Liz Cheney is def a garbage person, the difference is she still thinks that whoever wins the electoral college (barring legitimate legal challenges) should be president and that the transfer of power after elections should be orderly. That’s a bar so low it’s in the sewer, but that’s still a bar she clears while 99% of the GOP doesn’t. It’s objectively better for the country if she serves as WY’s rep vs this new MAGA shithead based on this single issue alone. 8/18/2022 6:35:45 PM |

So Duke, you keep saying DeSantis dancing around the big lie isn't a deal breaker, but he's actively supporting candidates who are saying Trump won the election.
How is that not the same? 8/19/2022 1:25:03 PM |

^^ How in the hell is the position she has put herself into opportunistic?
^ I mean, it's bad...I'm not a DeSantis fan. I think that maybe the "real" DeSantis, if he didn't have to perform for the GOP voters, might be someone I could get behind, but we'll never know because he'll always have to play the part.
I think it's self-evident how it's not quite the same, though.
When I say it's not a dealbreaker, I mean that I can see at least some possibility of me voting for DeSantis if the Dems ran someone sufficiently left. If he gets into outright conspiracy theory denialist and/or total authoritarian looking to subvert the elections process territory, that's a hard stop--I wouldn't vote for that no matter who the Dems run.
On that note, btw, if Trump gets the GOP nomination, I can't imagine abstaining. I think I'd have to vote for any candidate the Dems put forth, no matter how disgusting and/or batshit.
As another aside, my registration goes back and forth between (D) and (R), depending on which primary I want to vote in. The last 2-3 elections, though, I have voted for more (D)s than (R)s in the general...and I'm pretty sure I didn't vote for a single (R) for anything in 2020. 8/20/2022 12:14:09 AM |

That's just so weird to me that your line is just explicit support of the big lie but implicit support is totally fine. He is actively throwing support behind big lie candidates and clearly doesn't have an issue with that position. 8/20/2022 8:59:49 AM |

Where did I say that it was “totally fine”, that I didn’t “have an issue with” it, or that I was “good with it?”
By that logic, what conclusions would you leap to if I voted for Liz Warren in the event she was the nominee against Trump in the general election?

You're essentially saying that you could see yourself voting for DeSantis because even though he's supporting the big lie through his actions, he isn't officially saying it, are you not?
He also is subverting the fair election process, I mean he rejected the GOP suggested maps because they weren't gerrymandered enough. Not to mention his entire election security force crap. However that doesn't appear to be authoritarian enough for you. 8/21/2022 7:47:47 AM |

I’ll never forget the Right screaming “SHAKEDOWN” when the Obama EPA enforced the clean water act on BP after the Deepwater Horizon spill. So to watch the absolute glee the Right had on their faces when DeSantis started threatening one of the largest businesses in the state? Quite simply, my incredulity is prompted by any equivocal views about what is going on in the GOP right now, certainly including DeSantis. I was raised by conservative Republican parents and voted for the Republican ticket in every presidential election through 2012 for which I met the voting age requirement. I'm not particularly embarrassed by that, although I'd probably take a do-over. However, the current Republican Party is clearly subverting democracy and institutions, and I am not OK with trying to skirt the issues and hoping for political survival and short attention spans. Any politician who goes along with this crap is dead to me. Admittedly, my protest votes in SC are pretty much a throw-away, but I anticipate an eventual move back to NC where they have at least a chance to matter again. It should not be acceptable to just be quiet or not vocally supportive about an active threat like what we are facing. You need to vocally oppose it. If you can't do that, you are a coward (not YOU -- the politicians). Climate denialism and general anti-science, ignorant policy positions also don't play well with me. The GOP lost me, and it would take a TON of changes and contrition on their part before I would consider voting for any Republican candidate at state or national level again. 8/21/2022 9:57:44 AM |

There is a small list of Republicans I would vote for over certain 'Dem' candidates, like Hogan over Tulsi, but it's extremely small.
The fact that you, and others like yourself, would entertain voting for DeSantis is sad. You're willing to happily go to the polls ignoring all the racist dog whistles, the increasing steps towards authoritarianism, and the blatant homophobia. Like sure, you may absolutely hate Warren, but how is encouraging the GOP to keep electing people like DeSantis any better? Go sit out instead, write Batman on your ballot, do something besides voting for DeSantis or his ilk. 8/21/2022 12:48:57 PM |

