91 It sounds like people are getting good points per day with the 160's. I'm still working on the first one. 75% with 18hrs remaining. These remind me of the early days when it would often take a couple of days with the fastest systems. These are great if you have dial-up too, so you don't have to connect as often.
Just noticed in the time it took to post this we have another new user! Keep it up! Welcome to our newest member: OcellNuri!

It looks like Stanford is giving the stats pages an overhaul. I found this this link: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=59 I'm not sure if it is just a test page or what. One good thing I noticed is that all active users (potentially those with email addresses as their username too) have the number of active processors finally displayed. I think at least chemp had this problem. 3/28/2004 11:48:04 PM |

Hey kruznby, those genetics tshirts you have on sale on your webpage, who'd you get to do those for you. Reason i'm asking is I have to design and find someone to make tshirts for my senior design team for as cheap as i can find.
I got a couple questions for you too, i'm doin a persuasive speach in public speakin on folding and a couple things I'm interested in knowing are 1. were you the first person to found this team and 2. how long have you been folding
i'm looking for another persuasive point to get ppl to fold, so far i got: its competitive, you can do it for your school, and do it for humanity and solve diseases

As for the T-shirts, I'm not sure where we got them made, but you can email David Shuford and find out. He was in charge of it.
I did start the original Folding@Home team where we ended up 262 out of 1219 teams. Shortly afterward, I started the Genome@Home team on "Genoming since: Thu May 24 18:06:06 2001" since it was more dial-up friendly. We finished 148 out of 1878. Then both projects merged into the current stat system.
Be sure to look at the F@H Eduction page. It has lots of good easy to understand articles: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/education/ I'd hit up the disease research as the main point. Also another point is that it is SO EASY. It takes about 5-10 minutes to setup and like Ronco says, "Set it and forget it." Think about how much work can be done while your surfing or sleeping. Good luck man! 3/30/2004 10:10:37 PM |

I have to admit that I didn't come in with the idea of continually running it. It was just a trial to see what all of the fuss is about. Bearing that in mind, over about 3 days' use, my biggest complaint is that it doesn't seem as polished as some of the other distributed projects I've seen. Not that I'm running any of them, either, at the moment.

I just got done moving and finally have the new network setup. i don't think it will be as good as it was before, as my wireless is having some problems now (randomly disconecting, aka depends on when and how long it disconnects and how often F@H retries to send). but I am back as well from a two week or so missing status. hopefully we can get some new members and start moving back up. it is odd to see even those producing are slipping some...
aka the first thread on this topic has KRUZNBY at 1,335 rank on 7/29/2003. where he is now at 1,498. I guess there are a lot still producing at high levels for the project. I want to break 3,000 but there appears to be a lot of others trying to do that with me... 4/15/2004 5:17:59 PM |

Is it just me, or are the WU's getting slower to process? I mean, I was getting 1 step (1%) done every 4 minutes on 2 of my machines (3ghz+), and now a single step is taking closer to 30 mins.... 24 mins to be exact..
Anyone else seeing this? 4/15/2004 7:15:29 PM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
It really depends on the type and size of the WU's. Some also have more steps than others. If you want to measure performance, points/day is a good measure. Tinkers are nearly always slower than GROMACS and I have seen a few more tinkers lately. If you use EMIII, it has a few nice features that calculate your performance if you are interested. Roughly on my XP 1700+ I average 48 pts/day for GROMACS and much less for Tinkers. 4/16/2004 7:42:38 AM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
93 Also, there is a new reference machine being used to calculate point values. Previously, WU using the TINKER core were highly under valued compared to GROMACS. Now some of the TINKERs are worth ~250pts. Here is the announcement: http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=7665

I am back at my pace. I am not sure how this new readjustment of points will work... the fact that it will work retroactively will probably shuffle a few things. we will see.

I just signed up, managed to get an old PC for free and it's just been sitting around doing nothing, so figured I would put F@H on there.
It's old, only 200mhz, but I guess anything helps. 4/22/2004 10:27:22 AM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
We're going to have to work hard to catch Apple. I hope we can. ToLiveALie: anything you can do will help. If you want to run both projects equaly, you could choose the console version. I'm not sure how often it's difficult to get WU from distributed.net or how often their servers are down, but by running both, you could make sure no CPU cycles are lost. I do think the screen saver version is good for 'advertisement' if it is in an area where others can see. I used to run it where I work and would have people ask about it.
As for how points are being adjusted, they will not be retroactive. The one thing that may help AMD users is that TINKERS tend to run a bit faster on them. It may be beneficial to get TINKERS now. I'm going to run my AMD system with out the -advmethods flag and see if I can get more TINKERS. We will see what happens. Glad to have you back at full strength LeGo!
Opstand: Glad to have you aboard. A 200 MHz machine may not make some of the deadlines. When you set up the client, there is an option which WU's you want to run. Choose G@H or Genome@Home. You will still get points for our team, and you won't have deadlines. On a side not, a 200 MHz machine maybe too slow to justify the electricity it uses. It's up to you. The slowest machine I have is 350 MHz, but it's at work so I don't have to pay for the electric bill.

Well, I'm going to put F@H on my work comp too. It's a P4 2.8Ghz that's on 24 hours / day. I'm probably going to install on my wife's computer too, which is a 1Ghz Duron. I don't care about the electicity cost of that old comp, b/c I use it for other things too (mainly to toy around with), like my file server and eventually a jukebox. 4/22/2004 12:19:55 PM |

Yeah, don't forget to check out our website for tips like the one above. It maybe a bit outdated with the GROMACS and TINKER info, but I'm waiting to see how the new stats will affect strategies to increase production. http://www.genejockeys.com/Fold&Gene@Home/ 4/23/2004 10:23:40 AM |

94... it appears something happened as teams are increasing production today... we had a good day yesterday and today looks good. we will see how it goes, but so far it is increasing across the board. 4/23/2004 11:37:26 AM |

The new stats are really going to cause some serious inflation. The 249pt TINKER I am working on now will give me about 100 pts/day on my AMD 1700+. The best I could hope for in the past was around 50pt/day with GROMACS. It's just going to take me 2.5 days to turn in my current WU. 4/23/2004 12:57:07 PM |
