I'm coming around on this. His "shooting slump" seems like it is now who he is. Jesus. Although our senior "4" getting just over 4 rebounds a game is a close second. Hellems is actually worse from the field than Hayes on the season which is hard to believe given how bad Hayes has been, but at least he makes up for it by being a serviceable 3 pt shooter.

I said I wouldn't piss on on Keatts anymore and I'm trying my best, but goddamn. It hasn't been this low in men's bball since Sid.

^^Hellems is our best 3 point shooter. Hayes honestly brings *nothing* to the offense. He's a point guard who doesn't make anyone around him better and doesn't regularly get buckets. Honestly at this point maybe bench him and roll with a starting 5 of Seabron, Morsell, Smith, Hellems and Dowuona.

And this season is still miles better than the final Gottfried season, which in my opinion was the most miserable season I've experienced. Even worse than the godawful sid teams led by the shittiest point guards we've ever had.

^^Unfortunately on this team "best 3 pt shooter" is still just serviceable, but yes, I agree Hayes is probably worse at this point despite Hellems being a senior big man who can't fuckin rebound. You were right, I was wrong. Happy?

I got no problem with rolling the ball out for Pass and seeing what he can do with bigger minutes or just letting Seabron handle the ball. Pass doesn't seem to have ACC speed/athleticism, but it can't get worse than Hayes at this point

Not sure what happened to Hayes as he had some flashes last season (still was obvious Shak was better even then). Maybe he bulked up too much in the offseason?

^^Gott's last season was miserable, but I don't remember it being like otherworldly bad and I went back and looked. We were 11-2 in our non-conf. and then completely shit the bed in the ACC (excepting that DSJ game against Duke). In other words, we didn't fuckin lose to a 3-7 horizon league team that year and we have plenty of time this year to stack up losses in the ACC too.

Hellems is shooting over 40% from 3. That's plenty more than just serviceable. Scott Wood was a career 41% 3 point shooter. Serviceable.

Smith is shooting 35% (on more attempts than Hellems) it's HIGHLY unlikely that he ends the season as the best 3 point shooter on the team. That would mean both he would have to drastically increase his 3pt% over the remaining games and Hellems would have to crater. The latter doesn't seem likely at all as Hellems has improved his 3 point shooting every season. Seems much, much more likely that Smith hits the notorious freshman wall and struggles a little bit in conference play. So no i don't think Smith is going to end the season shooting better from 3 than Hellems. There's nothing that really points to it.

Honestly though, 'm not sure how much of tonight was us being thin and not that good and how much was just Wright State having a really damn good game. I haven't heard anyone say that yet mostly just cause of the pessimism of losing to a bad team, but still, they hit >50% FG on the night and just under 40% on 3s, not to mention 15-16 on FTs. Now of course, is some of that on us for bad defensive sets? Yes. But also we could not keep them from driving to the basket and their ability to get 3s when they needed it or stuff a rebound was killer.

It's the same excuse that gets used for our poor shooting. We shoot poorly because our offense doesn't regularly produce good shots, not because we just randomly have bad nights.

They played well last night because our defense looked lackluster and we didn't adjust for their inside game.

One thing leads to the other. That means it's not a consolation for what amounts to an awful awful loss at home.

We don't have an entire team full of bad shooters (at least not as bad as they have been this season), we have an offense that doesn't regularly create open looks. One thing leads to the other.

Update: after the wright state game, Hellems is shooting 41% for 3 on the year (Smith is down to 34% FYI.) Also he is not the worst shooter from 2 on the team as he's starting to improve after an abysmal start and has now passed Morsell. Fully expect him to end the year shooting >45% inside the arc and continue to guy 40% from deep.

Weird that ESPN stats still show under 40%^. Either way, we can agree that his 3pt shooting has not been the problem.

The real ACC opener is tonight after a break. It will be interesting to see if that Wright state disaster was a one-off or if we can turn some things around. I fully expect an L on the road, but if we can play organized D and run even a few quality half-court possessions on O, I will be satisfied.

I don’t think I have ever seen a player regress like Cam has this year. It’s time for Pass to take more of his minutes.

I don’t understand why Keatts teams can’t consistently run a half court offense. There are times when you see off ball movement and quick passes and it produces good shots. And then it’s like they forget to move and it’s back to ISO ball and contested jumpers for long stretches. The fact that Keatts can’t get them to run offense out of timeouts ever is the nail in the coffin for me.

I tried but he ain’t the guy.
