Are there like, hacking conventions and shit?
Hack offs? Where you throw your wickedest hack at your opponent?
Are we firmly in the realm of hack-extortion yet?
I'm pretty sure hacking is what the Mafia does these days instead of drugs, women, and wine

99% of what the media reports as 'hacking' is just DDoS stuff that's trivial to do with readily available software.

had a friend once that was a CS (or CE?) grad at State. Anyways, he came over once and demonstrated a common way to break through a simple password protection system. Granted, I am sure that nothing major is backed up by just a password, but it seemed pretty straight forward. 12/27/2014 6:49:02 AM |

I just saw this guide from Linux Format called "The Hackers Manual 2015"; I later found it for free on the Internets.
Also, more importantly, I just found this free credential program that's all about making bogged-down single-page applications using Full-Stack JavaScript™: http://www.freecodecamp.com/ (but at least LinkedIn recognizes it as a university, so credentialism ahoy) 6/12/2015 9:16:43 PM |

So, without getting into who did what wrong to whom, lettuce take a step back and objectively look at the situation:
We are now in an era where a foreign entity can hack your system and get you fired from your job. As was evidenced with D. Wasserman Schulz and Ann Dacey have both been forced out of the DNC after the hack, with others set to resign soon as well. The situation is a little nutso, right? I mean, there is something to be said for always doing the right thing at work. But fact of the matter is, that doesn't always happen. In the past, I have my doubt if someone would have actually been fired over internal conflicts like this. In some ways, I feel as if SOMEONE had to take the fall for this all, even if they had limited involvement.
But the bigger issue I think is the malicious hacking. 8/3/2016 10:18:41 AM |
FroshKiller All American 51922 Posts user info edit post |
Nah, man, I disagree with you strongly there. Your most basic security precept is to assume you have already been hacked and will be hacked again. It's a foregone conclusion. When confidential information gets leaked and someone ends up fired, it isn't the hack that gets them fired--it's what they said or did that was revealed.
Take out the hacking bit and replace it with the more legitimate means of discovery you prefer. Would that person still have been fired for what they said or did? Then it ain't the hack, and the hack is not the issue.
[Edited on August 3, 2016 at 10:46 AM. Reason : Unless your job was to prevent the hack, in which case yes, the hack gets you fired.] 8/3/2016 10:46:25 AM |

I agree with some of that, which is why I tried to include a disclaimer about doing the right thing, regardless, when working.
But shit, there were (forced) resignations over that Ashley Madison hack, which I'm not 100% sure was directed at the security team. Likewise, I'm not 100% sure those people at the DNC who are being forced out actively conspired to hurt Sanders' campaign.... I thought it was some staffers, and not the figure heads, who were most culpable here. I realize quite often a high ranking official has to fall before people feel justice. But in these cases, the hackers perhaps cost the job of someone with limited involvement.

EMCE balls deep 89859 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, crazy shit man.
I mean, it's kind of fucked up enough that American's are involuntarily forced into a system like Equifax or Experian in the first place. But if that information that is collected can't be safegaurded, that leaves the population exceptionally vulnerable.
FUCK, this makes you want to take all of your money and hide it in the mattress. 9/8/2017 8:34:26 AM |
TerdFerguson All American 6603 Posts user info edit post |
Yea I mean all those other corporate hacks were turrible
But equifax you didn't even have to directly interact with and they STILL were storing what amounts to the Rosetta Stone of people's financial lives, fucking everything a hacker would need to use your identity all in one place.
If equifax still exists in any form after the class action lawsuit that is about to rain down on their asses then our system is broken. 9/8/2017 8:40:08 AM |
EMCE balls deep 89859 Posts user info edit post |
The federal government (OPM) was hacked a while back, and the only thing they did was offer a year of credit monitoring services. A fucking year. That seems the be the standard now, as I think I read that's what equifax is offering.
Man, with a social security number, a few past addresses, and your name.... someone could open up a credit card in your name this year, next year, and the year after that. 9/8/2017 8:47:40 AM |

TerdFerguson All American 6603 Posts user info edit post |
Personally, I'm skeptical that credit monitoring would be worth a damn anyways.
The other kicker is how little law enforcement is able to do (or perhaps they aren't interested in doing anything) once they actually Think they've Identified and ID thief. I know an older couple that somehow literally had the address of their suspected ID thief down in Florida (of course it's Florida). The cops did nothing, wouldn't even knock on their door and ask tough questions.
We have to do so much better, from top to bottom.
