One thread for discussing all the new goodies as they're announced/released.
first up, man, Apple needs to quit dragging ass and unveil the new iMac. I thought it was gonna be out a month or two ago. they're iPhone-fiving that shit and taking forever...hopefully it--unlike the last iPhone--won't be a disappointment when they finally release it.
I need a new computer in a bad way--I only have a little netbook, and I dropped it about 6 months ago so the battery doesn't stay in place anymore, and the charging jack is a little sketchy...and it runs Ubuntu Linux, which means that I don't have anything with a mainstream OS for those times when Linux just won't cut it. 5/30/2012 11:26:16 PM |

arent you the fella with all the fancy cars? how the hell have you gone 6 months with something that annoying? spend 1/50th of what you spend on a car and get a functional computer. I mean, maybe its because I work from home, but I just cant imagine not having a functional computer these days, I would not have AC/Heat before I would go without a computer... as for waiting for the new iMac there will always be something new a year or so away, just get something when you need it. 5/31/2012 3:40:21 AM |

-It's not that annoying; I just keep it on a table where I'm not moving it around and dislodging the battery -My cars don't cost me anything (other than arguably opportunity cost for investment). I pretty much always sell them for a profit, or at least a break-even. -Even if I had a Lamborghini and a Bentley, so what? I'm not into pissing money away. I'm definitely not cheap, but I'm certainly frugal. -I haven't really needed a new computer until about 2 months ago (I was living in a hotel for several months before that and had no need for a new desktop). For the most part, the only thing not getting the new desktop is impacting is that I want to set up a home recording studio, and need the computer first. With that in mind, it would be dumb to buy a new iMac when a redesign is imminent.
Regardless, this thread isn't about my purchasing decisions; it's about Apple hardware and software introduced in the year MMXII Anno Domini.5/31/2012 11:56:02 AM |

^^ well, if you sell them for break even, and assuming you keep them for more than a day, they do cost you in maintenance and upkeep, even if you do it all yourself and steal the parts, there is still the value of your time. I'm sure over the course of a year some combo of all of the above would cost you at least $500 per car. And I know that a redesign in imminent, something new is always imminent. I'm not saying get a new computer every week, but if $500-$1500 wont break you then I think getting it now and then getting the newer one 12-18 months from now isnt crazy, and much better than having to keep a netbook on a table all the time, which basically completely ruins the whole point of a netbook haha. Not trolling at all, and like I said my viewpoint is slanted by the fact that I am constantly have to meet with clients, travel too and from home, etc. But I wouldnt consider having a functional computer, especially a laptop that you can actually move around, as "throwing money around"... I mean, come on, this is the 90s man, computers arent a fad!

i usually make money even if you factor in repairs, parts, etc.
Having a netbook on a table for 2-3 months isn't ideal, but I find that preferable to buying a computer that will be redesigned in a month or two, or paying for 2 iMacs in 2 years (and going through the trouble of txfering data) 5/31/2012 12:29:49 PM |

God's Apple I was assembled in USA using American labor (although not his own, cause God would have no idea how to tell a transistor from a resistor). However, it is too slow to run Photoshop, or anything else this side of Tetris, so God's entry into digital photography field has been delayed until American robots finally replace Chinese laborers at the FoxConn plant. 5/31/2012 4:18:25 PM |

not being an expert on such things I want y'alls opinion: ready to buy one of the non-retina units. I'm currently using a 15" MBP BUT my favorite unit ever was a 12" powerbook I had back in the day (got stolen) I'm running cad software and doing a lot of 3D rendering (running an external monitor often) I miss the portability of my old 12" BUT i notice that new 13" units are dual core VS the 15" model's quad core... am I going to be better of getting the 15? I just not sure having not had a new one (current is a 2.4ghz intel core duo w/ 2gb ram, so what ever I get is an upgrade, btw will have to run windows too) 6/11/2012 5:43:04 PM |

^^ tell me more about native support for two external monitors please. Will it be an adaptor that has to be purchased or native (i.e., one monitor has to be connected to HDMI and the other to thunderbolt). That was also my biggest reason (followed by no dock) to avoid a MBP as I use my laptop for business purposes as well as recreational.
I feel like the price point of the MBP with Retina is much closer to what a standard Windows laptop costs these days. For comparison I maxed out a Thinkpad with specs as close to the MBP as possible and it came to about $2K. With the resale value of Apple and the retina screen I dont think there is a question as to which is the better deal. That's probably the first time I can ever say that about an Apple product.

