https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2021/11/09/upton-receives-death-threats-after-backing-bipartisan-public-works-bill/6351806001/
Link includes death threat audio.
Quote : | " Republican U.S. Rep. Fred Upton said he has received well over 1,000 calls including multiple "nasty" death threats since he voted for a bipartisan infrastructure bill that he helped write with GOP and Democratic colleagues earlier this year.
More than 90% of the calls are coming from outside of Upton's southwest Michigan district, a spokesman said, including one man from South Carolina who left this message: "I hope you die. I hope everybody in your f------ family dies," while calling the longtime lawmaker a "f------ piece of s--- traitor."
[...]
The congressman said the calls started after his Republican colleague, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, publicly posted the names and phone numbers of Upton and a dozen other GOP House members who voted in support of the bill, calling them "traitors."" |
Only traitors want roads and bridges.
I love that Upton blames the death threats on polarization as if the threats were coming from crazed Democrats. The calls are coming from inside the house, bro!11/12/2021 5:23:37 PM |

^Same. Growing up in a Christian Republican family (but not a Southern Baptist, Bible thumping far-right family) I was in favor of fiscal conservatism, but did not give two shits about gay marriage, abortion, weed, etc so I often voted third party and occasionally even a Democrat or two. But the way the Republican party fell all over themselves to fellate the Don and excuse anything he did made me sick. And when so many were able to completely write off criticisms of Trump as "Fake News" even though they gave Clinton such shit for the Monica Lewinsky affair and Democrats for the cult of personality around Bill and Hillary, the hypocrisy was just too much and I was done. After Trump was elected I began actively voting Democrat as an FU to them. They hyper partisanship on their part is sickening. Unless they completely repudiate Trumpism and the far-right like MTG and Madison Cawthorn, I will no longer support them. 11/22/2021 8:30:51 AM |

For as long as I can remember, I've always downloaded a sample ballot prior to each election, then looked up each candidate's campaign website and examined their stated issues and sometimes their bios if I wasn't sold on any given candidate's issues alone.
I usually ended up picking a Democrat, but I tried my best to be as bipartisan as possible and would possibly elect a couple of Republicans for various positions.
However, in 2010, based on the candidates' stated positions, I didn't vote for a single Republican, because every Republican candidate seemed to have absurd positions. I may have left some of the entries blank, if I wasn't happy with the Democratic candidate either, but I didn't cast a single Republican vote that election.
I recall feeling fairly guilty afterwards for having voted in such a partisan fashion.
Then, the new General Assembly took office, flooded with Republicans who had been recently elected, and they began passing absurd legislation.
It didn't take long for me to feel completely vindicated for not having voted for a single one of them.
In 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, I may have continued to review Republican candidates' stated issues, but I had no regrets if I didn't vote for any of them.
In 2020, I didn't review any Republican candidates' websites - I only reviewed the campaign sites of Democrats and Libertarians - because I refused to vote for any candidate that would appear on the same ballot with the same party affiliation as Donald Trump.
I'll likely review their campaign websites again in 2022, but it's unlikely that I'll vote for any of them anytime soon. 11/22/2021 11:24:22 AM |

Both of your experiences are pretty similar to mine. I would vote R and D based more on issues than what team they were on, mainly because in my area of Eastern NC there were no Republican candidates in local elections. Then when the Republicans took over the state Legislature and started supporting bullshit like HB2, I was thoroughly disgusted and decided to not support them at least at the state level. Like Grumpy said, once the party was fully MAGA'd I was done and will be until they have completely turned from Trumpism. 11/23/2021 6:55:29 AM |

That's pretty much me. I used to vote for largely a mix of (R) and (L)...trending more towards the latter than the former as the GOP got worse and worse over time. Every once in a while, I'd vote for a (D), but it was rare. That, and I'd leave races blank.
The last 2 (maybe 3?) elections, I've voted mostly for a mix of (D) and (L), with some left blank. I don't think I voted for a single (R) in 2020. I won't vote for an (R) who isn't clearly against Trump and Trumpism. I suppose it theoretically doesn't have to be explicit, but it has to be clear. That narrows it down to practically zero candidates, other than a tiny handful of them who aren't running in any race I can vote in.
My political views have changed fairly minimally over the last, say 15 years...and not really all that much over the last 20-25. The parties have both shifted for the worse, but the GOP has become illiberal, undemocratic, incompetent to run the country, and detached from reality, logic, and facts. The Dems are merely anathema--sometimes that leaves them as tolerable given the other choices.

I wasn't in that courtroom--same as everyone else here--but I am pretty comfortable with the Rittenhouse verdict. At the absolute best, he's no hero--and I think it's probably accurate to say that he made some seriously poor decisions--but I don't think he is a murderer, and I think the narrative on that story got skewed in the media portrayal. Also, I think he was way overcharged. He probably should have been convicted on a weapons charge or two in light of the straw purchase of the rifle, and maybe the possession of it (not sure on the law there).
I don't think there's anything to celebrate anywhere in that entire situation other than, I think, the correct verdict being reached on the homicide charges.12/6/2021 11:05:29 PM |

The party is lost. It's clear that noone is going to hold any of these people accountable in a meaningful way. This country won't survive Trumpism intact. It's got blueballs for violence and it won't rest until it finally gets the pointless internal fight that will totally wreck our economy and finish burning what's left of the social contract.
There will probably be an effort towards the rise of American city-states, where blue urban areas will try to further distance themselves from their parent red states by attempting to make a more micro version of "state's rights" as the only possible reaction to the state GOPs that will permanently gerrymander themselves into power.
I started this post in hyperbole, but by the time i got to the end, I think I resigned myself to actually believing that this is what will actually happen.12/7/2021 3:35:24 PM |
