The biggest problem with this movie is that it was episode 7 and not 8 or 9 or 10 which essentially seals obi wan and recwnt yoda as failures. They cant go back and make a 6.5 so everything done to defeat the empire was a waste as it immediately rose back up as tge first order. Wpuldve been nice to see a movie where they dominated and the dark side rose out of nowhere to take over like episode 3.

Rotj happy ending was obliterated by this movie. The more i think about it. This movie was great because of its production and directing. It was beautifully shot actors were great transitions were great but the plot was complete mush. Waste of a movie in terms of plot. The last scene was rge the only thing remotely original, new or thought provoking.

[Edited on December 25, 2015 at 9:21 AM. Reason : Luke raising padowans losing kylo and going to exile shouldve been the plot]

[Edited on December 25, 2015 at 9:22 AM. Reason : Use episode 3 and leave 6 alone. ]

The three biggest things that people are forgetting when they're discussing the plot of the moves

1. The actors are much older, so you couldn't really just pretend to start out right after RotJ
2. If they had started out with no empire, Luke training young Jedi, etc, it would have felt like a rehash of 1,2,3
3. They had to do a lot of world building in this one, so they didn't have time for perfect plot points

TFA's only goal, in my opinion, was to set up the sequel and get you emotionally invested in the characters, which I think it did wonderfully.

^^ the end of RoTJ was not some immediate forming if the republic. They killed the emperor and defeated a very small portion of the imperial fleet. Before the EU was declared non canon it went very into detail about the decades of conflicts between the imperial remnants and the fledgling new republic.

The First Order is tiny compared to the Empire and is mostly out in the outer rim and unknown regions.

The Republic controls the majority of the galaxy.

The Rebel Alliance did not turn into the Resistance, the Rebel Alliance turned into the Republic. The Republic and First Order have been in a cold war, and the Resistance is a militia group funded under the table by the Republic. They are like the Mujaheddin for example.

Um, there is no end to conflict.

The names and places just change.

Why would you want the nice tidy ending of ROTJ to remain?

The anthology films have every right to go to the time between 6 and 7 and fill in anything they want.

This movie did a really good job inserting the audience into a functioning storyline. Many things have happened leading up to the events of 7 and the audience is just like dbfidbshdbdjdjcbc. They have so many movies to flesh it out. Netflix or HBO would be amazing for starting a series following a separate group of people on the galaxy.

The galactic map they have in the new picture book is pretty basic. Especially compared to GOT maps. I'm sure it will all fill in as they figure out what they want the Canon to be.

Lack of info frees up directors later for figuring out the best way to handle the story arc

saw it tonight and reading through this thread finally. I wanted to touch on WHO is Rey parent(s).

Quote :
"Rey is a clone of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Take that to the bank."

maybe. I think she is either some sort of daughter/granddaughter or clone of Obi-Wan. Hear me out.

-Jedis are chaste. Cant be lukes unless he broke the chaste thing. Obi-Wan probably broke the chaste thing or clone as stated.
-Obi Wan GAVE Luke his lightsaber. Obi Wan had that light saber for a very long time before Luke ever got it.

I've been hearing rumors about Rey being ObiWan's daughter, but that's not likely. Why would Obi-Wan, who has failed with Anakin as a male authority and blames himself for Vader's existence, ever have a relationship or risk having children? The age difference is also so far off that he would have needed ghost sex to conceive her. No way is Obi Wan a more likely father than Luke.

Jedis used to be born all the time to non-Jedis. How else could there have been so many of them if they weren't allowed to procreate? The concept the force "awakening" could mean more non-Skywalkers. People need to stop looking for the plot twist and be ok with new things.

but they made a thing in the movie. No parents, waiting for them to come back, clearly leaving the viewer to go "hmm who dis be".

Here is a copy paste of reasons from reddit, and i agree:

