Verizon announces "game changing" partnership http://www.pcworld.com/article/173184/google_and_verizon_team_up_for_android_phones.html
Supposed to be a slew of devices launched before the holidays, and substantial support and investment after that.

I was wondering where the thread on this was, although there really should be a mention of Verizon/Motorola in the thread title.

The droid is one ugly and dull phone. Hopefully eclair makes up for it and it needs a touch pro 2-esque keyboard. Hopefully they change it since they mentioned that they're still open on the keyboard design. I'm waiting to see the new VZ HTC android that's coming. Don't think that one will end up with android 2.0 though

most of the things mentioned in the app are a strain on battery life...hence why you would need to swap out batteries unless you leave your phone plugged in all day.
Quote : | "Verizon's desire to sell apps through its VCast store by default, instead of through handset makers' online stores, may have contributed to Verizon's decision to scrap its rumored Palm Pre rollout, and pretty much guarantees that the iPhone will never find a home on Verizon.
Unlike Apple or Palm, however, Google has not been interested in making profits from Android Marketplace sales. Third-party developers receive seventy percent of any sales revenue from their apps in the Marketplace (just like they do from Apple's App Store,) with the remaining thirty percent going to Google. But Google doesn't pocket its Marketplace revenue, using the money to cover "carriers and billing settlement fees" instead.
With no profit motive, Google is likely uninterested in how Android phones on Verizon get their apps. Besides, if you really want to buy from the Android Marketplace, Verizon won't be able to stop you from accessing the Android Marketplace Website on your device." |
Another reason NOT to switch to verizon. They may have the better network coverage (although dated) but wow...vcast? really? lol

As of 2 days ago, the Palm Pre IS coming to Verizon... http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/17/verizon-tweet-palm-pre-early-next-year/
Verizon has THE best coverage hands down. I hate the VCrapware, but honestly it's not a deal breaker. I'd rather be able to USE my phone, than to bicker about how I get my apps.
and about the battery life, the nvidia tegra has shown you can run more with less power and maintain great battery life, so your points are moot about being able to do more you wouldn't "need" interchangeable batteries.... and better night shots, keyboard, and open development have nothing to do with battery life

Oh great, another thread for gloveco to take personal offense and get all butthurt towards anyone that suggests that another company besides Apple can make a decent product. This should be fun to watch.
Personally, I don't know why anyone wouldn't want someone to come out with a phone that actually betters the iPhone. Competition should be good for everyone, right?
Unfortunately, if you're going to go after the iPhone so hard, and talk about all the things your phone can do that the iPhone can't, then you have to, at the very least match it feature for feature everywhere else. I'd be amazed if anyone really could do that. Almost everything that this ad campaign mentions, with the exception of the keyboard (which I still think is +1 to the iPhone) and the battery could be fixed with software if it actually turns out that the Android phones make a big enough stir. Hell, most of those iDon'ts actually can be done on a jailbroken iPhone right now.
Unfortunately, I see this as another Zune HD type situation. They have a couple of bullet points on why they're "better" than the iDevice, and fall short in many other places leaving you not with an actually iDevice killer, but simply an alternative for people who don't want an iDevice JUST because it's an Apple. 10/19/2009 4:02:21 PM |

Considering how craptacular the first Storm is, I can see Verizon selling a lot of these droid phones, and to stop some of the hemorrhaging of users to ATT for the iPhone. Assuming the phone lives up to its hype. The Palm Pre is likely a better device, and it's still floundering.
But, if Apple ever decided to make an iPhone for Verizon, it'll kill the Droid pretty quick, I think. 10/19/2009 5:21:56 PM |

That's a limitation of the iPhone's platform, not of mobile platforms in general.
The Palm Pre, Windows Mobile, and Android devices all support background processes, and none have significantly shorter battery life than the iPhone. Just an FYI there, dawg.10/19/2009 10:43:02 PM |

The Droid might be the last straw for me.... I've sat by and waited patiently for over 2+ years, with a 3.5-year old phone, hoping against hope that the iPhone was coming to Verizon. With the latest shots aimed directed at iPhone, I can't imagine Apple is cozying up to them right now with an imminent release. I'm not going to switch to AT&T, so as long as I'm staying with Verizon, and as long as they don't have the iPhone, I might as well have a nice phone.... 10/19/2009 11:36:06 PM |

^It's got a mediocre screen, a mediocre processor and run of the mill components.
The background apps problem is because of a processor not designed for it, running on a software platform that is a hackjob for mobile (relatively speaking. It's a great OS, just not very well optimized for running on a low power, battery operated device). 10/20/2009 2:00:41 AM |

the iPhone is cutting edge as an ecosystem, the hardware is hardly cutting edge.
It's got a pretty weak antenna, a piss poor camera ccd (3gs is improved, but nothing close to the quality in Sony and samsung phones), a very cheap accelerometer, a slow and old CPU architecture, a mediocre screen both in resolution and refresh, what else do you want to know?
I don't want to derail the thread, if you want to know more about it feel free to pm me or start a new thread, because this is a huge tangent from your assertion that background processes aren't feasible simply because on platform can't do it. 10/20/2009 2:23:23 PM |
