He’s either totally unhappy here and just wants to leave or he’s getting some real bad advice.

if Doeren stays, he's gone when transfer portal opens up. Something is amiss and they'll wordsmith their way out of this but something not right.

^^^mj hurt his ribs against Miami. Even more reason to redshirt.
^ unfortunately Dave isn’t going anywhere.

^ sure it’s his plan to redshirt. But that doesn’t really mean the position is there waiting for him in 2024.

If it’s an injury (and he def took a beating vs Miami) then the optics of all of it would be better if they said he’s sitting out the rest of the year due to injury. That’s not what’s getting said. I’m for player empowerment but the staff can’t really allow a mediocre QB to hold them hostage either.

I don't think he's holding anyone hostage. Even if Morris comes back they are likely bringing in a portal QB. If he doesn't, it wouldn't surprise me to see them take multiple. Our QB depth is atrocious: next year we'll have a true freshman who is skinny like true freshman Mike Glennon/Daniel Evans skinny and a redshirt freshman who had ZERO other offers and is like 5'10. That's it.

Yeah...seems like he's gotta be gone -- if it was some mutually beneficial plan, you'd think it would have been announced as part of a larger change by Doeren. But Doeren was talking like dude was still the starter just yesterday. I don't imagine the coaches are lovin' it.

And we're going to have two QBs who were just as highly regarded or better coming out of HS on the roster next year. If they're not high on what they've seen so far from Lex Thomas in practice, I imagine they'll go after another 1 year QB from the portal and wish Morris the best of luck.

Oh? who are they? Because it sure as shit ain't Thomas and also not Bailey. Morris had a ton of offers from top programs including basically the entire SEC, FSU, Michigan and Oregon. Bailey had a couple other P5 offers from middling programs like us. Thomas had no other offers at all. They are both lower ranked than Morris (Thomas by A LOT)

Just look at Morris’ liked tweets on Muskland…I wouldn’t be surprised if his bags are packed by the end of the week. There’s no way he shows up to C-F for the cheats game.

I'm just going by ESPN rankings my dude. MJ Morris was the #19 dual-threat QB in his class. Lex Thomas was #13 last year. And Bailey is the #19 pocket passer/prostyle/whatever QB for this year. Looking at Rivals, I guess they were quite higher on Morris than ESPN was. But Rivals has given Bailey the same numerical rating and stars as they gave Morris so let's call it a wash. The larger point is that Morris hasn't really shown a lot, and there are kids on the roster who are in the same ballpark talent wise.

^^ESPN has notoriously awful recruiting rankings. I will give you that Bailey is "similarly" (albeit lower in all aspects) ranked to Morris, but Thomas is not by any stretch of the imagination. He's a kid who got a scholarship because of his brothers. If he was actually the 13th ranked QB or whatever, literally any other D1 school would have offered him a scholarship. You can tell a whole hell of a lot from offer lists. They tell me that Thomas is not a serious football recruit and that Morris was much more highly regarded than Bailey.

Maybe “holding the staff hostage” was not the best phrase. But telling your coaches mid season that you’re just not gonna play anymore this year is a super bold choice. And I agree we’re gonna need to portal QB(s) this off-season.

Maybe a better phrase would’ve been “a mediocre QB can’t/shouldn’t be able to call the shots on when he does and doesn’t play and an attempt to do so should result in a mutual parting”. My point is, I just don’t see how he comes back to the team next year even if he wants to. I can’t imagine the staff going along with his plan. He’s not good enough to call the shot like this. If the staff was on board with it they’d come out with some kind of comment about letting him heal up and get healthy by redshirting the remainder the year.

He's looked horrible this year, does it really matter? Or has he looked horrible because our O-line is nonexistent?

He's an established quarterback that has shown an ability to at least not totally throw away games with very little support and he's only a sophomore (rs freshman??). If nothing else he is an option, those others qbs could be a diamond in the rough, or they could be total zeros. And I think we know what Armstrong is at this point. And I bet coaches will look to portal regardless.

