Supposed to be announced Friday.

None of the 3 finalist have been announced. I wish we could know.

The tower will turn red when the new chancellor is installed, though.

I'm not expressing an opinion either way, but why Fowler, Stafford, and Cousins? I don't really know much about them.

So much for transparency in the wake of scandal. I guess we can expect more of the same bullshit from the university administration as usual.

I don't know much about this guy, or the other candidates that were available. But when I came across Purdue's student newspaper, it looks like every other article that mentions him has him talking about the need for increased diversity.

http://www.purdueexponent.org/?module=article&story_id=10443

Quote :
"Randy Woodson

Dean of the College of Agriculture at Purdue University

Prior to being named dean of Purdue Agriculture in 2004, Woodson served as associate dean of agriculture and director of the Office of Agriculture Research Programs.

As dean, Woodson implemented significant advancements with faculty, learning, discovery, engagement, diversity and development in the College of Agriculture. Woodson expanded the total faculty and increased the number of women faculty members and ethnic minority faculty members. The college has provided better access to Purdue College of Agriculture education through Ivy Tech and Vincennes University. The college created the Office of Multicultural Programs and launched a multicultural awareness course. The College of Agriculture also exceeded its goal for the campaign for Purdue, securing $150 million for faculty, students, programs and facilities. "

http://www.purdueexponent.org/?module=article&story_id=14096

Quote :
"Carolyn Johnson will take on the responsibilities of interim chief diversity officer.

Johnson, director of Purdue's Diversity Resource office, will assume the position immediately. The position is new and Johnson will report to Randy Woodson, Purdue provost.

Woodson said the new position will serve as a focal point for the University's efforts to foster an environment of inclusiveness.

"Carolyn will be working to bring together all aspects of Purdue's diversity efforts and ensure activities are coordinated across the campus," Woodson said. "Meanwhile, Purdue launched a national search to find the most qualified candidates for our vice provost for diversity and chief diversity officer.""

http://www.purdueexponent.org/?module=article&story_id=10503

Quote :
"Woodson's presentation focused mainly on student access and success, diversity and faculty quality of life. After his presentation, the audience was allowed to ask questions and many were focused around the students. Marcy Towns, a professor in the department of chemistry wanted to know how Woodson would change gateway courses like her Chemistry 115 class.

Woodson explained there is a big difference in the nurturing that students receive in those classes and the challenges that students need from the classes to make sure that they are ready for what lies ahead.

"In some cases the classes need to be harder," Woodson said.

Barbara Dixon, associate dean for administration in the College of Liberal Arts, was concerned with Woodson's plan for a core curriculum amongst all Purdue students.

"I want (the core curriculum), but I'm not sure if the faculty wants it. What I have seen in small liberal arts colleges is that they assign books to the incoming freshman class to read before their first semester, and it unites them for discussion about the book," Woodson said.

Besides the students, the diversity and quality of life of the faculty was also a widely discussed topic. Venetria Patton, director of African American Studies, asked Woodson how he would improve the quality of life and improve the retention of the diverse faculty.

"I feel that bringing in more diverse faculty members would improve the quality of life of the faculty and make them want to continue teaching at Purdue," Woodson said."

tom stafford is the vice chancellor of student affairs, which covers everything from rotc, student gov, multicultural organizations, student orgs, arts nc state, student conduct, etc. nothing to do with financial aid or stafford loans which is a federal student aid program.

I kinda like the idea of having mary anne fox back, i dont think shes in the running though. I feel like we are loosing out a bit of the UNC board of govenors is more invovled in this than in the past because of the recent controversy, but i trust them to find someone capable.

I see no need to clean house, i think we have a great research university especially with everything going on at centennial campus. Also its not like a college football coaching staff where someone new brings in whoever they want. Granted people who work for the chancellors office might get cut and the new person can bring in folks there. They can't go appointing whoever they want to AD, provost, vice chancellor positions as all of those positions have to be approved by BOT and BOG. If we cleaned house there'd be more comittees to make more searches and spend more tax dollars.

^^I care. I mean, what if it turns out to be Lee Fowler's ole fishing buddy? We'd have to move him to a bigger office to make room for all the Excellent Award for Outstanding Excellence awards. Then our academics would steadily fall in the rankings but all our buildings would be PAR EXCELLENCE.

Seems that way, but it's hardly unexpected or surprising that a chancellor would be overpaid.

Just for reference, what have our past chancellors made?

The search for a new chancellor at N.C. State should have been conducted more openly, given the reason that the position was vacant (corruption).

Some interesting points regarding the selection process.

"So now that Woodson has the job, what do we know, beyond the hype the audience was fed at his appointment ceremony? There, the audience was told how the governor of Indiana tried to stop the soon-to-be-former Purdue University provost on the highway to prevent him from leaving the state, and how the chancellor of Purdue offered to top the $420,000 salary he will earn at N.C. State, if only he remained in Lafayette. They heard of his popularity with faculty and his fund-raising prowess. And what a great fit he was for State"

I didn't know which thread to stick this in, but it's just some background on Woodson.

Quote :
"William R. "Randy" Woodson, now 52 and the provost at Purdue University, has been named the next chancellor of N.C. State University, a flagship campus of the UNC system and a huge engine for the state's economy - an engine Woodson vows to kick into a higher gear.

He will bring his wife, Susan, co-founder of a successful women's magazine in West Lafayette, his guitar (for informal bluegrass jamming), and the paraphernalia for home-brewing tasty - and scientifically formulated - batches of ale."

Although I still don't like the lack of transparency in the UNC system's process, in this case I'm liking the outcome. Everything I'm reading about him seems like it'll be a positive change.

I guess the only thing that could be worrisome is his lack of experience (OMGOBAMA), given that he was only provost for 18 months before taking our chancellor's position. But ultimately, it'll be better then the good 'ol boy network that we'd had at state for years. In retrospect, MAF wasn't so bad after all.
