specifically the treksports, for only $42 after tax, shipped: http://www.rei.com/product/834964/vibram-fivefingers-treksport-multisport-shoes-mens-2011-overstock

not sure if i'll actually keep them, as i'm not sure i'm brave enough to wear them out in public...but if i do, my wife will refuse to be seen with me when i'm wearing them

^^ i got them because when i was hiking the AT a couple of weekends ago, one of the other guys in one of the shelters said they've been great for building muscle in his feet/ankles

after that, i checked with teh google and it seems that they can be good for that when used in conjunction with light hiking, walking (like taking the dogs around the lake), and working out...so yeah, that's what i'm planning on using them for

Saw some dude at Starbucks wearing these once and my friends were all "wtf is on that dude's feet?" and I had to explain this.

I guess TWW is good for some stuff.

Ah, the smell of hipster feet trending on the wind...

(EDIT: Not that I think you're a hipster, but these things are stupidly embraced in said community and it's pretty ridiculous. Not that there aren't plenty of legit runners and athletes using these for their intended purpose.)

CLEARLY YOURE NOT AN ATHLETE.

They do build muscle. A lot. But be careful not to heel stomp in them shits. Killed my left foot. Still having problem 6 months later.

I have 4 pair and have been running in them for 2 years now.
If you do plan to run in them work up to it. Start at 1/4 mile and add 10% each time after that. No, I'm not kidding.
I knew a girl that was is terrific shape and thought she could just start doing sprints. She was wrong and limped around for a week. She discover muscles in her feet she never knew she had.

there are plenty of other "trail" shoes you could have bought.

hiking? and you bought these? these arent hiking shoes. and you dont need to "build muscle" in feet/ankles. lol

and yeah, any minimalist shoe will need proper break in. they can ruin your life if you dont give them the proper break in. well they can ruin your experience, not really your life. but you'll end up hating the shoes and selling them because you'll blame the shoe for your injuries.

They are great for hiking and need no break in.
The human foot after being coddled all its life in cushion shoes is what needs to "break in".
The foot and ankle muscles will get stronger. One thing I have never done in 5 Fingers is twist my ankle.

I recently bought some and I love them. I also went straight to running 3+ miles in them with no break in period. Like a boss.

not for $42...and i didn't buy them as trail shoes since i wear my chaco sandals when i hike (seriously)

i realize i did mention LIGHT hiking, but i did not mean to imply that i was going to tackle the AT in them

and as a matter of fact, building muscle in your feet and ankles is indeed possible and beneficial, especially if you're someone like me who has weak ankles that tend to twist easily...between yoga and these, i'm hoping to strengthen those specific muscles so i'm less clumsy when hiking

I have that same pair. I also use them for (light) hiking - they're especially great for places like Hebron Rock Colony where there's a lot of water and slippery rocks. Have fun!