While the offense has looked better with Morris in than it did with Armstrong, I don't think it was entirely Armstrong's fault that we looked bad early -- irrespective of MJ, the offense is in a better (albeit, still bad) place now. Our o-line has improved a bit since he was starter, so maybe he's better about bailing prematurely, but we'll see. And I don't think KC had stood out the same way while Armstrong was in.

It's a big "if," but if Armstrong can show less hesitation on passes and bails less immediately, coupled with his better running ability, I don't think our offense takes a major blow. Probably just copium, but there's an argument to be made.

For this year, if mj and ba are close to equal, mj is the one that needs to play to develop. Maybe a football expert will say playing in this setup it's bad for development, but we're not Georgia, we're not going to magically have an excellent Oline and RBs next year, our qbs probably need to be able to handle adversity.

And for next year, BA is gone.

My answer was attempting to address tke question why we care that mj morris is gone, or both this year but moreso next.

Which basically amounts to what Justin has said: it can always be worse!!

DD:

Quote :
""As the season unfolded and we struggled offensively, I felt it was time to reassess that plan. That's part of my job. The team needed a spark. I met with MJ, coach [Kurt] Roper and I, and asked him if he wanted to play because I thought he could help our offense and our team. He agreed. We pushed forward with that plan in place of him playing.

"As games progressed and time went on, MJ came to me and let me know that he was still thinking about preserving his redshirt. I was surprised by that because he was our starter. Really didn't expect that, for a starting player to want to sit back down. He said he wasn't sure which way to go, but he wanted me to know that that was something that he was thinking about and talking with his family about. After the fourth game, he was very decisive in telling me it was important to him and his family to preserve his redshirt. We're honoring that decision."

"With that, Brennan is our starter. Our team has embraced him in this role," Doeren said. "We've rallied around him. Super excited to see what he does in this opportunity. With his finish. He's handled this, as Aydan said yesterday, 'like a grown-ass man.' Couldn't have been said any better.

"A guy with his story -- adventure, I guess you'd say, journey through college football. What he did at Virginia and then what he suffered there. Then when he came in, the good and the bad. The way he handled everything. Excited for him, very excited. As always, I ask -- there's a lot of opinions, there's a lot of storylines, there's a lot of hate -- be a good person. Cheer on these guys that are playing. Get behind them. Be excited. This team has a lot to play for.

"MJ was on our scout team this week. He gave us a great look. Brennan has prepared. The guys are playing hard for him. He's earned a ton of respect in our program. It's his team now. We're excited to see him finish the season. Like everything, it's an opportunity. I look at all of these moments for me as a leader. Adversity brings out the best. You can you can fight or you can run. I love to fight and so does Brennan. This team has proven that they are fighters. We get a really incredible opportunity for two weeks in a row now to go on the road and play someone else's senior day.""

I can only imagine the MJ and his family have assured DD that he is staying at least one more year, they are probably lying but DD is taking them at their word. The only thing I can think is this is a ploy to get more NIL money, we are bowl eligible and if we lose out with Armstrong he can say he gives us the best opportunity to win so pay me my money.

Has the line moved much since the news of MJ sitting out, we are still favored, currently its at -2 to -2.5 depending on site? I mean we have only won 2 times in WS since 2000.

You seriously think the staff believes that? It’s all PR bs (on both sides)…MJ knows he’s gone and they know he’s gone. He was already thinking about transferring in the spring/summer but we convinced him to $tay. You don’t get handed the starting job, ride a win streak to get bowl eligible (which was more our defense than anything MJ related), then just quit and say “aight good luck, see you guys next year”. Is that the kind of dude we want to lead our team moving forward anyway? He got his RS and ’highlight reel’, now he gets to shop around again in the portal because he wittle feelings got hurt

Line hasn’t moved. Morris isn’t good enough to move the line (and Armstrong is at least proven, not like he’s an unknown). Swapping him for Armstrong is just a wash for power rating purposes.

^^ yep
