I'm disappointed with the press coverage of Trump so far. Really disappointed. They want to put him in a bad light so bad, that they are getting sloppy about. And when they are sloppy, we get shit like that Spicer press conference that was an embarrassment for everybody involved. It was obvious Trump wrote that shit on a napkin, handed to him and told him to go say it.

There's plenty of material out there without making dumb shit up like the King bust thing. Fucking retarded.

By all means, report on the dumb stuff he's doing, and all the dumb stuff he's going to do. There will be an endless stream of it. But mind your p's and q's. Do some verification.

Not sure anyone made anything up. Didn't the one single reporter say he didn't see the thing sitting there, but it turns out that his view of the thing was obstructed, and he apologized? What more are you looking for here?

Given who Trump is and his complete contempt for the media, we're in for a wild fucking ride, whether you like it or not.

I wonder why Trump doesn't like the establishment media that lied, exaggerated and smeared him and is 100% in bed with the DNC. Gee, I wonder why Trump doesn't like them?

^^But synapse, we shouldn't allow members of the media to just say something they know will be somewhat sensational without verification, then just come by with a half-assed apology later. That would have been such an easy thing to verify.

Look, I'm sure they'll be able to dig up much worse, and I don't doubt one bit that it is out there.

This is the first im hearing about a king bust, but I don't watch tv news.

trumps inaugural speech was sad, his CIA speech was sad, and the things he's making spicer talk about are sad.

The fact is trump had a mediocre inaugural turnout, followed by unprecedented global protests of what he stands for. This means something. Trump can't claim he's for unity when he continues to try and gaslight about his weak public support.

because the something that they are doing in many, many cases is not actually useful or effective.

Maybe I'm wrong about this march, maybe it will increase voter turnout and reshape the midterms and make Trump a one term president, but it seems unlikely.

Activism is great, peacocking/virtue signaling/#slacktavism is a waste of time and should be ridiculed. It often serves as a fill in for doing something that does matter. Plenty of people will go away from this thinking, "I marched, I did my part." It's like putting a pink ribbon on your car antenna but not actually donating to cancer research.

Showing up in cities across the country, outnumbering the actual inauguration itself in DC is NOT #slacktivism.

Bullshitting on the internet is, though. Jesus, these people showed up. Millions of people are being politically motivated as a result. Give them some fucking credit, for fucks sake. This country has a long history of activism resulting in change. It also has a shameful history of voter suppression and disenfranchisement. Let them do this, and if you agree with them, then join the conversation instead of bitching about it on the sidelines

US is pulling out of TPP
https://www.google.com/amp/www.9news.com.au/amp/national/2017/01/21/18/25/trump-kills-off-tpp?client=safari

TPP was filled with too much corporatism and exporting anticompetitive copyright polices. But I'm not excited about the protectionist policies coming down the pipeline, especially if other counties are spurred into better trade parternships without us.

Was that a joke post? I mean I agree but I'm not sure if you were also being sarcastic about Trump's twitter account. They both need to go. Trump's relations with the media so far have been nothing but embarrassing.

I feel bad for Spicer having to read that schlock. But I'm sure he didn't have a choice. Trump was just like "hey you, go read this to the public."

It isn't "activism" in 2017. Its a bunch of misguided losers looking for attention and validation. They all carry signs with straw man arguments about nonexistent "oppression", all present complex issues as if it is good vs evil, and their bullshit leads to rioting and looting. Half of it is Soros-funded, the other half is just low-IQ group-think showing us how dangerous mob mentality really is.

Maybe you guys should fake some more "hate crimes" so you can keep bitching about fake oppression.

the problem isn't journalists (hate to use that term since true journalists are so rare these days) using twitter, it's people going to twitter and expecting to find good journalism in 140 character statements. can't blame the "journalists"; that's about all the average american attention span can handle.

^^ so you aren't a fan of journalists reporting in real time?

would you rather the stories wait hours before they're reported on/published?

also, individual journalists tweeting in real time isn't the same as a media outlet reporting in real time

that genie is waaaay out of the bottle

the democratization of information and the way information is now gathered wouldn't allow for it

the answer isn't to go back to a time in which information was gathered and reported on a certain way that was conducive to the time, it's to adapt to the modern time and evolve

there is always great writing and reporting, regardless of the era. the only difference is that there is now way more to sort through to find it.

Having a daily newspaper doesn't allow enough time for reporting, a weekly paper is all that is needed.

There's a difference between using the digital information age to share info in (nearly) real-time, versus some "journalist" tweeting something plausible but speculative, simply because their supervisor persuades them to get the scoop and report it before the other media outlets for ratings.

Twitter is cool and all, but anyone who relies on twitter for all their news, simply for the convenience of the speed, is foolish as hell.

Media, and the way some people choose to consume it, are problematic, but freedom of the press is fundamental to democracy. It's literally the first thing those white dudes wrote down when they were tryna prevent eventual tyranny.

So it's really, really, really disturbing when you casually assert that journalists should be restricted from using Twitter. It's fucking bonkers, crazy town, full-blown idiocy.

Surely, you can see why people are terrified...?

I would add that it's dangerous to conflate out and out "fake news" with journalistic bias.

What FNC and MSNBC do isn't to make up fake stories. It is choosing what to report in a manner which caters to your audience.

The idea that every story from the media is false is absolutely a way to delegitimize any real criticism or investigation of a given situation.

Instead of hot takes I will say that while I do believe globalization is coming and will be a net positive I am glad he stopped the TPP in its current form.

Until he does something stupid like slaps ridiculous tariffs on imports are started a trade war with China I can't condemn him for it.

To me, twitter isn't a legitimate source of information to begin with, so in my mind, I'm not advocating revoking anything from the press that has to do with actual reporting. But in that same vein, I don't think Trump should have access to it either.

Now because of Twitter, instead of real press conferences where the WH speaks to the various news outlets, we're going to get shit like Spicer spouted this weekend, and the "real" updates from the WH are going to come in 140 character increments.

I said before that I feel bad for Spicer, and now I'm seeing calls for his resignation over these "alternative facts" that he spoke about, and if I were him personally, I would resign. He shouldn't be required to go to the public and lie.

The Trump WH is going to go through press secretaries like Trump goes through fake tanning spray.

^^Well, for starters, the one about the crowds at inauguration.

dtownral, you tell me, what was the point of that journalist tweeting the bit of info regarding not seeing MLK's bust. Do you think that he was acting with journalistic integrity there?

I just hate social media, and I think it is a horrible outlet for news. But twitter is the worst. You can't get news across in 140 characters. You just can't.
