abu, smith, i dont know. Prob rowan or hendo. Rowan was cold early but actually got a block and got some close shots and free throws. Dorn was a littler too wild, anya played like anya so good but in spurts. Markell looked raw but had some flashes. Yurt looked smooth but not necessarily on the same page with everyone yet. Hicks didnt show much. Kirk had some nice dunks but still looks like just an athlete who plays ball.

I thought Rowan looked really good and he'll be dangerous playing the 4 against smaller teams. I also thought he defended well and I felt like he took this game seriously. Tons of potential all around though once these guys get settled in.

^^^^ Did Mav like steal your girlfriend or something?

Your hating on the guy like he is some 5 star prospect that was suppose to save our program and has totally fizzled out. Ridiculously critical of a guy who is simply working hard and who without we'd have been even worse last year. What were your expectations for him? Seems like he is exactly as advertised when we recruited... What you saw his highlight film in high school hitting 3s and thought he was going to come in as a freshman and score 30 a night? He is a pretty nice 4 year guy for our program, I don't get why you are acting like he deserves to be shit non-stop in a borderline obsessive way.

yeah, Mav's three point shot was obviously off last night (especially early), but he was 3-3 from inside the arc, 5-6 from the line, and added 5 rebounds, 2 steals, a block, and only 1 turnover in 22 minutes. It was one of the most well-rounded games he's played, IMO, and he showed he can contribute to the team even when his shot isn't falling. will that kind of defense/loose-ball awareness still exist when we're playing better teams? no idea, but I imagine he won't shoot 2-7 from 3 point range every night either.

I just don't think he's the third best player on the team.

I'd put Henderson and Yurtseven above him on that list along with Smith and Abu.

I don't hate Rowan, he's just overrated by you people.

Also, SHUT UP ActionPants. I bet Rowan ends up no better than third best 3 point shooter on the team again this year. 2/7 didn't surprise me a bit.

Like what are you talking about? Who is touting Rowan as the 3rd best player on the team? You are arguing with nobody. A few people have said he has gotten a bit bigger and we are all hoping that he can get his 3 percentage up a bit with some more legs under him and a year of experience. He was off last night with early 3s, wow first exhibition game and a guy missed shots early in the game...time to start flaming the message board.

He had 17 points and plays hard, seems to work hard, and will be a nice 4 year guy for us which we need. He has a unique skillset that is valuable with the lineups we can put out on the court. At the least he is enough of a threat that you have to respect his shot and that alone spreads the court some. You seem to be on a mission to make sure nobody thinks he is any good when all anybody actually thinks is he is an nice college player with a decent shot that can play a few positions on the court.

I think the point is we have a deep and talented team now. Maverick is a poor man's Scott Wood. He needs to be the sixth man and play 15-20 minutes when Yurtseven is cleared. He shot pretty poor percentages last year and will need to improve a lot.

We aren't hating on him, just discussing the team. He should be a "role player" not someone we run the offense around.

not really, except that he's white. Wood was obviously a better shooter, but Maverick does a lot of other things better.

Saying someone is awful(who isn't) isn't discussing the team. And no issue with talking about rotations and with more depth we can play various lineups and matchups based on opponent, that is obvious. My issue is with the random outrage against Rowan for no apparent reason. Like nobody is saying he is amazing, nobody is saying he should play 40 minutes a night, and nobody is saying the offense should run through him. A few people posted hoping he would improve. I think we all agree if he is the 6th man or 4th or 5th scoring option that is a good thing, it wasn't good last year that he was our second or third option.

Yeah last year I was fine with the Wood/Rowan comparisons, doesn't seem to fit as much anymore now that he's playing some stretch 4.

Rowan is a more athletic with 2 good knees version of Evtimov.

not at all. Wood could only jack up 3s. And was very very good at that one particular thing. Mav is not nearly as good a shooter, but is better inside the arc and a better rebounder. Mav is only similar in that he's asked to be our primary 3 PT shooter...but in terms of their game and skills, it's not really a great comparison.

Ralston Turner is a poor man's Scott Wood. Same game, Wood was just better at it than Mav. Mav is not solely a 3 PT shooter and has a little more to his game than Wood ever did. And, yes, I'd take Wood over Mav - I'm not arguing that Mav is better. only that it's really not a fair comparison to either player.

Maverick Rowan had possibly the worst defensive year that a Gottfried NCSU player has had.

These are facts. Sorry. His defensive rating was 114.9. That is atrocious. Wood/Turner were never that poor.

I interpreted the question to mean which 3 players played the best last night. Also the competition must be close bc to move him off the pedestal you named 2 players that haven't played a single ACC minute

Plus, as has been mentioned numerous times, he was a freshman that was not expected, nor was prepared to play 34 minutes a game. He wasn't expected to play that role his freshman year, but he was forced to due to injury. Maybe he improves his defense and becomes a better college player? It's very possible.

The whole game is on youtube btw.

The small-ball option was an offensive cluster fuck that reminded me of a poorly executed Princeton. But, to Lynn's credit, they did defend against it fairly well.

Things started flowing much better with both Anya and Abu on the court. Yurt7 also did really well for the time that he had.

Abu and DSJ are beasts, period. Anya actually seemed to be fairly improved despite the massive weight gain. Rowan and Yurt7 seemed extremely comfortable working with DSJ. Yeah, Rowan didn't have a great night behind the arc, but everything was coming to him easily, largely credit that to DSJ.

The big things that stuck out for me in terms of concerns were Dorn and Henderson. They just seemed to demand too much instead of letting the ball flow through Abu and DSJ.

So, I didn't have anything to do last night and ended up watching this twice all the way through.

Some arm-chair observations:

DSJ was on total cruise control. It really makes you wonder what this guy can do what he puts it into higher gear as he really didn't seem to be fighting for anything.

The pick and roll looks very very nice. There were even couple of times where Yurt7 was wide open and DSJ just didn't see it. This should be a major satple of our offense under Gott this year.

Yurt7 moves up and down the court as advertised, and seemed to have a nice and smooth stroke.
