I have a right-of-way question for you... In the scenario below, who would have right of way: the blue car making a U-turn, or the green car making a right turn?
Context: The blue car has missed the exit to the beltline (not well marked for travelers going outbound on Western), and could not u-turn at the next light (no u-turns at the blue ridge intersection). The next available u-turn intersection is this one, and there is a left-turn lane cut out of the median.
I have heard from one cop that the blue car would have right of way, since it is already on the main road, and the green car is on a secondary road with a stop. I have heard from another cop that the green car would have right of way because u-turns generally yield to right turns, and the green car would be expecting the blue car to make a left turn, not a u-turn.
What say you? This is actually important, since I deal with the situation on a daily basis.

I, too, think the u-turner would yield...but that's just a guess. 7/14/2012 2:37:35 PM |

i think since there is no traffic signal, the blue car has the ROW since they're on the main road and green has a stop sign
if it were a protected left turn (arrow) for the blue car and a right turn arrow for the green car, then the green car would have the ROW

I would say the green car must yield the right-of-way:
§ 20-158. Vehicle control signs and signals. (b) Control of Vehicles at Intersections. – (1) When a stop sign has been erected or installed at an intersection, it shall be unlawful for the driver of any vehicle to fail to stop in obedience thereto and yield the right-of-way to vehicles operating on the designated main-traveled or through highway.
If Western is considered a controlled access highway:
§ 20-140.3. Unlawful use of National System of Interstate and Defense Highways and other controlled-access highways. (6) To fail to yield the right-of-way when entering the highway to any vehicle already travelling on the highway.7/14/2012 3:30:43 PM |

is the car considered still travelling on the highway if it stops and changes directions? 7/14/2012 4:21:50 PM |
TenaciousC All American 6307 Posts user info edit post |
additional point: many vehicles can't make a clean u-turn at that intersection if there is a car stopped at the stop sign (meaning the car stopped at the sign occupies the space that the u-turning car needs to make a turn without reversing and maneuvering around the stopped car). 7/14/2012 4:59:50 PM |

I live off Deboy St. so I am glad TenaciousC asked that question...
My question is, you see people on TV give consent to have their vehicles searched when they have drugs in their car. Do you think these people think you won't find it, they are afraid they are admitting guilt by refusing the search, or they are just plain stupid? 7/15/2012 12:46:47 AM |

Yes. More expensive than the Charger but purpose built. The Chargers really aren't holding up that well at all. I would like to see some of the new Ford Police Interceptors (the twin-turbo, AWD version only) out in the streets. But then again, I would take a Tahoe over all of em.

I've been wondering whether RPD would go Chevy or Dodge. Seems like Ford has brought an interesting product to the table with the Interceptor but there's a lot to go wrong (turbo, AWD, no history of hard use on the platform). I had suspected Chevy when I started seeing Tahoes, but this is the first marked Caprice I've seen.

42 hours a week (this varies if training or court is schedule for the week which is another 10.5 hours).
Just depends, some nights I have no paperwork to do and other nights it carries over to the next day.

You have to have insurance no matter what, make sure to add the car back on your policy even if you are driving it right down the street.
You are better off caught with no registration than no insurance. 8/20/2012 12:03:58 PM |

Tree, I KNOW I've picked up a temp registration, because you can't get an inspection without a current registration and you can't renew a registration when you don't have it inspected. I've had to go this twice for my mother in laws car, get a 5 day registration or something to get it inspected to get a real registration renewal. 8/20/2012 12:54:49 PM |

May have been asked already:
What's the deal with leaving police cars at gas stations and random other places all day? Everyone knows there's no cop around.

Horseshit - I've gotten cars inspected several times with registrations that had been expired for months.
Or I must be super lucky.
On a somewhat related note, I know it's my responsibility anyway, but why have I never received a notice of renewal for registration or a bill for taxes owed (they DO make a point to send a "final notice" with late fees for the bill)

Yes. Some people were a lot of fun, some were annoying. I have had'em on shifts that were out of control busy and I have had'em on nights were it did nothing but rain and we sat around.

I don't work in that area, but I would assume that they are being worked on or transported to repair facilities.

This came up while I was driving around w my sister yesterday. What to do in a scenerio like this ( and I have seen this happen on Forensic Files too, she was kidnapped, raped, and killed):
He rams into the back of my car at a stop. And my intuition, after considering all things, that this was intentional. Do I,
1)Stay in my car and call the police 2)If he starts walking toward my car, drive away or stay calm and see what he wants 3) Drive to a well lit place bfore exchaning anywords or anything else 8/20/2012 9:43:41 PM |