I picked up one of the new Airport Express hockey pucks that were quietly released on Monday. I had an older model in my bedroom to act as a bridge/network extender but the older ones weren't simultaneous dual band so I would get less than optimal transfer speeds on my MBA when I was in my bedroom. I was really impressed with how ridiculously easy it was to set up. I just plugged it in and went to the Wi-Fi settings on my iPad and there was a new icon prompting me to set up the new Express. 20 seconds and a couple of taps later and it was up and running. It doesn't get any easier than that. 6/14/2012 11:50:55 AM |

Now if they only put decent video cards in the Macbook Pros I'd consider one. At least the option to upgrade to a 675m or 680m. A 650m with only 1GB is laughable. One day I'll be able to game on an Apple laptop...

Well, there's two thunderbolt ports, which can support two external monitors. You may need an adapter to connect it to your monitors if they are VGA/DVI. But this is a huge improvement from the past where you had to get an external USB Video adapter to extend your desktop across two external screens.
I'm not sure how the HDMI port plays into desktop extension. I suspect that you probably won't be able to do three external monitors using the 2 thunderbolt ports + HDMI port, but that's just a guess.6/14/2012 12:51:11 PM |

I think the HDMI is kind of a waste, Mountain Lion will be coming out soon and extending Airplay to OSX devices, seems that would be the best way to connect your macbook to your TV. 6/14/2012 1:14:42 PM |

That makes sense at home, and even so, I rarely have a need to extend my PC/laptop to a TV at home. apple TV or popcorn hour + NAS takes care of that.
The main use case for me is connecting my laptop to a TV in a hotel room, or someone's house I'm visiting, etc. The question is if that's a corner use case or typical for most. I'd guess so, but i have no data to back that up. 6/14/2012 1:27:35 PM |

well, i don't know if that's true, though it may be...it has widi, as well, but i've never used it (and it may kick out the HDMI/mini displayport)
admittedly, it does cut off the LCD if both ports are being used...i can definitely forgo that for $1600 in my pocket
i'm not really hating on apple, though...the number of people who will buy an MBP who will actually USE it to its full potential are far fewer than the ones who buy it because it's pretty and has the apple logo on it...i don't blame apple for making a solid, feature-packed product and then charging an arm and a leg for it because they know some people are more than happy to throw money at them
i hope i never need to spend $2000+ (because the MBPs START at something like $2k, right?) to get a functional laptop...i'm perfectly happy with mine

but yes it's true. Before thunderbolt laptops could only do 2 displays total (so internal + external or 2 externals) without the addition of another video card.
Quote : | "admittedly, it does cut off the LCD if both ports are being used...i can definitely forgo that for $1600 in my pocket" |
That's the whole point though. Still use the retina internal display PLUS 2 externals.

Yeah but PC laptops with similar specs are around the same price. If you want a cheaper laptop get a macbook air or another brand. Spec out a Dell or IBM with similar specs. You'll run close to $2k.
-And no the 13" Macbook Pro starts at $1199.
--Plus $2k is nothing for a powerful laptop. Start adding video cards and raid SSDs and you'll start to get into the $4k-5k laptop range which is not Apple's target audience.

^^Agreed on that point.
^Yeah it's partially Apple's fault.
Quote : | "Curiously, you can't actually select that resolution in the OS any longer. Where on other Macs you can explicitly select what display resolution you'd like to use (optionally going lower than the native resolution of the panel), here we have a slider with five positions ranging from "larger text" to "more space." In the middle sits "best" which presents apps, icons and text in roughly the same size as you'd find them on a non-Retina display -- rendered in a higher resolution. It's perhaps more friendly for novice users, but remember: this is a laptop with the word "Pro" in the name." |
Quote : | "Yes, terrible. Unlike a PC, where getting a higher-res display just means tinier buttons to click on, here OS X is actively scaling things up so that they maintain their size. This means that non-optimized apps, which would otherwise be displayed as tiny things, instead are displayed in their normal physical dimensions with blurry, muddy edges. You do have some control over this scaling, with five separate grades to choose from, but none will make these classic apps look truly good. At least, not until their developers release the updates they're no doubt frantically working on at this very moment.
Take Google Chrome, for example. You might forgive the buttons and UI elements for being ugly, but even the text rendered on webpages is blurry and distorted. It's bad enough that you won't want to use Google's browser until it's updated, which will surely leave some cynics wondering if indeed this isn't a ploy to get folks to spend a little more quality time with Safari. Good thing Safari's about ready for its own update." |
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/13/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review/
While scaling is great I'd want the option to run things at native resolution. I guess that's what the "more space" option is.
