what is the point of Dr. Pepper 10?

i never knew that drinking diet soda, or specifically diet dr. pepper was ~.

what am i missing here? did dr. pepper honestly comb through focus group data and determine that they were losing out to a category of dudes who thought diet dr. pepper was ~ to the tune of deciding to create an entire new product?

Soft drinks as a whole are effeminate. Real men drink hard cider and grain alcohol. But within the realm of soft drinks, its no more effeminate than anything else. So feel like a faggot, but not like anymore of a faggot than the faggot who drinks diet coke down the hall.

I agree that the marketing is a bit...brash. But the soda itself is pretty good and different than diet. Also, I was under the impression the Zero/One/Max brands were trying to be more like the originals and not more like Diet. That was the whole point.

And in response to the original question, I think its mainly catered to the pigheaded blue collar workers who strive to tighten their waistlines, yet fear the social stigma of drinking diet soda...which this essentially is, yet tries to remove itself from that category with an aggressive (if poorly conceived) marketing plan that tries to make it seem like a badass concoction of sweat, bullets and mayhem. I haven't seen the early returns, but I'd think that even the most jaded market analyst would agree that this whole campaign was inherently fucked from its conception.

the last time i remember this existing was the 80's when diet coke seemed to be marketed fairly exclusively toward women...

I think you are giving the consumer public too much credit. I bet this campaign works.

The more difficult sell, and just as profitable if not moreso than the supermarket isle, will be trying to convince chains like McDonalds, taco Bell, etc to add this to their self serve fountain sodas.

I thought the whole thing was tongue-in-cheek, the commercials are deliberately ridiculous. The idea of saying certain drinks are for women or sissies would be considered sexist, but the whole campaign is done with a smile and a wink, so the audience is supposed to be in on the joke. I'll agree that the campaign is poorly conceived.

hahaha I must admit I feel just slightly ~ if I'm carrying around a Diet Dr. Pepper...never knew why or cared enough to change my purchase but the thought always crosses my mind. Now that I think about it though the labeling and color scheme is kind of effeminate, even the bottle shape is not exactly masculine or even neutral.

But I'm sure I'll give this DP10 crap a shot out of curiosity. It cracks me up to see such categorically gender-neutral products so pointedly marketed

I don't get it either. I do find the over the top ads slightly amusing, or at least I did. Now I don't care really, and still won't be buying this other than perhaps once to see how awful it is or isn't.

Now if this was Mt. Dew I'd have to reign in the wife from buying a dozen cases.

Coca Cola - Diet Coke - Coke Zero
Pepsi - Diet Pepsi - Pepsi One - Pepsi Max - Pepsi Throwback (which does taste pretty damn good)
Dr. Pepper - Diet Dr. Pepper - Dr. Pepper 10

They're just following the market trend. As far as the commercials go, IMHO Dr. Pepper just seems like they've been "trying to hard" ever since they resurrected Kiss.
