well.. I guess that's it for the o's.. most disappointing season in a long time
hopefully we'll have a good offseason..
fire ponson.. run him out of baltimore do something with sosa.. pay him the league minimum, or cut him loose altogether get a solid outfield, and an top starting pitcher.. and come back strong next year..
wonder who will manage next year.. oh well.. bring on football 8/29/2005 8:32:30 PM |

absolutely. get rid of ponson and sosa by any means necessary. I'm not confident in our farm system either, so trading prospects like Maine and Penn wouldn't hurt me in the least... neither would getting rid of DuBose. Also, Jorge Julio, Kline, and Reed should probably not be back. Raffy is done, and Surhoff will probably retire.
As far as next year, I'd like to see more of David Newhan. I say put him in left field, move byrnes to center, use matos off the bench, and keep gibbons in right. The problem is, Gibbons is coming very close to wearing out his welcome, so if he doesnt pan out, then put newhan in right, keep byrnes in left, and leave matos in center. With Raffy leaving, I think we should go for a big time first baseman... Todd Helton comes to mind, or maybe Richie Sexson.
At any rate, I'd get rid of Jim Beattie ASAP. He's incapable of making any sort of decent baseball decisions.
In a dream scenario, Angelos would sell the team, Ripken would come in as Team President (because Ripken wont work for Angelos), and Flanny would be GM. Seems Flanny makes all the good decisions, and Beattie screws them up (see: AJ Burnette).
As far as the Skipper goes, maybe it's time Rick Dempsey got a shot. who knows.
hopefully its a rockin' offseason though. we CAN compete with the yanksox, without succumbing to their ways. The Oriole Way is tried and true, and it's successful with the right people on board. 8/30/2005 5:06:13 PM |

I Hate being an Orioles Fan! It is like Deja Vu for like 10 years, start strong than after the all star break go down the crapper. And this raffy thing, good thing Lance is eating up headlines or he'd still be number one steroid story. 8/30/2005 8:06:45 PM |

ponson was released today
Quote : | "BALTIMORE -- Sidney Ponson was released Thursday by the Baltimore Orioles, who contend the pitcher's conduct and problems with alcohol the past nine months give them grounds to terminate his contract.
Ponson, on the 15-day disabled list with thumb and calf injuries, has one season left on a three-year deal that would pay him $10 million in 2006.
"The Orioles did what we felt was justified and right, and indeed what we were compelled to do," said H. Russell Smouse, the team's general counsel. "There was really no alternative after a deliberate consideration of all the facts."
Ponson's agent, Barry Praver, also did not return a call. Praver and Ponson have not talked to the media since the 28-year-old pitcher's arrest last week.
"We will clearly grieve it," said Michael Weiner, the general counsel of the players' association.
Ponson was arrested Aug. 25 and accused of driving under the influence of alcohol. He also was charged in January with driving under the influence in Florida, a case that has not been resolved.
That arrest came less than a month after he spent 11 days in an Aruban jail after he hit a judge during a Christmas Day fight at a beach in his home country. Ponson apologized for the fight and reached a settlement that involved community service and a charitable contribution.
Last week's arrest convinced the Orioles they had sufficient grounds to terminate his contract. In a one-sentence release Thursday, the Orioles said they placed the pitcher on "unconditional release waivers," citing a violation of the standard player contract. " |

Two clubhouse moves came in today
Elrod Hendricks (who's been in Baltimore for 30+ years) has been dismissed as Bullpen Coach and will be reassigned within the organization.
Ed Kenney, director of baseball administration, wont have his contract renewed at the end of the month. He's been with the club since 2000.
With Beattie out, and Flanagan running the ship, i'm looking forward to it. I hate to see Elrod go, as he's been a staple in the pen my whole life. I'd like to see Dempsey put back there, but who knows.
Told ya the offseason O's would be more exciting than the playoffs 10/17/2005 3:07:06 PM |
