Yeah I get the rule. Just a really unlucky break. Especially considering how it played out. I think Miami went 3 and out so it didn’t matter. But because it was a penalty on us, we rekicked and Miami took over at like the 10. Instead of it being either our ball at the 2 or blow the play dead as soon as his helmet was off, so it’s Miami ball but they get it at about the 2 yard line.

I’m sure it was called correctly. Just felt unfair that not only did we not get the ball back, but it was penalty on our guy for having his helmet pulled off and then the ball bouncing into his arms. If he had his helmet pulled off but somebody else on our team recovered, it’s not a penalty. And it wasn’t even called on the field, it was reviewed. Which I wasn’t sure that was even a reviewable play.

But other, much more preventable things cost us the game. Jumping offsides on the FG attempt. Dropped multiple passes. Defense couldn’t get off the field on some crucial 3rd downs. Because we couldn’t run the ball (or abandoned it entirely at some points), we had a lot of 3rd and longs and couldn’t convert. Plenty of blame to go around, so I don’t mean to harp on that punt fumble play. That unfortunate turn of events was just a kick in the nuts.

If you look at the video clips being passed around on that offside, it probably should have been a false start on the center. Dude grabbed the ball and set the snap in such a way that it was pulled back. That's why he jumped off.

Dunno how we give up that 3 and 16 though... that was brutal

That's one of the dumber things I've read recently. Hate the result of that play, but that is not even remotely on Doeren. If anything that's on Miami's defense not tackling properly, but it's just kinda a fluke. You're in the heat of the moment, you're not gonna be thinking about a helmet, just following your instincts.

That 4th down attempt was not good. Can't say I'm convinced it made a huge difference given the way Miami was moving through our D in the last half, but giving the other team the ball at your own 50 is one thing; trying to convert 4th and 7 with a dinky little comeback route BEHIND the LTG is another.

Still hardly any intermediate passing game. Only shallow crossers and deep balls, which works ok against a bad defense but not once someone figures it out.

Despite the loss, our defense looked good in the first half. Miami did score a lot, but I don't think they entered the red zone til the second half; all their scores were on long plays. Which sucks, but we held them to FGs multiple times.

Definitely a frustrating game last week. Not sure it quite convinces me Doeren isn't the guy, but it definitely ain't helping his case

I was joking. Clearly the coaches deserve blame for play calling and certain things. But fluky plays going against and players dropping passes isn’t on the coaches.

So if I remember right, we went deep to Anthony Smith on 1st down? I’m a little fuzzy on that one. Then 2nd down Devon Carter dropped an easy ball. 3rd down was maybe a screen pass for 2-3 yards. And then 4th down was obviously the play you described. Feels like that 3rd down call was weak. 3rd and 10, knowing you want to go for on 4th…maybe the 4th down call would’ve been more appropriate on 3rd down. Pick up 5-6 and then have a 4th and much shorter. Or even run the ball on 1st or 2nd down. Obviously none of it matters of Carter just makes that 2nd down catch.

Person had 9 carries and Knight had 8. We threw the ball 42 times. We consistently got into 3rd and 8 situations. Partly because we didn’t much success running and partly because we eventually abandoned the run and just passed. Would’ve been nice to see us try to run a little more and stay ahead of the chains but we were having limited success on the ground anyways.

Prior to this game, winning the division was going to require winning at WF. Literally nothing has changed in that regard. Beat them and we're still in the driver's seat. Lose and they are. Same exact thing as if we had beaten Miami.

Yeah. Wake is good. But they still have State, @clemson, and @bc. All loseable games. Good chance they win 2 of 3. But Wake is hardly unbeatable. We can still take care of business.

Also, I don’t totally get the sentiment of “fire everyone and start over” if Wake goes, say, 8-0 in the ACC and we’re 6-2 or something. It’s disappointing. But that is kinda a bad reason to fire everybody and start over

They were all possible losses before Moore was out. They are also all still possible wins. None of the remaining teams are *that* good.

Unrelated to that…this is just me going off memory so I may be wrong here. But it feels like we do a lot of underneath/short passing stuff and then take a few shots deep. We don’t seem to run many routes in the, like, 10-15 yard range. Doesn’t seem like we use the middle of the field a lot…maybe losing Angeline at TE is part of the reason for that, I don’t know. Feels like a lot of screen passes, short routes in the flat, and then some deeper shots usually down the sideline. Outside of Anthony Smith, it doesn’t seem like our WRs are really fast enough to take those short routes and break them for long gains (and Smith is rarely used in that way anyway). I would be interested in seeing a passing chart for Leary if such a thing is available.

And I may be wrong on that, but just going from memory it doesn’t seem like our passing game utilizes the whole field. And I think Leary had the arm to make a lot of passes, but it doesn’t seem like he’s being asked to

^^^ I don't watch enough ST to know if that's standard procedure, but one of the commenters on Twitter pointed out the obvious: their entire o line rapidly placed their hands down to simulate a start. That's dirty and if it is legal shouldn't be.

I've been complaining about that all season. I haven't thought about it from a speed perspective before, but I've seen videos of our practices on ONE with Wolfpack where they practice throwing shorter stuff to Zonovan/Bam. Never seen it in game though.

^ Leary does have the arm for it but not the accuracy from what we've seen so far

I am now convinced that we can not ever hire a coach in any sport who does not have a seething hatred of Wake Forest, far beyond any distaste Roy Williams had for us. If their entire goal in life is not to make Wake Forest's life miserable they cannot be our head coach
