For anyone travelling through the Garner area, stop by Carolina BBQ on Highway 70. It's right by the Outback. Great BBQ sandwiches and they have fried okra which should be mandatory for all BBQ places. It's traditional eastern NC style. 5/20/2012 12:28:32 PM

hell yeah! and white swan right around the corner on 210 (at the shell station...the original white swan is in smithfield on hwy 301) is another quick, cheap and tasty option.
i grew up around mcgee's crossroads...so i'm a little biased, but stephenson's is probably my favorite bbq place. although it's not really in the triangle. their barbecue chicken is great too.

Just had some authentic western style for the first time today. I must say it is better than any eastern style I have ever had. Which style does The Pit serve? I hear the food is decent, but a bit overpriced. Overrated or not? 5/20/2012 9:07:05 PM

NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
i'm from goldsboro. it used to be good about 10+ years ago. now they leave the bbq sitting for hours under heat lamps that dry it out. it's flavorless. the tater salad tastes/looks like instant mashed taters with mustard and a few chunks of pickles in it. the slaw is some pulverized cabbage floating in milk. maybe they've got their act back together, but i gave it another try 6 or 7 years ago and it was horrible. everyone from back home agrees. seems that the only people who eat there are old farts w/o tastebuds and out-of-towners on their way to the beach who don't know any better.
even mccall's (a quarter mile further down hwy 70) is better than that shit they sling at wilbers. but if you really want good bbq on your way to the coast, just slip on past Goldsboro and stop and Ken's Grill in La Grange (Little Baltimore, to be exact) and get some. they only cook hogs on Saturday and Wednesday iirc.
if you really want to get off the beaten path, go to Stonewall's in Hood Swamp or Grady's at Sleepy Creek (near Dudley). Stonewall's only has bbq on saturdays and i think Grady's is the same way.

I've never thought Parker's was anything to write home about. The sides at Wilber's aren't worth mentioning, but the right plate of pork is. Like any good spot, the quality will depend a little on the particular hog you get on any day. I've had killer Wilber's and decent Wilber's. I don't drive there for lunch any more because it's spottier than it used to be, but on a good day it's the best. 5/26/2012 7:58:34 PM

NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
last meal i tried to eat there was bad enough to keep me from ever going back. just too many better bbq joints nearby to justify giving wilber's another shot.
hell, you could go grab a shoulder and a bag of sauce mix at nahunta, throw the shoulder on the grill for several hours, mix the sauce mix up in a gallon of vinegar, chop the shoulder, pour on the sauce, and you'd have better bbq than wilber's is serving.