Quote : | "Ron DeSantis Has a New White House Strategy: Arrest People for Voting Fraud DeSantis announced the arrest of 20 allegedly ineligible voters. It's the latest example of the Florida governor punching down for political points. Cameron Joseph
Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis made a big show of announcing the arrests of 20 people accused of illegally voting in the 2020 election Thursday evening—and revealed what his new political scapegoat will be as he looks for a big reelection win in November and ramps up for a possible presidential run.
These are the first arrests made by DeSantis’ new Florida Office of Election Crimes and Security, created after the 2020 election. Florida allows former felons to vote, but the law is confusing—and those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense don’t qualify. DeSantis said all the arrested individuals fell into that category. They now face felony charges and could serve up to five years in prison.
The splashy press conference (not to mention the creation of the office in the first place) was classic DeSantis. He excels at punching down, finding convenient political targets, and “triggering the libs” in a way that will keep the fight in the news and the political donations coming. A prime example was his “Don’t Say Gay” law, which targeted trans kids and their supporters by banning any mention of gender identity or sexual orientation in young classrooms.
Now, DeSantis is scoring easy political points with a GOP base that’s paranoid about voter fraud as he looks to further build his national brand. And what could be an easier political target for DeSantis than murderers and those convicted of sexual assault?
DeSantis’ venue to announce the arrests was also a calculated choice: Democratic and heavily diverse Broward County, in South Florida. And he made clear more arrests will be coming. “This is just the opening salvo,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis and Republicans have repeatedly sought to undermine the will of the people since Floridians overwhelmingly backed a referendum to reinstate that right for former felons in 2018. The state Legislature also undercut the referendum by banning former felons who still owed fees to the state from voting.
Voting rights advocates worry these efforts could scare off former felons who are allowed to vote legitimately.
And even though DeSantis has called Florida’s election the “gold standard” in 2020, he and Republicans in the state moved to make it harder to vote in future elections. They’ve limited ballot drop boxes and targeted so-called “ballot harvesting” to make it a felony for anyone to possess more than two ballots, which voting rights advocates say undoes long-held efforts in Black churches to gather ballots from parishioners.
DeSantis announced the recent arrests less than a week before Florida’s primary election, which will determine whether he faces Democratic Rep. Charlie Crist or Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried this fall.
And his presidential aspirations couldn’t be clearer. DeSantis’ press conference was sandwiched between campaign events for statewide candidates in Arizona, Ohio, and Pennsylvania scheduled for this week—an obvious way for him to get national exposure as well as earn political favors from GOP candidates who might soon hold significant positions of power and influence in their states.
He also just so happens to be campaigning for four candidates who were endorsed by former President Donald Trump, giving him a foothold for potential endorsements in the future from hardline conservatives who owe something to his most likely 2024 primary rival.
Arizona GOP governor candidate Kari Lake said last weekend that DeSantis had “BDE” (big dick energy), which she joked stood for “Big DeSantis energy.”
“He’s got the same kind of BDE that President Trump has. And frankly, he has the same kind of BDE that we want all of our elected leaders to have,” she said.
His latest political stunt shows she might be right." |

What's DeSantis' upside?
Going after the cruise industry to prevent them from requiring proof of vaccination for covid. Not preordering vaccines for kids under 5. Fining the Special Olympics millions of dollars for having vaccine requirements. Yelling at a kid during a press conference to get him to take his mask off. Using the government to spitefully go after Disney.
He's a cartoon villain and a bully that's constantly stoking the fires of a growing culture war but that appears to be what conservatives want these days. 8/22/2022 1:09:27 PM |

Walker's verbal gaffes have raised concerns among Georgia and national Republicans about his race, which is a top priority for the GOP. One man was arrested by armed SWAT team at 6 a.m. He was in his underwear and was taken to jail that way Elections offices in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties said it's the state's responsibility to review registration applications and let the counties know when someone is ineligible.
“We were not notified by the state prior to 2022 that these individuals were ineligible,” People arrested were able to register, their registrations were reviewed by the state, and the fact that they were ineligible to vote was not relayed to at least 2 of the 5 counties where arrests happened
The government told most of these people they could vote, so they voted .@GovRonDeSantis office has not returned multiple requests seeking comment about this Court documents indicated that most of the people have arrested had little education, including a woman who told FDLE she could not really read or write.
Weeks after that interview, she was arrested like the others All the people on the list were convicted of big time crimes that made them ineligible to vote. That's without dispute
But each did the sentences they were given. Now they are back in the criminal justice system w/few resources b/c they voted after they were told they could vote" |

Seems like the DOJ could drop smoking gun evidence that Trump knowingly betrayed the country by leveraging state secrets at any moment
And…
The GOP is barely showing cracks in its support for Trump? Is the plan just to go down with the ship? I have a hard time believing that, these rats are survivors first and foremost. They seem to believe they can just accuse the FBI of maliciousness until all this fades from voters’ memories…….which is objectively insane.

Is it? Why hedge now?
What could possibly happen, smoking gun evidence or not, that would make a significant difference in Trump's and/or Trumpism's support from here? The full-tilt MAGAs don't deal in facts or reality to start with, and the rest will somehow contort and convince themselves that however bad it is, to still vote (R) because what the (D)s will do would be catastrophic and irrevocable (which is true, but still vastly less bad than what the MAGA-wing (R)s will do.)
I've said for years that there is NOTHING that Trump could say, do, or fail to do that would cause his supporters to turn on him. NOTHING. You've all said it too, but I really mean NOTHING. How many times do you need to see them excuse or deny something that is wildly beyond the pale?
I mean, if they throw that piece of human refuse in the butt-hut where he belongs, then that would be a game-changer, but that's the only scenario I can think of. They'd support him then, too, but he'd be locked away. Of course, what is there to hedge? That would solve the GOP's Trump problem in some ways, AND fire up the GOP base.

It's such a stupid argument and I wish people would stop believing it, but these are the same people that praise Reagan and naively think that trickle-down economics actually happens, and for whatever reason, they still have a love affair with the GWB despite him creating wasteful/ineffective agencies like the TSA and the invading innocent people's privacy with the Patriot Act. 9/1/2022 12:04:16 AM |
