I mean it's not entirely crazy considering the amount of work nascar has put in to make their cars safer for the drivers. Pre-COT that drivers side impact at speed after already slamming the wall is a likely death sentence.

I get that technology is way better now, but that tech is built for the first full speed head on impact with the wall (a la Dale Sr.). Newman did that, then flipped and had another car hit him on the driver side roof at full speed. He's lucky to be alive, let alone walking out of the hospital two days later.

Another important thing to remember is that cars are designed to let the driver survive 1 collision. After that, it's already deformed and there's only so much shock it can help with absorbing

i mostly like the cars this year, but i liked last year's Haas livery better (i know the red white and black are the traditional colors and the black/gold was because of rich energy)

Do or die year I feel for Haas. Last year was a pretty miserable year for them and they somehow decided to stick with Grosjean and Magnussen. They might be the only team on the grid that thinks Grosjean is F1-worthy at this point. This is the same team and Team Principal in Guenther Steiner though that once chose to splash into F1 as "the American team" and believed Esteban Gutierrez was a superior driver to choose to drive for them than Alexander Rossi, so driver selection is not their strong point.

The 2020 driver lineups are pretty depressing up and down the grid as the only changes were Kubica ousted for Big Canadian Money at Williams - so a new dead last in the field - and Hulkenberg was unceremoniously replaced by Esteban Ocon at Renault who returns to the grid after a 1-year absence as Mercedes test driver. All other 18 drivers in the field stayed put, as everyone seems to be waiting for the new cars and rules changes of 2021. Throw in Mercedes has some new linked suspension to remove drag down the straights, and this year like last year might have the title race done after race 4. If you want drama, cheer for Bottas.

Vegas cup race was setting up for an awesome finish with the 88 on pace to catch the 12 on the last lap, but NASCAR robbed us with an unnecessary caution for the 6, who spun by himself, didn't hit shit, and was nowhere close to sliding back across the track.

^^^ kubica probably needed to go, he was being outperformed by russell on a regular basis. he's supposed to be good at feedback so i imagine he'll stick around as a test or simulator driver for awhile and probably have a good dtm career

i have no idea how grosjean kept is seat, haas probably should have replaced both drivers

Fontana was Fontana.

MotoGP's season opener in Qatar was canceled due to the Qatar government's travel restrictions on people from Italy and Japan of anyone coming from those places had to be in 14-day quarantine due to coronavirus. Since MotoGP has a ton of personnel on and off the track from Italy and Japan, they chose to cancel the race.

I wonder what F1 is going to do if things continue like they are. The Chinese GP has already been postponed with no makeup date announced.

And now the 2nd MotoGP round in Thailand has been cancelled. Where the first round in Qatar was canceled by MotoGP's organizer Dorna in reaction to Qatar government policies on people travelling from Italy and Japan, the Thai government cancelled their MotoGP race.

The 5 lugnuts thing is from a racing context stupid. It doesn't add anything to the event and the fiasco a couple years ago of teams intentionally only tightening 3 of the 5 lugs demonstrated those teams were willing to compromise safety of their driver and others in exchange for a quarter of a second on pit road.

5 lug wheels are essential to stock car racing, imo.

You know what's essential to stock car racing? STOCK CARS! We've not had those at all this century. So we have racing based on cars when neither Ford or Chevy really manufactures cars anymore, but a single lug on a tire instead of 5, that's one step too far!

^the issue could be if they slow down the fuel flow enough to where having athletic tire changers wont matter, teams could then have the actual mechanics pit the cars and lay off the athletes.

i dont think that will happen next year but single lugs a step in that direction

And the 2021 Busch Clash will be run on the Daytona Road Course. I really wish NASCAR would quit making these drastic changes and go back to being more traditional. We already have enough road racing motor sports circuits.

Is 750 miles of racing at Daytona not enough? Lol...id much rather watch them negotiate the road course than run single file for 50 laps and take an hour to run the last 10 as they wad up millions and millions of dollars of cars in a sport already struggling with money

^ Trans-Am has always been a series I thought would work well if it was just promoted by an entity more professional than the SCCA. The SCCA make USAC look well-ran in comparison.

I don't get the change to the Clash though. I hate the racing at Daytona, but people have no interest in Daytona unless it's on the oval, remove that from it it might as well be Pocono. And throw in it's not even a real race, the Clash has been made even more skippable.

Ditto St. Petersburg Indycar race (running behind closed doors/condensed schedule.

The Australian GP is not taking place. McLaren withdrew from the weekend after a team member was confirmed with coronavirus. Race was reportedly cancelled although the FIA have made no official announcement. Meanwhile local organizers and government are saying the race will take place behind closed doors. I wonder if like most things in F1 there's financial aspects in play: the FIA want Australia to say the race is cancelled so they don't have to pay back the sanctioning fee. Vettel and Raikkonen have arrived and gone back home.

12 Hours of Sebring has been postponed until November.

it's not the teams so much as the crowds of fans that are the big problem.

Also nascar is a bunch of idiots, what did you expect?

Same was true for F1, Indycar, Supercross. Situation drastically changed in the course of 24 hours.

F1 decision to cancel the Australian GP was only a 4-3 vote of the teams, and 1 of the 4 Mercedes only changed their vote to yes after a phone call to Mercedes corporate.

I wonder about the financial repercussions of this. Auto racing is hardly financially well healthy at the best of times. I think this might drive some team closures. NASCAR and F1 are clearly hoping they can make these races good later in the year. Not an option for Supercross or Indycar (Barber or COTA could be, not an option for St. Pete or Long Beach). Indycar wiped out almost a fourth of its schedule.

Ferrari F1 have suspended operations until March 27th.
Barber IndyCar are offering fans full refunds. St. Petersburg in contrast are offering deferments (you can choose to have it buy a ticket for the 2021 race.) Sebring are doing the same thing. Long Beach has not made a decision yet.

As far as NASCAR, from Bob Pockrass' Twitter::

Quote :
"Bob honest question here what exactly are they looking for or what has to happen to back to racing or just sports in general"

Quote :
"NASCAR has not made an executive available to explain. IndyCar did & indicated motorsports competitors less at risk b/c less contact with others when competing compared to other sports. Canceled b/c society has no desire for mass gatherings. My guess: will race if local govt OKs."

Then says we won't know about Texas or Bristol until this week but both states are under government orders banning mass gatherings, although it doesn't extend intk the future on those days.

nascar has stated they plan to return to racing at Martinsville in May. They've also said they are working as hard as they can to figure out some way to still run every race this season at every track. I could envision some doubleheader weekends like they plan to do at pocono. Just go ahead and run both races at the track in one weekend.
