dude my folding stats have gone to absolute crap.
I have 6 machines that are dedicated folders, but for whatever reason I am not getting dick for work units or points.
1900+ Athlon, 1.5ghz Celeron, 2 533mhz celerons, piii450, and G4 450mhz. Any clue what is going on here? 4/30/2004 12:23:24 PM |
LeGo All American 3916 Posts user info edit post |
you should be getting more points. not sure what to say, your 1900 should have more by itself. I am going to assume, they all stillh ave the same name, are at 100%, aren't frozen (some of my comps would freeze for a week and I wouldn't notice), the logs show them working/connecting/submitting WU's.
for the slower comps they are now assigning the slower units (or units that take longer to fold). so they might not submit that often and would be of higher points. that might explain some of it, but not all of it, not sure what to say.

Noen- Check your flags. You should have at least -forceSSE on the 1900+ and PIII450. Unfortunatly Celerons are quite slow for folding. What's your points per day on the 1900+? 5/1/2004 8:58:49 AM |

Welcome to our newest member: mysteryegg! Hang in there folks. We are still clinging to staying in the top 100. Some of our top producers are really flying high now and we have 41 active users. Every bit helps. We are gaining some ground on some teams ahead of us. Keep it up. Fold on!

Here is a link to our team website with lots of info: http://www.genejockeys.com/Fold&Gene@Home/ Basically you help disease research by running protein folding simulations on your computer. You can get the program at: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/download.html Remember our team number=59 when you set it up. Let us know if you have any problems. 5/6/2004 1:42:37 PM |

The thing is nothing has changed, I have been running optimized scripts with the ver 4 client and it just seems like my points have fallen to nothing.
But im getting a new 2.8ghz P4 HT in a week or two here at work, that should help :-D 5/6/2004 2:06:59 PM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
Noen- the only other thing I can think of is you have a bad WU on one of your machines. I had to delete one once when I noticed my CPU usage was not 100%. Another posibility is if you just copied your config file to a different machine, Stanford would not recognize it as so and you get no points for all "copies". I see you do have 2 active processors this week, but with the slower machines you have it may take a few weeks to return a WU. When you get the HT, be sure to run two instances to maximize performance, but note sometimes this configuration does not play nicely with other CPU intensive programs. Good luck. 5/6/2004 2:53:47 PM |

Another quick query: I installed the client this morning around 9 and started work then. How long does it usually take to upload results? How many work units are completed before upload? 5/6/2004 9:32:39 PM |

Welcome to our newest member: NeoEraser! Wow that was fast! You are already on the board and returned 1 WU so far. You can check it out here: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&teamnum=59&username=NeoEraser The longer the WU's take the more points you get for them. They are returned as soon as they are done if there is a network connection available. Glad to have you aboard! 5/6/2004 10:15:42 PM |

OK, sounds like you are fine. You won't show up in the stats until you return a WU. It will probably be a few days before you finish one, depending on the 'size' of the WU. 5/7/2004 11:15:19 AM |

^at that speed you could run 2 consoles if you wanted, just be sure to have them setup in different directories and use the -local tag
i can do pretty much anything (except graphics/gaming) even with 2 consoles running, check out task manager and it will show you how much CPU time the 1 client is taking that can give you a good indication on whether or not you can support another client running...
on a side note some of the pIII450's have been taking 3-4 days per WU @ 100% CPU

There are really only two reasons I can think of to run two instances. 1) You have more than one CPU or you have a CPU that supports hyperthreading. 2) You are concerned about network, Stanford server outages or you have dial-up.
Quote : | "i can do pretty much anything (except graphics/gaming) even with 2 consoles running" | With HT enabled and by running 2 instances, you do increase your overall performance, but at the cost of the 'virtual' CPU does not want to give up cycles to CPU intensive programs.
Since you have an AMD system, I'd just stick to 1 console to keep it simple. Also if you are running the GUI, you can not have more than 1 GUI running at once.5/7/2004 1:18:25 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
^either way, the consoles are still set to idle/low priority so they aren't going to consume your CPU time that much....
my experience: i ran 1 console on my 2.4C and the CPU time was only at 49% when the computer was idle and the console set to low, it was performing 1% of a WU every 4-5 minutes, i added a second console and now the CPU is up to 99% CPU time when idle and completing 1% of a WU every 4-5 minutes as well but x2 instances... i would be dumb not to run 2 instances, unless of course i was running a cpu intensive program... the 2.4c is on dial up so i connect twice a day, if it was on broadband i could feasibly finish close to 6 WU/day 5/7/2004 3:09:17 PM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
^Agreed. I just don't want to scare new people off by making it sound more complicated than it is. Plus I don't want people to think you can't run CPU intensive programs while you fold. It's mainly an HT issue.
Quote : | "2.4c is on dial up so i connect twice a day, if it was on broadband i could feasibly finish close to 6 WU/day" |
If this is the case, maybe run more than 2 instances. You can have up to 8 I believe. That way you are always folding something. 5/7/2004 3:20:13 PM |

Welcome to our newest members: DJ_Forge and Clevelander! We've had more new members sign up in the last week, then when LeGo and I tried a banner ad. Great work guy! Keep it up. I know you can buy basic F@H t-shirts from 'Stanford'. I think the link is in this thread somewhere. If someone wants to make one, that good too. Another option is that someone might want to design a skin for EMIII. I also thought it would be entertaining to have a giveaway for the the 1st new folder to make it to 5K pts. Unfortunatly I'm broke right now. SilverSurfinSmackerKrackers is really tearing it up.

"i haven't run it in a long ass time cause i don't like what it does to my cpu temps"
It shouldn't have any affect if you set it to idle and not low CPU useage. Idle is cool cuz you can do light tasks like internet or office apps and its still very responsive. 5/10/2004 11:18:58 AM |
