Redneck Jesus himself, Dale Earnhardt Jr., spoke out against it years ago. You don't see them nearly as much as you used to at races.

He's a nobody who should've been banned from events a long time ago. He is in the way every week until he wrecks himself.

Yes. He's a 50 year old dude driving a truck sponsored by his own business because he's so shitty no one else would sponsor him. Also he hasn't raced a single nascar-sanctioned lap this year. He's just a rich dude who was pretending to be a race car driver.

Bubba is a legit driver. He's a mid-pack guy who occasionally makes it up in the top 10. He won races at the lower levels. He is probably being held back a little by his current equipment/budget.

You just described how 21st-century auto racing works including the entire European formula ladder system.

^ Of the 30 or so real cars in a race, he's what, 25th or thereabouts?

It's hard to determine how good he is because his current ride is nothing. At the same time, compare him driving for RPM to what DiBenedetto did driving for Leavine last year. For being in similar-level rides Dibenedetto showed a lot more as far as flashes of brilliance. I'm sure Bubba will have a ride as long as he wants, his results will determine if it's RPM-level rides forever or he can move up the field.

yeah, definitely in the bottom third of those ~30 cars with his current equipment

with the penske alliance ride, diburrito is now consistently in the top 15 and spends a good bit of time in the top 10

the guy is about as real a race car driver as tom cruise. he ran 18 truck races in 3 years, including a whole mess of start-and-parks. he's just a rich dude at fantasy camp.

^^ Paul Newman at 76 years old was a real race car driver in the 24 Hours of Daytona. All that's required to be a race car driver is to bring a check.

^ That's not a requirement and hasn't been ever since we've banished you have to qualify in order to make the field and bringing a check to field the car became more important than being good.

Frankly guys that field their own cars I'm more in favor of than guys that just straight up ride buy because the former adds to the car count.

Let's go back to my Unofficial Rules of Auto Racing:

Quote :
"1. Auto racing is not, nor has it even been, a “fair” sport.
4. The sport revolves around money (for a candy-coated version of this truth, see the film Speed Racer). But auto racing commentators are barred from acknowledging this when discussing why certain drivers lacking talent are in the field or why a Formula One race is taking place in Azerbaijan.
8. Talent requirements do not exist at all if the driver provides funding for the car, the crew, the travel, the owner’s wife and girlfriend(s), etc.
12. The top two-thirds of the [Formula One] grid are seriously good drivers. The back one-third of the grid are random ride buyers not much more talented than the guys they raced against back in Formula 3.
16. Americans are ineligible to participate in Formula One, unless the American can satisfy Rule 8.
36. The best thing that ever happened to NASCAR was the rise of Jeff Gordon. He opened the sport up to new fans, new sponsors, and the series got larger than ever before venturing into new markets previously indifferent to stock car racing.
37. The worst thing that ever happened to American auto racing was the rise of Jeff Gordon. He opened NASCAR up to guys getting rides in the big series simply because they were young and good looking, talent be damned (hi Casey Atwood), and suddenly the grassroots became filled with daddies spending fortunes so young Ricky Bobby could be the next Gordon and get a Cup ride at 20 years old, forcing everyone to spend to simply keep up and completely changing the grassroots, removing a lot of pathways for blue-collar racers to simply race, making the sport even more about money than it was before (see Rules 3 and 4).
59. If you are watching a sportscar race and sit wondering how the car owner possibly got all the money to fund his car(s), chances are he is funding the race team through criminal means.
64. Privateers are the lifeblood of [sportscar racing]. If they disappear, so will the sportscar series a few years after the manufacturers inevitably pull out (see Rule 9, almost every FIA-sanctioned sportscar series ever, IMSA GTP, American Le Mans Series, the current ACO LMP1 class).
65. Following on from Rule 64, gentleman drivers, frowned upon elsewhere, are welcomed with open arms as the only way to pay the bills for a non-factory effort, and can lean on their co-driver to even win overall races here (see Milka Duno's career)."

^^ I'll be surprised if it stays at Bristol going into the future but there's really no argument for it to still be at Charlotte at this point beyond inertia and all the teams are based there.

Went to the closing night of Indiana Midget Week last night in Kokomo, Indiana. Social distancing signs were displayed but were clearly not being followed.

It's normally they race at 7 tracks around Indiana in 7 nights. Due to Covid, that became 6 races at 5 tracks this year.

Track is a dirt quarter mile and we got some sprinkles early in the evening that lasted about a half hour. However, dirt tracks need a little water anyway so we kept racing.

Great racing. It's amazing how good you have to be to compete in a USAC national series. 37 or 38 entries, no one was complete junk or made a complete idiot of themselves. Even the guy that finished last in the semi-main was not a joke. He was right on the tail of the field in front of him. They also had a sprint car race which was not national (but had a lot of national guys in it because they haven't been racing for awhile and need to make some money) but was likewise incredibly solid.

Kyle Larson has been destroying the Midwest short-track circuit after he got fired in NASCAR. He won Indiana Midget Week before the main started and for the week went 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd. Someone there last night publicly offered a $1,000 bounty on whoever could beat Larson. I think he won the week prior a couple World of Outlaws features with the car there he owns. Caution came out with about 3 laps to go due to one midget hitting one of the infield marker tires and knocking it on the track. Chris Windom takes the restart with Larson in 2nd or 3rd. Windom got boondoggled somehow as both Larson and Tanner Thorson got him. Thorson was low on the last lap in the lead and Larson was high (of course). Going into turn 3 it looked like either driver could win, but Thorson nipped him at the line with Windom right there.

^^I don't think Bubba had anything to do with this.

I do however think its no small coincidence that Nascar enjoying new demographics watching the sport would do anything to keep a bigger more diverse potential fanbase and what better way to do that than have symbol of racial oppression appear in the only black series drivers garage.

Either way Nascar needs this investigation to wrap up quickly as the longer it drags out the more people will question this story.

^ well duh, he's not dumb like Jussie Smollett was

No fans are in the infield at the moment, so that leaves team personnel, track personnel, NASCAR personnel, and Fox and MRN staff. I imagine there are a lot of cameras in the infield and it should be easy to find out who did this.

Yet we are 2 days past the incident and nothing, no photos of the noose and no reports of a suspect. In today's day and age I find that highly suspect.

there is zero chance this was a stunt of some sort. it would blow up in their faces so hard.

it must be more than one individual and they must be trying to find out as much as they can before releasing the info. Also don't want to release it during the race to take away from the 500. I'd expect something today or tomorrow. But yeah, it needs to happen soon.

LMAO Nascar looks like a bunch of morons now. Feel sorry for Bubba Wallace, who will unfairly face the brunt of the backlash from this. That was literally a loop tied in the end of the rope to pull down the garage door.

What a weird outcome. Definitely a noose. But also definitely not malicious or intentional.

And I’m not discrediting any of it...that seems to be a legit explanation, especially based on ^.

In the end it probably wasn't meant to be hatefully, but NASCAR saw an opportunity to parade their black driver around and show how they aren't racist, so they took advantage of it.

Nah, I don’t think that’s it. Maybe I’m a total sucker for buying what they say happened. But it sounds like somebody saw what looked like a noose, they reported it...and it escalated quickly from there. Maybe I’m the sucker for believing it. But it seems reasonable enough to me that the reaction (to investigate and for drivers to rally around Bubba) was both appropriate and not a case of of nascar jumping at the opportunity to “show off” Bubba Wallace

I can tie a noose (and several other knots, I was a Boy Scout after all) and it would never be my choice knot for a garage door. I don’t know what to think at this point. Show some love to Bubba Wallace though, he didn’t ask for any of this
