Lol, I know they can physically reach the senate, I meant could she be seated in that window or does it take some time to seat an appointment. But now I see your point that seniority stays with the seat. 12/14/2018 12:27:47 PM |

All it takes is for the replacement to be duly appointed/certified.
The Senate can refuse to seat the replacement if they feel the appointment is illegitimate, but that seems unlikely.

^^ I have not been registered Republican for years, I voted for Democrats over Republicans probably 3:1 in the latest midterm election (and abstained from another large percentage of races), and not only can I "not bring myself to defend this shitshow"--I am as hostile to Trump and Trumpism as almost anyone you'll find, even if my views are that of a moderate, libertarian-leaning traditional Republican (think maybe 4 parts Jon Huntsman, 1 part Gary Johnson)

There are no "traditional Republicans" left in/running for power, which explains many of Duke's recent votes.
Duke and beatsunc are libertarians. Rjrumple is the only active poster which can be considered a solid Republican voter, but I'd be happy to hear about his recent votes that argue otherwise.

Jerry Falwell, Jr is here to dispel any misconceptions you may have about evangelism:
Quote : | "You and other white evangelical leaders have strongly supported President Trump. What about him exemplifies Christianity and earns him your support?
What earns him my support is his business acumen. Our country was so deep in debt and so mismanaged by career politicians that we needed someone who was not a career politician, but someone who’d been successful in business to run the country like a business. That’s the reason I supported him.
The deficit and debt have increased during his first two years.
Yeah, Congress, the spending bill that they forced on him in order to get the military spending up to where it needed to be — he said that would be the last time he signed one of those. But he had no choice because Obama had decimated the military, and it had to be rebuilt.
Is there anything President Trump could do that would endanger that support from you or other evangelical leaders?
No.
That’s the shortest answer we’ve had so far.
Only because I know that he only wants what’s best for this country, and I know anything he does, it may not be ideologically “conservative,” but it’s going to be what’s best for this country, and I can’t imagine him doing anything that’s not good for the country." |
...and my favorite:
Quote : | "There’s two kingdoms. There’s the earthly kingdom and the heavenly kingdom. In the heavenly kingdom the responsibility is to treat others as you’d like to be treated. In the earthly kingdom, the responsibility is to choose leaders who will do what’s best for your country. Think about it. Why have Americans been able to do more to help people in need around the world than any other country in history? It’s because of free enterprise, freedom, ingenuity, entrepreneurism and wealth. A poor person never gave anyone a job. A poor person never gave anybody charity, not of any real volume. It’s just common sense to me." |
Those good for nothing poor people!

Quote : | "“The one thing you’ve got when you come into this place is your credibility, and once you lose it, it’s gone and it’s gone forever. He’s lost it,” Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) told VICE News just off the House floor. “It’s very difficult to negotiate anything, because you don’t know if he’s going to stick with it. You don’t know what his attitude is going to be tomorrow or what his position is going to be tomorrow.”
Simpson is on the powerful Appropriations Committee, which controls the federal pursestrings, and, as an 11-term veteran, he has clout that’s earned him the respect of many Democrats, along with his GOP colleagues. He says his frustration with the president and his made-for-TV spending battle isn’t unique.
“There’s a lot of members of our caucus who think this shutdown is stupid,” Simpson said.
The frustration has only increased since Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — who was assured by the White House that the president was behind him — got every Senate Republican to sign off on a bill in December to fund the government through February.
It sailed through unanimously, which surprised many political watchers because members of both parties hated the compromise but swallowed it anyway. But the legislation that would have avoided this shutdown drew backlash from conservative pundits, and then former Speaker Paul Ryan refused to bring it up and instead rallied his troops around a bill to give Trump $5 billion for his wall. That ordeal embarrassed many senior Republicans, including McConnell, and has left Democratic leaders refusing to even play Trump’s games this time around.
“We had a deal. Everybody in America knows we had a deal” “We had a deal. Everybody in America knows we had a deal. That’s why McConnell passed the bill,” House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer told VICE News as he walked to the group photoshoot for newly elected Democratic Party leaders Thursday. “It’s very difficult to deal with a guy who you can’t trust will stay with what the deal is.”" |

I am probably as close to #NeverTrump as you will get on this site. Personally, me and other #NeverTrumpers I talk to, don't really care about the demographic makeup of our party. I'm no longer a Republican either officially or practically, but I think I share enough common DNA with the NeverTrump types to comment.
I don't give a shit, personally. I care about competence and policy, not who's making or executing it.
Now, I think that politically, it's a liability. I also think that it's a symptom of an errant party. I also think that bringing more diverse backgrounds under the tent would be beneficial in terms of not having policy blind-spots.
...but I wouldn't be particularly bothered by it in and of itself, if they were meeting the standards on competence and good policy.1/17/2019 12:21:30 PM |

I agree with this statement when it comes to individual elections, if I'm being asked to choose between a man and a woman I take the one who is most likely to go with the policies I like or who can institute them best. But when the Republicans in the house are still 93% male (compared to only 61% for Democrats), there's clearly a problem in how the party approaches diversity.1/20/2019 5:30:23 PM |

that's what i'm saying. It's not a problem in and of itself that needs to be addressed. Not in the sense some make it out to be, at least. It is a symptom of other problems that need to be addressed.
* It is a problem in the sense that it is maybe a bit of a political albatross, and it probably makes it easier to come up with shitty policy at times, due to having a blind spot on certain things. 1/21/2019 11:42:57 PM |