Quote :
"
We hear Obi-Wan call out to Rey during her forceback. Confirmed on Twitter today, Ewan McGregor's voice is who we heard calling out to Rey in that forceback.
She shares Obi-Wan's accent. I think this is a key; In the film, no one else on Jakku had this accent.
Like Obi-Wan, she lived a life of solitude on a barren desert planet.
She's intelligent and patient like Obi-Wan.
Daisy Ridley might have been cast specifically because she shares a similar profile to Ewan McGregor.
No one recognizes her because no one realizes who she is. The fact that she could be a Kenobi doesn't cross their mind because they wouldn't think it possible.
This is how she knows the force and is possibly stronger than Kylo Ren. Kenobi was able to defeat Vader after all.
This is why Kylo protected her in the forceback. He protected her out of respect for his grandfather's former friend. Remember, the killing of the Jedi in the forceback was when Rey was a very young girl. At this point, Kylo was only just starting to be tempted by Snoke. This is why Snoke's face only shows up for 1 single frame and it only shows up when you see Kylo Ren in the forceback. Kylo long had an obsession with his grandfather. He would then have known of the friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan and how Obi-Wan tried to help him and did train him.
She started training as a Jedi as a Padawan at a very young age. I still think Luke put her on Jakku to protect her because he recognized who she was, which is also why he started to train her. Luke knew she would be powerful and needed to protect and hide her. She doesn't remember her Jedi training because of how young she was left at Jakku. She was dropped off at such a young age in such a strange new world, at some point she had to leave all of that behind to survive.
She fights like Obi-Wan. Compare her lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren to the lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Vader in A New Hope. Her's is all defense and she moves her lightsaber just like Obi-Wan did with it extended out straight in front of her and moving it in a circular pattern.
The fact that Obi-Wan fathered a child could be considered something that you would want to be classified.
Her 2nd act of The Force is a Jedi mind trick. Obi-Wan used this frequently throughout the 4 movies he is in, more so than any one else.
Not only did Luke and Anakin have a history with that light saber, but so did Obi-Wan. He held on to it for approx. 30 18 years after all to give it to Luke.
When Maz says that the lightsaber belonged to Luke, and if Maz knew who she was, why not say that the lightsaber belonged to "your father"? Also, why does Rey refer to Luke as "Luke" and not "her father"? Because Luke isn't her father. To her, Luke is just "Luke".
Rey scales walls and sneaks around Starkiller just like Obi-Wan did on the Deathstar.
Lastly, The Star Wars Universe is to big to not have a Kenobi bloodline continue on. So far in the Star Wars Saga, the Kenobi bloodline is a much safer bet than the Skywalker one. Look at what's happened so far with the Skywalker bloodline. 2 of the 3 that are strong with The Force practically tried to destroy or conquer the galaxy and only 1 of them brought order but gave up when Kylo Ren destroyed his Jedi Temple.

Granddaughter would make more sense than daughter. Then it's the same generation of kylo and ray replacing anakin and obi wan. But several items in that list are innacurate or subjective.

This.

Quote :
"Like Obi-Wan, she lived a life of solitude on a barren desert planet."

Obi-Wan chose to live there to look after Luke while he was being raised by Uncle Owen. It's not like desert=home for the Kenobi family.

Quote :
"She's intelligent and patient like Obi-Wan."

So was Yoda, Mace Windu, and every Jedi ever except for Anakin and younger Luke.

Quote :
"This is why Snoke's face only shows up for 1 single frame and it only shows up when you see Kylo Ren in the forceback."

You can't assume the visions Rey had from touching the light saber are all the past. Yoda tells Luke in Ep.5 that the Force can help you see possible futures.

Quote :
"She fights like Obi-Wan. Compare her lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren to the lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Vader in A New Hope. Her's is all defense and she moves her lightsaber just like Obi-Wan did with it extended out straight in front of her and moving it in a circular pattern."

I've heard this a few times and I don't think it's accurate. She definitely attacks as much as she defends.

Quote :
"The Star Wars Universe is to big to not have a Kenobi bloodline continue on. So far in the Star Wars Saga, the Kenobi bloodline is a much safer bet than the Skywalker one."

Just because it could happen does not support evidence that it did happen. And how can anyone assume anything about the Kenobi line from knowing only one single Kenobi?

That article contradicts itself a few times and uses a lot of wishful thinking.

So, not to jump all on this narrative, but I definitely noticed this. It was done very obviously as to hint that she either picked up some of her teaching from Obi-Wan, or at least modeled them after him.

This would explain why Han made that shot without looking on maz kanada's planet. It was kylo helping.

The thing is the story is so loose you can do whatever you want. Including this possibility.

This movie is at least a fun thing to think about. So many possibilities. Will make the sequels equally anticipated.

I avoided this thread until I saw the movie tonight.. I just read all the other pages and agree with some things..

Questions, though:
What happened when Rey touched the lightsaber? Were all those flashbacks or flash forwards? For example, Luke's hand touching R2D2 was in that scene, the one from the trailer. I forgot what else they showed, but I don't remember it happening yet? One was Kylo killing somebody? I think.... Someone refresh my memory on what all it showed

And who was Snokes? Was he the holographic bad guy? Is he sitting somewhere alive or is that his ghost?

That was mostly a flashback. It showed Kylo with what is probably the rest of the Knights of Ren, right after they slaughtered the Jedi that Luke was training. It also showed her when she was being left on Jakku.

Nobody knows where Snokes came from.

My working theory on Snokes is that he's Darth Plagueis, Siduious' old master. We do know from Palpatine that Plagueis was obsessed with immortality through Force manipulation, and it's not a huge leap to believe that Palpatine didn't as thoroughly kill his old master as he thought. Severely weakened, he's spent the last generations regaining strength and has stepped up to fill the power vacuum left over from the fall of his old apprentice.

I've heard that theory too, but if that is the case, this galaxy keeps shrinking. There are too many connections to characters from the previous movies. And if Finn is Lando's son or grandson....that is going to strain credulity.

For the rey/Skywalker column, I interpreted r2 waking up as recognizing the Skywalker force signature, or something, when Rey landed. Leia obviously has some connection to her as well.

Yeah it was stated that Luke had started a new Jedi Academy of a sort before Kylo turned on him.

After the fall of his Academy Luke went on a quest for the first Jedi Temple(s), and that's what the map R2 and BB8 had pieces of.
