bit more how an isdn session usually works?

are you in your home studio during the session? where are the other actors?

^^ I've considered trying to get into that, but I don't think I have the stamina to be good at them. I may look into it in the future, though.

^Yes, I'm in my home studio, which is equipped with an ISDN line. Any studio, anywhere in the world, that also has an ISDN line can connect with me. I do all of my TBS and TNT promos from my home studio while on an ISDN connection with their studios in Atlanta. For this particular session, there are 2 or 3 other talent, all in different locations that are going to be connected with a main studio in another location. We will all have 2-way communication during the session. It's an old-ass, dilapidated technology, but it's still the industry standard. I hope that answers your question.

So I got a callback audition (2nd round) for this radio PSA through UNC. Very strange way of doing a voice-over audition... they wanted me to read the script live, while being filmed, at their location. Eh, whatever, I made it to the 2nd round, so that's a good thing.

Also, today I did a HUGE audition for a Toyota radio ad campaign. Wish me luck!

Sometimes, it's crazy having an LA agent and living on the east coast. Got three audition requests at about 9:30pm est, that had to be in by tomorrow. Oh well, if I book any of them... it would be well worth it.

I mean, what do you do when you aren't doing voice over work? Do you have a regular ass job? Or do you practice during your free time, like walk behind fat bitches at the mall in the food court, and narrate their decisions as they progress through the free samples?

LOL...

Voice-over is my job. I do a little audio production also, but VO is my bread and butter. When I'm not actually recording, I'm usually doing a lot of digital marketing and networking to build my client base. That, or attending networking events, training to improve my craft, or following up with past clients to try and re-kindle those relationships.

Or if I need a break... hit up the PS3. The joys of working from home.

So... update. I ended up booking the UNC PSA gig, I record this Friday. Also, I heard a commercial I recorded on the radio the other day and it really surprised me! I didn't expect this area to be in its broadcast scope. I was driving and noticed it... started yelling to my wife, "Oh snap, that's me... that's my commercial!" lol

You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but it never gets old.

Thanks! It's a commercial for a check-cashing place called Friendly Check. I think it's only airing on the "urban" stations though.

Also, I just found out I'm still in the running to be the next voice of Nick Jr. and a show on G4TV. Would. Be. Awesome.
