Just so we’re cool with also acknowledging that he’s got the 2nd most conference wins in State history and 2nd most overall wins in State history.

All these stats are very flawed when comparing across eras since the schedule and conference is wildly different than it was 50 years ago. But since you brought up one side of the argument, it’s only fair to mention the other side.

Probably easy to rack up the most wins/losses stats when you've coached at least four more seasons than the overwhelming majority of all your competitors.

The striking thing is how far you have to go back to hit a coach that had a winning conference record.

DD could conceivably do that if given a few more years... provided we field an actual offense during those years.

Dave's seat won't even be a little warm this year due to the loss of Leary. I think it warms up considerably next year if we don't win at least 9 games. It's clear that he has peaked. My biggest gripe is that he can't put together a complete team in all facets, as demonstrated by our strong defense but weak wide receivers this year. In the past we have had a strong running game, but a crappy secondary. It always presents itself in some form. Maybe it's a coordinator problem.
We are a fringe top 25 program, and can't seem to lure an elite coach here, but I'd be okay with firing Dave and trying someone else.

What you’re describing is an issue at all but like 10 programs in America. Having no obvious weaknesses across every position means you’re probably a top 10 team in the country.

We will absolutely never lure an elite, proven coach here unless something drastically changes. Being a fringe top 25 program is good at State.

I’m not saying that we should never strive for better. But we don’t have a history of winning titles here. We don’t have a history of being nationally relevant. This isn’t the same as basketball where we can at least point to our (increasingly ancient) history. I’m not trying to be defeatist. And I’m not blindly supporting Doeren either. I just think a realistic assessment of what’s possible for State football is needed. Not winning a conference title in 40+ years is really shitty. There’s some bad coaching, bad personnel, and bad luck to be blamed there.

I think a lot of that will depend on what the roster looks like. We will lose a lot. But have the chance to add a lot in the portal too. Some fans will want him fired if we go 10-2. I think whether or not he’s truly on the hot seat won’t come down to simply his record next year but other factors like fan support, how the team fills needs in the transfer portal, and how recruiting is trending.

I agree with most of it, until he gets to blaming conservative Dave for the loss in the mayonnaise bowl. That game was lost the second it was determined Morris wasn't going to play. It didn't matter what in-game decisions Doeren made after that, we weren't going to win with a bad QB to compound the other issues we had (RB depth, missing OL, etc)

The only time he hasn't looked like absolute dogshit in a game was this year against UNC and its historically bad defense. And he didn't look particularly good then, just not terrible - still made a bunch of terrible throws, just didn't have a halfway decent defense to take advantage.
