that's not so bad then--$36000 or whatever gs05s start at wouldn't be enough to get me to move to norfolk

Yeah no joke dude, I sure as hell would not move to norfolk for that much a year. That's why I applied to this place to begin with cause they presented that salary info right at the application/interview. The guy told me up front I'd be eligible for the full performance of GS7, so I was like hell yeah let's put in the application, lol. I spent months researching this after I put in the application too, so for them to come back and offer it to me again is so so so so SO fucking awesome, I'm so happy right now.
Time to properly start looking for and applying to places to live down there.
[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 3:12 PM. Reason : Also, average entry pay for the Raleigh area for my folks is about $45k/yr, so this is a great offer] 5/5/2009 3:07:00 PM |

Hey, if any of you out there are looking for a job in the construction industry I just got a message from a recruiter on facebook. If you're a recent grad this would probably be for you. PM me and I'll reply with his contact info. Probably requires relo, but hey, I imagine most of you all would be super happy for a job right now just like me. <3

i got what essentially amounts to an offer this afternoon. this morning i had an interview with a different company that i ended up liking more and got a round 2 with them tomorrow for a technical evaluation which i am not expecting any problems with. from what the recruiter told me, this company is probably going to make a better offer too. so hopefully by friday i'll no longer be unemployed 5/6/2009 5:20:49 PM |

The key with the feds is to get in....and be mobile....I started as a GS 7 about 5 years ago...and I have moved three times for career advancement positions.
Hate to tell you this, but a GS 7 step 10 is the highest in that grade, meaning you only get cost of living adjustments, no steps....so if someone got hired as a GS 8 Step 1, they get the yearly steps (after 4 years it is every three years then I think the last 3 steps it is like every 5 years)..you are stuck at a 7 step 10. To get any grade above that is a promotion.
One of my coworkers got hired way back when as a GS 11 step 10...she thought it was great, but then relized she should of asked for a GS 12 Step 1 because in the long run you make more. She was stuck at that grade for years and that affects your retirement (she recently retired)

I'll be working in Portsmouth though. Rule I heard was stay on the same side of the water (for where you live and work) with respect to the tunnels. So right now I'm looking at the Churchland area, some of the neighborhoods northwest of airline blvd near the water, and the area of Chesapeake that's west of Portsmouth. I'll probably end up picking a somewhat boring family neighborhood to live in. 5/10/2009 5:50:02 PM |

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that for now my family (parents) are planning a recon trip down there for the three of us for the first week of June. That'll be when we scout out and apply for a place down there.
Outside of what I mentioned, are there any other spots I should look (or not look) on the portsmouth side of town? I was pretty sure, based on internerd forum research, that the areas near the shipyard were a dump, and if the property value in an area is 150k or less you're probably looking at a rougher neighborhood. Any merit to that, or any other advice? I'm trying not to live too far from work, as I would like to keep my stress to a minimum. 5/10/2009 7:15:24 PM |

Contract rates are dependent on the rate which the end client allows the contract company to bill. Some offer benefits, others do not. Benefits are considered extra (the contract company offers them) so they are usually separate from the pay rate.
I was a recruiter for 3 years before I was laid off. This is week 4 of unemployment. 5/14/2009 8:44:53 AM |

Since I have a "bank" of KSAs from applying for Fed jobs (and finally getting one)...I am throwing out applications for other Fed jobs...it is nice to be able to do that and be employed...if you get it great, but no loose if you dont. Some many Fed openings are preselected and they just go through the motions because of the law. 5/14/2009 9:06:52 PM |
